This. Richards is ridiculously quick. He would be my first choice at Right back. No idea whats going on with him though. Fantastic for Kelly though. Whatever others may think of England, playing for your country would ba a huge honor for him.

Wouldn't go that far, I seem to remember Downing beating him for pace quite easily. You do realise that Zabaleta has been City's first choice RB for a quite a while now?

yep Downing did easily beat him for pace. Johnson is number 1 right back and rightfully, no matter how much the press clamour for him to be replaced, the managers no matter how clueless they may be thought, always pick Glen.

Richards should be playing at CB, if he wasnt so thick and Lescott has been immense this year. But right back? think he's too thick there too, he's got all the physical attributes and aint too bad on the ball either. Zabaleta though absolutely kills him in the intelligence department :P as well as being competent physically and technically

Congrats to Martin though, don't think he's as good as richards there but Roy has chosen him and its a great opportunity

Well done Martin lad. Need some c*nt to get injured now for England so he can go the Euros. Who though? Roy has picked just one player who can play at RB. And we don't want him injured.

I think Richards is relatively fast but not lightning, maybe Kelly's level of pace. What makes Richards look quicker than he is is the fact that everyone bounces off him because of how strong he is and other times players just don't bother going near him whilst he's charging forward. It'd be epic if Kelly is Johnson's number 2 for England at the Euros. Roy, I forgive you.  :P

6 games?

at the end of the season in your most important games, that's more testament to the fact he's been playing well like.

i don't watch city so can't possibly comment on richards apart from saying he's a fucking tank (only a fair bit faster!)

anyway, i don't think this means that kelly would be ahead of richards. richards is probably unavailable for one reason or other, especially considering it's just a bit part role for one friendly match. probably off on his hols already.

well in to kelly though

Hasn't Kelly always played CB for the U-21s?  I can't recall him at right back, but then I don't watch England U-21s that often either.

Think he said that last season and it shows how much he's come on as Mancini selected him as captain when Kompany was injured and suspended this season.

Richards really should be in the England squad, considering the other players that have been selected. Happy for Kelly though, hopefully he'll continue progressing and be part of the qualifiers for the World Cup (though admittedly it will be under Roy).

I've always rated Richards (as a RB) but many a manager seems to be ignoring him. Capello didnt fancy him, Mancini even dropped him towards the end of the season in favour of Zabaleta now Roy is seemingly giving him a very wide berth (and with RB Gary Neville as a part of his staff).

Perhaps he's really not all that good? He's always had the tag of being more an athlete then he is a footballer, but I really thought he was absolutely fine as a fullback. Strange.

Anyways congrats to Kelly. Just keep in mind that those hamstrings belong to Liverpool lad.

Not that it matters especially, Walker will inherit the position from Johnson based on hype alone.

You might be right Cpt_Reina but to be fair about Mancini, Zabaleta is a fine player himself and some Man City fans on here did say his form made him undroppable for the last few games. I personally thought Richards was playing really this season and felt Capello should have used him more than he did but yeah, maybe he did have valid concerns.

As for Roy, well, it's Roy. Given that he picked Jones and would have picked Walker, it's difficult to see his thinking as Richards is comfortably better than both (although Jones' versatility was mentioned by Roy, still performing average in every position isn't necessarily a good thing).

Only just heard and whilst I'm surprised by the news, I'm made up for Martin, well in lad. I'm in a minority that doesn't think Micah Richards is that good a player, he's alright, not even the best right back at his club. Having said that, Zabaleta's class and Richards is definitely better than Walker or Jones. It'll be a big confidence booster. Roy seems to love our lads.
In regards to Richards, I think that 'Athlete' tag has stuck, but it's by no means unwarranted. Glen's got flack for years and had the myth perpetuated that he's ;good going forward but can't defend.' That definitely applies to Richards. Flies forward and is a handful, but lacks Glen's or even Martin's intelligence and quality in the final third. Also, he can't mark a man well in defensive situations. Often gives them a run or too much space. Great at attacking the aerial ball though. Despite all this, Roy's chosen a player who's not that good at CB or DM as his RB cover and was going to take the inadequate Kyle Walker, who is worse than Johnson, Richards and Kelly.

Why are some of you surprised that he has been selected ahead of Micah?? Micah has fallen down the pecking order at club level because at fullback he simply isn'ta mobile enough.

Kelly long term will probably play CB but even at FB he is more agile and mobile than Micah and can whip in a better cross, not perfect but better than Micah.

Richards is a CB, but he cannot eve dislodge Lescott from the City side and this is probably be use s he has matured he still has nota ironed outa the 1 mistake a game issue that has always effected him.

This is partly due to the fact he hasn't played CB in a LONG time.

Bunch of bollocks. He's a rb who played cb under Sven for a season or so.

He's also city's first team rb if he's fit. Hes also one of the only players along with kompany to survive city's revolutions which must prove his quality.

He's just that mobile and athletic that he would make a good cb. But he's a rb.

Well done to Kelly. Really want to see him at cb next season for more games.

I thought he was too. Ive always liked him, he can dominate the entire flank on his day. But Capello knows his onions and he wouldn't go near Richards. And on the face of it Roy is just as uncertain. Surely he must have spoken to Neville about the RBs? He knows a thing or two about the position.

Kelly is much more a Roy RB then Richards anyway if we're being honest. That's not to say he's better overall (I dont think he is) but Id go as far to say he's a better defender, and one more likely to hold his defensive shape then Richards would be.

Richards is a very good right-back but Zabaleta is a lot better, positionally Richards can be shocking.

Agree about Kelly being a much better fit for Roy than Richards. And t'll be interesting to see how he uses Cole and Johnson in the summer given how he likes to set up.
