So basically Whelan is confirming this idea of a head coach working with the DOF. I get the impression that the DOF would probably get the greater amount of power and as such, none of the top managers are interested in the coach role. Now if we get Van Gaal as DOF and Martinez as head coach I'd actually be pretty happy. I think the English media would consider Martinez the traditional 'manager,' but Van Gaal would be doing a lot of the work behind the scenes. Basically FSG are looking for someone young, loyal and media friendly who has a similar footballing philosophy to Van Gaal. How many top managers would be willing to give up half of their responsiblities to work as a run-of-the-mill coach? The likes of Martinez and Rodgers might just be tempted.

What if Martinez rejects though? Do we scrap the whole DOF system and install Van Gaal or Villas Boas as manager? I can't see that happening....but what self respecting manager would work under this system if not someone like Martinez? I think we'd then be looking at the likes of Steve Clarke and other such 'coaches'.

In that case, I'd play Meireles, Lucas and Poulsen. Spearing would get absolutely marmalised by Yaya Toure. At least Poulsen can kick him.

Roy giving an interview on skysports if anyone needs cheering up.

At least its not that owl-faced c*nt.

I should have known. Karma at work. I nearly laughed my head off my shoulders when he got the In-Ger-Lund job. This charade is payback.

No need to be so negative everyone. When Hodgson was appointed, i had an awful gut feeling, it was going to be a disaster. I'm not getting that with Martinez at all.

Now i'm not going to pretend, to say i'm happy with Martinez coming in. There are certainly better options out there. But there is a lot of potential to him. He's very intelligent. He has a great knowledge on the technical side of the game. He's one of the new breed of modern managers out there.

I'm cautiously excited with anticipation.

Agree with this.  With Hodgson's you knew what we were getting.  With Martinez there is certainly risk but there also is hope.

In that scenario every crack in the ground grows into a continental rift. IMHO, that's as daft scenario as co-managers (re: Evans-Houllier).

There is always risk, but theres also a lot less risk involved were other managers are concerned.

If Whelan is wrong or exaggerating then I would expect FSG/Liverpool to leak something along the lines that they are in talks with Martinez but no offer has been made as yet (especially if they are also talking to others still).  If there is silence then I expect that Whelan is correct.

Delaying the inevitable. He has been the only one so far who reputable sources have said has attended an interview, was photographed with Henry, was one of the few managers to not turn us down and his current boss believes he has been offerred a role.

My guess is that FSG have outlined the role and Martinez is considering whether he's interested in principle, not that we've offered it to him. I still think we're talking to other candidates.

if say txiki or Aloysius Paulus Maria "Louis" van Gaal was hired too as a DOF would people be happier about martinez?

In this situation, I don't think it matters. Txiki would be a long term appointment, with Martinez being the one to axe as soon as things went the wrong way. van Gaal would probably be the same, but being a likely candidate to take over if Martinez is off.

I believe we need a strong manager in place. Someone to help us put the structure in place, to buy us some time.
