One of the best DMs in La Liga, one for the future certainly. Played in some friendlies as well for the Spanish NT.

Is he a true DM Masch style? From what I just seen he looks more like a attack from deep style player, maybe Alonso-esque but with a bit more dribbling.

Sigurdsson, Beñat, Jovetic, and a young striker. Sorted.

Oddly, swap Beñat for Clasie and that's pretty much what I proposed a few days ago as well.

I guess great minds think alike.  Jovetic in particular is a player I hope we pursue - about as good a player as we have a realistic chance at this summer.

Agreed. Really tidy player.

I've heard of him but if it's not a Barca or Madrid game, I rarely watch La Liga.  I don't seem to remember him from the Betis-Barca game last season, though it's entirely possible I just missed him.

What's he like?  Reports online tend to mention he's tidy on the ball, and little else.  Presumably we could afford him, and at age 25 if he doesn't turn out to be brilliant there's a lot of resale value.  Transfermarkt has his value at less than 3 million, but he got a game for Spain recently so he must be worth more than that, no?  Would he be looked at as a Lucas backup, or potentially to play alongside him?

Yes, certainly tidy on the ball. He's a DM, but he's got a bit more to his game going forward than say Masch and he also chips in with a few goals from deep. Comes from Betis by way of Bilbao, so he'll have plenty of schooling in the type of football Rodgers likes to play. He'd be a natural deputy for Lucas, but I think he could also function alongside him to some effect. He'll certainly go for more than 3m as he's one of Betis' brightest lights, but considering their financial situation I think if we offered them something close to 10m they'd probably bite our hands off. I think he was linked to Juve towards the beginning of the season, so there might be some competition for his signature, but for me he'd be a step up from some of the names I've seen touted for the DM position this summer.

Think we'd still need another winger/wide forward in addition to those four.

Sigurdsson, Diame.
Striker to help/back to Carroll.
Left back.

Leftfield suggestion for a striker, Miroslav Klose?

This isn't the first time I've seen this theory, and it honestly baffles me.  Lucas has consistently proven to be an excellent defensive midfielder, very adept at doing what the DM is supposed to in Rodgers' system.  He could be a bit taller, a la Javi Martinez, if we're going to implement the 3-5-2 on the ball, but otherwise he is very well suited for that role.

The 2 AMs are supposed to play differently, crossing the ball when there's an opening on the other side, making penetrating runs into the box, and also occasionally popping up with a long-range shot.  It's not that Lucas is terrible at that, but he's certainly much better at the duties of the DM in this scenario.  Why on earth would we move him forward?
Yeah, I guess we just disagree.  I don't see Alonso as the ideal DM in BR's new system.  He was using Britton here at Swansea, who's like a poor man's Lucas, basically.  Very high pass percentage, a lot of short passing, cycling the ball back and forth to find where the opposition are unbalanced or out of position.  Sure, he's going to pop off a long ball every now and again, but it's much more about being able to play the ball out of trouble under pressure and quick, one-touch passing for a Rodgers DM.  All of which describes Lucas perfectly.  His role will be to keep the ball moving and to provide the platform for the two midfielders ahead of him (Gerrard and Sigurdsson, possibly?) to pass and move into space.
I'm with you on this. Fully agree.

I just wanted to add that for his height, Lucas is very good at winning midfield aerial challenges. He can't aim his headers for shit when trying to score but from his very first season at Liverpool, I've always been impressed with how many headers he wins in midfield.

I'd have De Jong, but an older head as it were as well.
Klose has been there seen it and done it.

Sigurdsson, Diame, De Jong and Klose would be a happy window for me.

Obviously Klose could be swapped for another, but you get my idea.

I honestly debated not even putting in the thing about height, but I was trying to list disadvantages to playing Lucas in that position in a Rodgers setup.

Honestly I think height is overrated as a factor in winning headers, particularly in midfield.  It's much more about positioning, and Lucas is brilliant at it.  I'd guess that his percentage of headed challenges won is as good or better than Fellaini or someone like that.  It's just that this country has sort of a mental block when it comes to a shorter player at centre back and so somewhere in the back of my mind is this idea that if he's to drop back into the centre of a 3-5-2, he needs a couple of inches.  Giving it some consideration, I think that's totally wrong.

I read an article around the time of his move and he was quoted as saying he'd have stayed at Newcastle for 50k a week, and he'd apparently doubled the 30k he was on.

Yeah definitely. Have someone for Carroll and whoever else to learn from, but it'd be risky to go into the season with Carroll as first pick striker and the only other similar option being an ageing veteran who could easily be unreliable fitness-wise

This is basically it, but people seem to be convinced he is a world beater based on the fact he has come out of Barcas youth academy.

He looks more like McNulty from The Wire
"My coach told me to warm up just before the break. He told me I was going to take care of Kaka. I didn't think it was possible to turn things around but in the dressing room at halftime Rafa Benitez was calm - "We are Liverpool FC, we have so many fans, we are not going to be slaughtered. If we can score a goal quickly we push on from there.""

I think a bad season can be allowed, especially if it's your first at a new club (providing the efforts there). I remeber Benzema having a similar first season at Madrid and I could probably think of plenty of other examples... If I could be arsed.
