My issue here is not with the content of the Glen's interview, but rather the timing of it.
Luis Suarez, Glen Johnson and the club should have come out ages ago, giving an exclusive interview to whatever paper, explaining exactly the gist of the situation, much like LondonBarnes has stated above: "we're sorry for using a word that might be misconstrued as racist, Suarez isn't racist, cultural differences, Johnson isn't an unkle tom, diddly-doo, rainbows and buttercups" Get it all out in the open in a newspaper, don't trust that people will read a club statement or that people will read a 115-page report.
The club should then have told everyone not to address the situation in the media again because any answer, however thoughtful, can be edited and bastardized. When faced with this interview, Glen would then have simply said "I've already said all I needed to say, thanks but I won't answer any questions on the subject.", and that's it. Nobody would have interpreted that as a slight on Suarez --> no story.
But rather, the club never made its position clear (it closed up shop and released statements), Suarez and Johnson never had a chance to explain themselves, so here we are, weeks later, and this whole mess is out in the open again. I can understand why Johnson chose to answer the questions (and he did a fine job of it on the whole, except for the dubious reverse racism thing), he's had all that stuff he's wanted to say from the beginning and never had the chance to.
The club has let its players, manager and fans down on this one. Talk about summer signings, we need to hire a proper PR person as soon as possible.
