Jonjo Shelvey is starting to show the ability to do something none of our other midfielders do often enough now that Gerrard is being more conservative - drive at pace through the middle of the field with the ball. It's a centre-back's nightmare, having to deal with someone running straight at you, whilst also trying to contain the striker you're marking who's looking to get in behind you.
The last time I remember Gerrard doing it for 90 minutes was the Everton game where he bagged 3. Now I'm not comparing the two, but the only one of our midfielders who tries it more than once a game at the moment is Adam, who is normally let down by his myopic vision and average decision-making in the final third.
If you don't have a forward who's going to drop off, turn, and run (and we don't, Suarez does most of his work in wider areas) then you need midfielders willing to take that risk but also have the quality to produce something at the end of it. Shelvey looks to be working towards that player. Frank Lampard's made a career out of it. It's not a #10 role, it's more of a #8 with the ability to drive forward and overload the attack. If he can have half the career Lampard's had in that position, we're on to a winner.
