Doubt we will be able to get a whole lot of money for him, and doubt we'll be able to replace him for that amount.

It'd be the £4m a year we pay him that would go towards a replacement, you can get a very good player for that.
When your Mum used to pick you up from school and you'd run out and be like 'Mummy I got 9/10 in the spelling test today', would she go 'phenomenal, son'.

Cos if she did she's a stupid fuck.

Me thinks mr. Barrett might be peddling agenda rather than insight :P

Don't think he's Kenny's poodle. But he certainly phrased it carefully, I'll give you that.

I just hope he enjoys success wherever he goes. absolute legend, if there's a positive it will be a chance to free up the wages.

He could leave and then change his name to Dick Crust.  We will then buy him back because he sounds British.  He will score more than Adam and Downing.  Too bad the price tag will be inflated as well.

When you see the sort of players the top squads regularly leave on the bench, I wonder why we HAVE to sell him or Maxi.

If it is a case of he wants to go, then so be it, but I'd rather have him in the squad showing the younger players a thing or two about dedication and commitment.

I hate to be writing this but there's a major difference being on the bench in 1st or 2nd place and contributing a bit towards a title vs. contributing a bit towards 8th place.

If his form drops off that badly because he doesn't play 90 of every game then it's goodbye. His game time is only going to decrease from here on in if he stays.

Not sure why we can't replace him for the money...Newcastle are sitting pretty with Ba and Cisse for a combined £9M.

I think every football fan on the planet has got to try their best not to start comparing transfers to Cisse and Ba. Those moves (and the players' resulting fantastic seasons) were rather freakish results of a confluence of factors (including, of course, fantastic scouting and negotiation by Newcastle), and while they do certainly indicate that such things are possible, the novelty of it should tell you how unlikely it is to happen again. I'm also convinced that we (or any other "rich" team) could never have made those deals for such little money.

I'd be shocked, like others here, if we got more than 2 or 3 million for Dirk. The only way we replace him for that little is if it goes to Blackburn for compensation for Hoilett. And even then, nobody can really replace Dirk.
You know what, I'm writing this here now and I'm going to put it in my signature and leave it there for the next 5 years, no matter how embarrassing it might or might not turn out to be: Jordan Henderson is going to be a fantastic player.

Dirk's been a great servant to the club and one I love. I'm not sure I'd call him a legend, though; I'd like to think to be considered a legend at this great club you'd be a part of a side that wins more than one League Cup during your tenure.

The cold hard fact of this window is we can better utilize his 80k a week, so it's probably best for both parties if he moves on. When you're constantly challenging for things you can afford to have a squad player on those types of wages, but when you're battling to simply be in contention for fourth and revamping your squad then you need to be a little wiser and more efficient with your wages.

well said.  Though maybe not a legend, he has worn the shirt and represented the club with nothing but honor.  As a person and player, he never reflected poorly for the club.  IF he goes, I will wish him well and hope we run into him in a European competition down the road.

Well not quite.....simply because you have to pay his replacement a salary, unless this 'very good player' was performing for free :-)

Yes and no... Cisse/Ba are not the only examples. They're just extreme examples. Everton for example have bought in Jelavic and hes done fantastically well. We ourselves in the past have picked up a few really solid bargains. Mascherano loan deal was a stroke of genius, Alonso given his calibre was a bargain, Skrtel, Agger.. all good solid purchases for cheap prices. Look at ALL of Newcastle's signings since they have got promoted and they are good cheap/solid buys.

Addressing Kuyt, I think keeping him is a really good option. If we want to ditch experience and just go for a young team, I'm all for it but fans should understand we will become the next Arsenal (which is not neccesarily a bad thing)...

ha, Kuyt has managed to convince himself that it was just the manager now, nothing to do with his own woeful performances when given a chance, and general all round deterioration, he looked tired any time i seen him this season too, and fucking lazy to be honest. And lazy Kuyt is less than useless.

Hope no one at the club is daft enough to go offering him an extension.

Has looked tired this season and well below his standards but to call him lazy isnt right IMO , to get the best from Kuyt he has to be played as a striker or as close to the front man as possible (support striker , inside forward left or right) but never as a winger.

The strange truth is for me, I keep thinking we shouldn't really be worried about selling Kuyt or even Maxi. Well, ideally....

Because in an ideal world, they're both players that are replaceable. I'm not saying at all that either are bad players, they both have important and different qualities that they've brought to our team. But in any normal world where we trusted our manager/DOF/scouts/whoever, you'd expect our management to be able to find exciting players at least as good as the above two....somewhere in the world.  They could both do a job and fulfill a role if they stayed, but it's a case of needing to find another Kuyt or Maxi...not to somehow find another Alonso, Torres or Reina.  Their importance to our team and their replaceability is in the regard is overstated.

It's like Manchester United fans fretting about getting rid of Park Ji-Sung or Chelsea fans worrying about their ability to find a suitable replacement for Florent Malouda.  Perhaps it's wishful thinking from me, that we lived in a world where we could be thinking excitedly about the players we were getting in to replace them, instead of thinking with ominous dread about who their replacements might be.

Yes, I know we don't live in an ideal world. Hence the shouldn't, I know it's not the reality.
I'm really hoping Sturridge busts out the wacky dip when he scores.

Splitting haris a bit finely there. He played loads under Rafa as a "winger", and was good and bad. Which is Kuyt in a nutshell, often good and often bad, doesn't matter where he plays.

A new manager will come in and go "wow we also have dirk, scorer of important goals and dutch international. automatic first team choice"

and then a season will pass and he will be sold. I thought when rafa went that we would finally see the back of dirk, every cloud and all that. hodgson relied on him as a second right sided defender, and kenny saw straight through his inability to trap a football pretty quickly.

looks like we are lumbered with him for another season.

That's because his success isn't determined by his own ability. He runs and runs at 100% for 90 minutes. His success is determined by the opponent he is up against and whether they will have their brains on for the 90. If not, Kuyt can fashion an opening or chance, like the goal against Man Utd, when Evra ludicrously left him to run through on goal.

Fantastic servant, times up, get rid.

I don't see it that way. I think it's just honest. Kenny didn't see him as a first choice and so he wanted to leave, because he wants to play football, which is no crime at his age.
With a different man in charge, his chances may well increase.

As it turns out. No other news agency picked that up. Figure that!

If you look in the Dirk Kuyt thread on the main forum you'll actually find the original source was a dutch newspapers website. Figure that!

http://www.ad.nl/ad/nl/1052/Premier-League/article/detail/3257323/2012/05/18/Kuyt-Afwachten-wie-coach-wordt-bij-Liverpool.dhtml

and in The Times in an article by Tony Barrett.

Against the ongoing backdrop of uncertainty, several Liverpool players are seeking assurances about what the future holds. Chief among them is Dirk Kuyt, who is ready to reconsider his decision to leave the club this summer if a manager is appointed who is willing to offer him regular playing time.

The Holland forward became frustrated over his role in the Liverpool team and was ready to consider offers from clubs on the Continent when the transfer window opens on July 1. The departure of Dalglish, however, has encouraged Kuyt to await the arrival of a new manager before going ahead with his plans to leave.

“I hope I can stay with Liverpool,” Kuyt said. “With Dalglish as manager, I didn’t have the impression he would let me start from the beginning next season. We have to wait and see now. I’m not sure yet what Liverpool will do with this manager vacancy.”
