The return of Cole....
« on: May 11, 2012, 05:36:53 pm »
Do you think Joe Cole will ever grace the fields of Anfield Road again? He has had quite a good season - and surely he is better than some who are currently at Anfield.

I doubt it, personally.  Think he is the exact type of player FSG want to get rid of - relatively old, over paid and under performing.

I do feel a little sorry for Cole though.  He came and had a brilliant debut in pre season.  When the season started he got sent off, then he had some injuries and most importantly he was played under Hodgson.  Often he was wide right or left and we were so deep and cautious as a team he was picking the ball up on the half way line or in our own half.  To get the best out of Cole he has to be getting the ball in the final third, where he can be a threat and a match winner.  He never really got a chance under Dalglish given Maxi, Meireles, Kuyt and Suarez were playing so well as an attacking four.

He seems a good lad, he was unlucky here, but I don't see him as the future, would rather see Suso get a chance over Cole.

I don't see how we get him out permanently! Guess cross our fingers QPR stay up they seem to be handing out huge wages on average players.

He will probably go on loan again to a club that will pay a percentage of his wages.

Only way to reduce the cost on him.

Fucking hell, I thought there was a gas and leccy shortage then. Power cuts in the 70's were boss.

Anyway, just cannot see him coming back here other than to complete formalities on a move elsewhere. His wages would be enough to pay at least two very good younger players' wages.

I doubt it. He will most likely go out on loan for every remaining year of his contract with us stumping up a % of his wages.

Noone is going to buy him and he isn't going to leave of a free and walk away from his pension. Just another transfer fuckup to add to the others over the last few years.

If Maxi is off then why not, we are paying most of his wages anyway apparently, can't see it happening though

First prize to you sir for being the first to mention wages. 6 posts must be some kind of record for a Joe Cole thread a reckon.

He could play the role of Maxi in the squad: player who likes to play more centrally and link up than necessarily stay wide and cross.

If we lose maxi, kuyt and maybe even downing, then he may be that elder fellow we need how is of use, and won't stunt the growth of the talented kids coming through. I'd prefer we got some more quality tho, but he is an option

with Maxi and potentially Kuyt leaving, it does leave us dangerously short of "wide" men.

If we could get Cole on lower terms i'd like to see us keep him as a back up option. Never first choice though even if he's been decent at Lille

I say we pay him off (a lump sum of ~ £3m/4m) and invite other teams to sign him for free. We would save about £10m on wages that way.

How? He signed a 4 year contract in 2010 on £90k per week. He's got 2 years left so the remainder of his wages would be 9,360,000 exactly. paying him for 3-4 million would be totally counter productive.

I thought he had signed a 5 year contract in 2010? My bad.

Then just change it to a £2m payoff then.

Like Aquilani, I think we all hope he will suddenly become the player that we all hoped he might be.

However, I think we all know thats not going to happen and he will probably be farmed out again or perhaps someone like QPR will pay a fee for him.

But if, and it's a big if, Kenny thinks he's good enough, is it not best to have him in our squad rather than off on loan somewhere whilst we pay a large percentage of his wages? 'Cos no one's going to buy him.

Pay him up 3 or 4 million. It'll save us about 6 million. You'll end up paying him more in subsidised loans.

If his best position is in the hole playing off a striker then there's Gerrard, Suarez, Shelvey I'd rather see there before him.

Some would take him over Downing out wide but at least Downing has pace, doesn't need 5 minutes on the ball every time he takes a touch and can last 90 minutes.

Could see him returning if both Maxi and Kuyt leaves and we sign no more than one attacking minded players. More likely he'll end up at West Ham if they get promoted.

Lille might buy him, they will have Champs league football next season.

Cole said recently he wants to stay there and would happily take a hit on his wages.
