Looking forward to seeing the likes of Henderson, Carroll and how they stand up to the noticeably 'other' atmospheres of deep Eastern Europe of unfamiliar Portuguese crowds in stadiums made half out of mountain (Braga, I think).
Think it could be a good competition for Charlie Adam, who will have to work to find a place in the team, and with a little bit of experience, could give us a nice balance when resting some of the big boys.
I hope for the life of me we don't piss away our league form with it though. These are young athletic men, if we can only uphold a respectable level of performance in 1/4 games because they are tired then something is seriously wrong. I agree when Rafa said take one game at a time, but equally I think squad management always has to have an eye on the long-term, finding the balance between rest and team blend. Obviously throwing 11 players who have never played together will not work. We have to be canny. Say, we play QPR at home on the weekend after a trip to Turkey to play Fenerbahce. Think, will I'll have some experience out in Turkey (Downing, Adam) and maybe replace them with a young Shelvey or Sterling on the weekend as they will be hungry and therefore dispel and notion of a European hangover in the week. It's simple planning and management, something we have not done very well at all this season.
