Think it would intriguing for all interested.

It's done here as well. Seeing how much you're invested in the LOTR universe from the way you've talked about the subject in the past, I expected it could have been more detailed and targeted specific aspects that were added/dropped (Bombadil/barrows for ex) but you've explained that already as to why.

Good luck on the dissertation :wave.

And as a sidenote I still bear some hope that some day we'll get to compare the book and film adaptation of the Silmarillion as well. Something meditative and morose a la 2001:Space Odyssey/Tree of Life/

The one thing that makes me hopeful about a Silmarillion adaptation is Game of Thrones. An HBO series of the Silmarillion would be incredible. Probably never happen but at least GoT has shown there's an audience when it's done well enough.

Really have a lot of problems with the films. Mainly to do with the adaptation, not in terms of what was taken away, although some stuff they should have left in, not to mention the way characters were fundementally rewritten was atrocious, but what was added is the main issue for me. Cutting stuff that works in a book but wouldnt on film is expected and is like trimming fat, but it doesnt work when you take out all the Maggot/Bombadil/Dunedan stuff and shoehorn in feminist bullshit empowerment crap in the shape of Arwen. That I suspect was down to studio interference as much as Jackson being nothing more than a two bit shlock horror director who got lucky. I'd go so far as to say that Jacksons version is LOTR in name only, it lacks the beauty and subtly and emotional nuances of Tolkiens writing, the changes made to both characters and story fundementally change it from the book as to make it unrecognisable as the same work outside of names and situations, its not merely a question of taste or a result of needed choices made for adaptation, its a hack job. Never should of been nominated for any Oscars either, let alone win any, only reason it did was because of the money made.

Really fear seeing how he has fucked the Hobbit up.

Hey, I didn't like the films really, either. Not because of the changes from the books, I just thought they were shite. As is Peter Jackson generally.

Well exactly, he is shite, thats really the total sum of it, if a better director had done it they would of been better. God even if there was a different writer doing the adaptation, it might have made a difference, but he fucking did it as well.

So you aren't looking forward to endless helicopter fly-by shots and cheesy voiceovers in the Hobbit?

Or the wonderful shocky jump moments which will be so unexpectedly expected and of course the monsteriffic extravaganza plus ghosty bits which come purely form his own fucking mind and are nothing to do with the story and not in the book.

I thought they worked better than the heavily edited cinema releases. He's a talented story teller, imo. I'm not sure it's possible to make the film as close to the books as you seem to wish and still have them function as cinema.

I've poured over his making-of material on his DVDs and it's clear 'luck' doesn't come into it.

Agreed. It's not luck that made them boring. Or had the main elf do stupid shit in battles. Or had the main dwarf become annoying comedy relief as the series went on. Or stuck on 8 endings. Still, I'll always be grateful for my Cate Blanchett elf sex fantasies.

:D  I agree with all of that, except the boring bit. There was plenty that took my breath away, such as the Balrog, the first time you see Saruman's army from the balcony. As for the endings, I think I switched off with Sam and Frodo on the slopes of Mount Doom (just as I did with the books)

Its not a question of being as faithful as possible, at least in terms of taking stuff out. Its totally acceptable to take things like Bombadil out, it was overdrawn in the book and wouldnt work on film, plus its a hobbits in trouble - hobbits saved - hobbits travel on section, which is the same as the next bit of Aragorn taking them from the pony to Rivendell. To do that on film would wreck the pacing of a feeling of a fast paced chase, in the book they behave like they are on holiday taking picnics and shit, even after the supposed sheer terror of being chased and nearly caught by the Nazgul in the shire itself.

The characterisation aspect is most key though and its all over the place. Even if the books werent there as the source the characterisation would still be all over the place. I could easily do a Plinkett style review of these films, they are terrible on lots of levels. There is a LOTR or Hobbit thread in media and arts where I've made a lot of these points.

Actually my first encounter with LotR was the BBC radio play.  Our teacher played us an episode every couple of weeks back when I was 10.  ;D

And there was the animated film as well.

Love the book but have avoided watching the films. Hope that doesn't mess up your survey, there was no 'haven't seen the films' option. Don't like how films overwrite the images in your head with someone else's imagination.
