Send him back to mid-table mediocrity land. It is understandable if he simply lacks the skill to excel here. But no, he does have the skill. The lack of conviction, bottle and guile in his play is simply criminal. I've never seen a bigger coward in a Liverpool jersey. Riera was ten times the winger that Downing is on his day. The ease with which he coasts through games when we need him the most is what hurts me the most. You have Carroll on the one hand, who was literally putting his body on the line every time the ball was crossed into the box and on the other hand, you had Downing who was tip-toeing past 50/50 tackles.

He makes Robbie Keane's signing look like a masterstroke. Randy Lerner must've laughed all the way to the bank after we got ripped off on this guy.

He is in midtable mediocrity land  :-[

Based on his one season, I can only really conclude he has been our worst signing for the left winger role in recent times. The likes of Riera, Maxi,Kuyt, Babel, Benayoun have all been much better and cheaper. That is really disappointing. You are supposed to learn from your mistakes but not make bigger mistakes. Seems like with Downing, we just made a bigger mistake.

should have been subbed off and Maxi or even Shelvey should have came on. He was left in there while tired Bellamy went off to cross the ball into Carroll, yet he delivered nothing, Johnson and Enrique delivered much better. Only thing he did was block the pass into Carrolls path(Was it downing)

We might be able to get 7mil on him and pay off some of his wages. Spend the money on some quality youngsters instead.

Agree, at this moment, we are mid-table club. Albeit a very rich one with huge transfer budget. Shame really on this season, could and actually should have been much better.

I can't believe Kenny left him on after the 1st half performance he put in. I can't believe Kenny kept him on instead of Bellamy.

I thought it was the right signing given the level we were shopping at (not being able to match the high wages, no CL football etc.) but my god he's been beyond a let down.

He's a coward, has (some) talent but no balls whatsoever. don't know if you can change a players mentality at his age so would prefer us to cut our losses

but no other club will be daft enough to buy him so he will stick around. lucky us.

Yet again, we see spits and spats of what he can do, unfortunately he has no interest in doing it on a regular basis.

I'd get rid of him for a nominal fee, in the summer.

It annoys me when posters claim a player 'bottled it' - often when they say that he just underperformed. But I suspect this applies to Stewart Downing today.

He just never tries anything different. The full back always has his number, as you only have to watch Downing for 5 minutes to completely suss his game. He's frustrating on the complete opposite end of the spectrum to the likes of Babel and Garcia.

Don't agree with you mate that Enrique crossed better. The lad's crosses were woeful and just about every ball Enrique played on the floor went to a Chelsea player.

And, yes, it was Downing's block that went to Carroll for the goal. Does that count as an assist?

An average player playing for an mid-table club sadly. There really cannot be any arguments with that.

The only arguments which could be is the price and how he would not fit for any team which aspires to be a top side.

Does the club have a sports psychologist? It's a serious question because it's pretty clear that Downing's mentality is so low. I feel bad for him in that way...it must be hard to be in his business--football--when it's pretty clear he lacks faith in his own abilities. But despite feeling sorry for him, I think he needs to be one of the first names on the transfer list. Why he has been played so much is a question I would love to know the answer to. Because he hasn't repaid his opportunities to play with a worthy performance.

I thought Downing got past his man and whipped in crosses pretty well once Carroll came on.

However, he has this habit of passing to Enrique as soon as he's around the outside on the wing. The problem is, he passes it straight to Enriques feet, so they both just end up standing there, blocked off by two defenders. He needs to use Enriques run to get past players, or pass forward to Enrique when he'll get past a man so Enrique can cross it.

The worrying thing from today was his lunchtime interview when he began talking about next season! If Kenny stays and he keeps this joker, then he will have to perform miracles to justify paying his wages.

Shockingly poor performance but one we've been accustomed to throughout the season. In Kenny's eyes that performance will have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Should cut our losses in the summer, a championship winger with far less ability would have shown more desire and determination out there than Downing who while has some ability, has a rubbish mentality. Hides when the going gets tough.
