Why should it though? Serious question.

No one knows if he is good enough or not.

Sacking Kenny Dalglish and replacing him with Brendan Rodgers will not go down well. Whether it should or not, I don't know. I'd like us to stay away from any "mid-table" managers to be honest.

I like Villa Boas a lot but fear he would not be given support by our fans and it could turn ugly.

The guy has some great ideas.

You would hope that the majority of our support would catch itself on fairly quickly and realise the folly of not backing him.

well. tell me which of us din celebrate when rafa won the champs league with us, din celebrate during the course of 08/09 year when we almost got it!

It was a good season, good to challenge for the league again, especially when we destroyed manure at greyskull. Disappointed at the end but nothing compared to the horror afterwards as the tumours raped the club.

I like FSG they come across as intelligent people but if Rodgers or Martinez become our new manager that tells me they don't want to spend money

Good point. Shows a complete lack of ambition.

Far too soon for him. Same for Martinez.

If Rafa is not considered and interviewed then its an absolute disgrace. The man is a top 5 manager over the last 10 years, and can work miracles and bring in consistency if backed with a few coins and patience

Not from me. I've always been impressed with him. And hearing how he going to spend time with Spain to try and learn etc he's obviously a guy who wants to go to the very top.
Agreed - don't understand the negativity to Rodgers

He's British
His  "CV"  includes time at Barcelona and working under Mourinho
He likes possesion football- hates longball
His Swansea team just played us off the park in the last game

Gutted Kenny is gone - would love to see Rafa back but admit it is unlikely - someone like Rodgers might be what we get

Can someone bump the article about him from earlier in the thread?

Im not against him.Infact I've watched Swansea 20 times this season and I've enjoyed their football.I'd just want someone with experience at the topmost level, having tasted success and trophies..A step like this could be too much for Rodgers or Martinez. On the other hand Klopp or Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas would be high risk, but with great knowledge of European football and competition at the topmost level.A manager who was managing in the Championship last year?We could finish 7th next season and FSG would lose patience with him..Rodgers in a few years will become a great manager, but too soon now,for me.

Yeah the problemn with someone like Rodgers is he is only had one good season.

George Burley was the best thing since sliced bread in 2000 when Ipswich came 5th in the league after getting promoted.

Coppell was also similar when Reading came up and had a simialr season to Swansea, playing attractive football.

You have to prove it over many seasons, not one.

I'd be alot more comfortable with Martinez or Rogers if Clarke had stuck around.

He's worked wonders with our defence.

Just fell off my chair, he actually has the gall to be suggesting Rafa after firing him?  The epic c*nt.

Our club stature and the money we can offer in wages will attract the players we can get(none CL). People are putting way to much stock in a 'big name' automatically bringing big players.

If Rafa Benitez returned as manager of Liverpool I would be chuffed beyond belief! I don´t have a single bad memory of him, only the fondest memories. I don´t give a toss about how much he spent, the shit signings he made, all that doesn´t matter to me because, after all those years of winning sod all he made us believe again, he turned us into a force to reckoned with in Europe, a team to be feared, and for that I will be eternally grateful and hope beyond hope that he is reinstated. It would be a great day for Liverpool Football Club.

I agree. I fully expect our next manager to be a winner of some sort. These managers are available (capello, benitez, Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas) but there are others we could attempt to steal as well. Whilst there is a small chance the likes of Martinez, Rogers, Pardew etc could deliver for us I think the risk is too big. Add to the fact a sucessful manager will show ambition and will attract a better class of player.

This is a really short-sighted move IMO. I think Martinez might be a good manager one day, but it's a lot to expect that from him now.

Can someone who knows more tell me why, specifically, they're anti-Rodgers? As I said before I know next to fuck all about him. All I know is he's currently Swansea manager, has them playing some decent stuff, and kept them up this season. So yeah.
For me ater the results we've had, I'd like someone with a proven record of managing a big club and big expectaitions. I guess I see a Hodgson Mk 2, that's probably incredibly unfair, but last season Owen Coyle was being mentioned, I'd prefer someone with more of a track record.

But, if FSG consider a champions league place to be the minimum they expect, why would they take on martinez or Rodgers? Surely they would be looking at a champions league proven manager?

For what it's worth, I think it would be a mistake to bring Rafa back to the club. He had five years to build a team good enough to challenge for the league title, but in the end they weren't even good enough for the top four. I also think his philosophy of the game is flawed; he never focused on playing a free-flowing, expansive, attacking game and instead took a cautious approach that frustrated many of us.

At the end of his last season he said we needed to sign up to five new players; that really says a lot about the squad he built. I'm thankful for the trophies he helped us to win and some of the fantastic European nights we enjoyed under Benitez, but I honestly believe bringing him back to the club would be a step in the wrong direction.
