The military junta leading Guinea, headed by Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, raped, killed and wounded protesters during a protest rally in a stadium called Stade du 28 Septembre.

The country of Iran successfully tested long-rang missiles amid controversy over the country’s nuclear enrichment program. The missiles have the potential to reach US military bases in the region and Israel.

Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

The final day of the XXVIII Olympiad.

Along with the closing ceremony, Stefano Baldini (Ita) 2h10:55s won the marathon and Amir Khan lost in the gold medal match with Mesa of Cuba. Always good at boxing those Cubans, they won 3 of the 6 boxing golds on offer that day...

Two military plane crashes for me.

2003 Iran Ilyushin Il-76 crash: A military plane carrying 302 members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards crashed in the mountains of southeastern Iran
killing all on board. The government did not go into the possible cause of the crash. The plane was en route from Zahedan, on the Pakistan border, to Kerman, about 500 miles southeast of Tehran.

An air force Fokker F27 crashes in fog-shrouded mountains near the northwestern city of KohatPakistan, killing Pakistan air force chief Air Chief Marshal Mushaf Ali, his wife and 15 others.[7]

June 11, 2010 - Start of the Fifa World Cup.  As I remember I finally registered as I wanted to take part in discussions about the removal of Rafa, ownership issues (and transfers  :-[ ) but not the World Cup.  Could not really rely on my posting history as I deleted a huge amount of them during a period of disillusion and was planning to erase any footprint left on here by me...but kept the post count at 50.

Ahmadinejad criticizes Paul the octopus

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claims Paul the octopus, who correctly guessed the outcomes of eight matches of the World Cup, is a sign of decay of Western culture.

Ahmadinejad said in a speech at a youth festival in Tehran, "Those who believe in this type of thing cannot be the leaders of the global nations that aspire, like Iran, to human perfection, basing themselves in the love of all sacred values."

"We are after constructing Iran, but this does not mean viewing the matter from nationalist angle and singling out the Iranian race. Today the name of Iran is synonymous with prestige, justice seeking, monotheism, anti-despotism, and the entire blessed values that are dear for the world nations," he continued.

Effect credit Scuba 1.mp3 by digifishmusic
An Irish journalist, Rory Fitzgerald, wrote a satirical piece in response to the president's remarks. "A visibly shaken Paul spoke out earlier today saying: 'As an octopus, I can claim some objectivity in my view [of] human affairs,'?" Fitzgerald wrote.

The mollusk correctly predicted the outcome of Germany's seven matches and picked Spain over the Netherlands for the World Cup final.

Paul currently lives in a tank at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany.
