First up, an apology to fellow Lancastrians. Last year, for the first time, I decided to start up a County Championship thread and lo and behold, Lancs only went and won their first title for donkeys years. I was away when the new season started so didn’t get round to starting a new thread and as a result Lancs were duly hammered by Sussex in their opening game.

Division one looks strong this year with the promotion of both London counties Surrey and Middlesex last year. Will Lancs struggle to repeat their heroics of last season? In all likelihood yes. They have signed Ashwell Prince as there overseas player which may bolster the always potentially fragile batting line up although it didn’t do much good against Sussex. At some point in the summer I think Old Trafford will become available again for 4 day games. Will we see an increase in rain affected games as a result?

So belatedly, here we go then. A thread for all Domestic County cricket for 2012, be it County Championship, Twenty20 or any other unsatisfactory one day competition. Enjoy!

Awesome response so far :D

Lancs have started this season fairly abjectly – two home defeats against Sussex and Warks. In the 2nd game we looked on top until a ridiculous stand of about 250 odd for the 8th or 9th wicket. Batting is still the main problem.

That said, a new round of matches has started today and Lancs are back at Taunton where they won the title last summer, and are currently in decent shape at 247-3.

Would be nice to get the odd reply throughout the summer in here!

New round of fixtures today, Lancs in action at Old Trafford against Notts. Notts currently 111-6. 4 wickets for Chapple. Jimmy, Swann and Broad all in action in this game.

And also, needed to post this: Kent all-rounder Fabian Cowdrey has made history by becoming the third generation of his family to represent the county. Cowdrey, 19, follows grandfather Colin and father Chris, who both captained Kent, in playing a first-team match.

Fabian? Fabian?! Have a look at this chump:

Ajmal Shahzad being released by Yorkshire's a bit odd.

Think there's been a bit of trouble brewing there for a while - personality clashes, arguments over money, and then throw in some good old fashioned Yorkshire 'diplomacy' and mismanagement and it seems all parties have decided it's best he goes. Bewildering, and given our past in hardly throwing down the welcome mat for local Asian lads, slightly disturbing.

Ah, I see. I guessed there must have been more to it than Yorkshire simply deciding that he suddenly wasn't much cop.

Somerset appear to be the first county to express an interest in him.

I was just reading about that on Cricinfo. It does seem a bit odd, I can't say I've seen a huge amount of him but he always seemd promising from what I have seen. Bit of an ego to match? Or just a personality clash with a few gruff professional Yorkshiremen on the board?

Another Lancy batting masterclass today. Went from 131/4 to 146 all out, Andre Adams with 7 for 32.

Going to get relegated if they don't sort the batting out.

Me neither, it's a bit too overstated now. It feels like change for change's sake. A shame.

By the way, Ajmal Shahzad's moved to Lancashire.

Interesting one - could be a good siging (although it's the batting not the bowling that needs to improve).

I know David Byas joined for a year at the end of his career - has anyone else played for both Counties?

The be fair, we've become something of a machine in the last season and a half.  Rose Bowl on the last day aside, we crushed two teams by an innings before that and have won every game but a rain effected game this season.  Varun Chropa is getting the kind of runs that if his name were lets's say Bavi Ropara, would be clamouring for an England spot and Keith Barker has been in amazing form.  Chris Wright was also a great find and has come on leaps and bounds.

Didn't realise a thread had been started, was thinking of starting one myself.

To say it's not been a great start to the season for Lancs would be something of an understatement.
3 losses, 2 draws, 0 wins.
And barring a minor miracle it's likely to become 4 losses very shortly.

It's looking a certainty at the moment. Just conceded a first innings lead of over 350 to Warwickshire so looking at nother defeat here and there's already a bit of a gap opening up at the bottom. Do 2 or 3 go down? Funny how Durham are struggling too when they've traditionally been strong recently too.

Last season I think Lancs just got some early momentum and kept it going. This season has started badly and got worse! We seem incapable of scoring over 200. This match aside we've bowled fairly well but the batting just isn't comeptitive at the moment.

Warwickshire 557/6d
Lancashire 197 & 66/1 (f/o) (19.0 ov)

Lancashire trail by 294 runs with 9 wickets remaining
Tea - Day 3

Remarkable, 66 and only one wicket down! Haven't seen that too often this season.

Yes. Played for the England Lions as well, was being looked at as a future England International. Very sad news.

Great win for Lancs in the T20 on Wednesday. Slipped up in the field and let Leicestershire get 129 or thereabouts from the last 10 overs to end up on 179 but Lancs managed to chase it down with an over or two to spare.

Could do with a good run in the T20 or CB40 to make up for the championship form.

I read that Lancs have won more Twenty20 games than any other county. They just always seem to fall short when it comes to the knock out stages. Hopefully this year.

Anyone been/going to any games? I went to one at Lord's last year but nothing planned this year.

Good article by Michael Vaughan about the way T20 works in this country

http://intranet.sefton.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=3165

The way that England players play hardly any county cricket is ridiculous. If they had a couple of weeks in the middle of the season when there was no international cricket played and all the England players could go back to their counties and play it would be much better.

The weather might spoil it but most years aren't too bad.

Something needs to be done about T20 in this country, but it needs someone to go against the wishes of the counties and say "we're doing it this way, get over it"
