8 out of 9 of Luis Suarez's shots that have hit the woodwork have happened when Andy Carroll has been off the pitch.

This stat proves RAWK CARROLL LAW which states that the mere presence of the Big Yin makes Luis' shots hit the post and go in instead of out.

Maybe it is some gravitational effect.

By any standards thats a lot.

Posts and pens.
They cannot be used as an excuse.
It's more down to the type of chance we have created. We build up slowly and so our chances are normally taken when the oppostion have more defenders back in good positions.
This means we have less of the target to aim at as we are forced to shoot from further away or their players are blocking a part of the goal.
The chances that have hit the woodwork are a couple of inches from being off target as well as from being a goal.
We don't have many one on ones or gaping goals missed. This is because we don't play with enough pace or craft to create this type of chance.
It's down to tactics rather than misfortune.

As for pens, players have been fighting over the ball this season when we've got one. It's good to have keen players but if there is any doubt whatsoever in a players mind it can make the difference. If we had a designated taker before the game then the player would know during it that if there is a pen he'll take it and this would be more conducive to having complete certainty when taking it - leading to more pens converted.
This again is a choice to make prior to the game like tactics.

the henderson shot today that hit the bar and then hit foster on the back and bounced to safety sums the season up. contrast that to sessegnon's shot away at sunderland which hits the post then hits reina on the back and falls right into bendtner's path for a tap in.

Maybe something in this. Also it maybe bad luck to hit the woodwork 30 plus times, but like Rafa said, it's the small details. I remember Torres quoting Rafa, when he told him to stand two more metres closer to the penalty spot or something like that, and it changed Torres goal scoring record completely.........

I think our posts are to wide.

Perhaps or it's due to a geomagnetic anomaly as we approach sunspot maxima.

Also, some say that Mr Ferguson has developed a device which is capable of tilting the earth on it's axes while the ball is in flight thus directing it onto the woodwork on demand.
Wait til Bigus Dickus hears of this!

Id be shocked if we DIDNT hit the post in a game this season now, its become so routine that it just doesnt bug me anymore. Also if we were to get a pen I also have no faith this season and putting those away either.

Imagine half of those pens/posts go in...thats 21 goals extra this season on only half...wed be challenging if not in the top 4 right now thats how ridiculous this season has become.

God imagine them 2/3 to all of them going in wed probably be challenging for the freaking league.

I just cant wait for the seasons to end and pray that next season our luck isnt so shit.

I think weve played some good football this season, not amazing but good. We deserved to finish alot higher than we have this season imo but we failed we do need to buy some better attack minded players in the off season because Kuyt, Maxi, Henderson, Downing, Adam have contributed what? 11-12 goals in all comps? Thats pretty bad for attack minded midfielders.

Also im sick of people saying maxi is not being used enough, his goals paper over the fact that he goes missing so often and offers no real skill down the wings, if anything he should be played as centre attacking mid.

Cant wait for Maxi and Kuyt to be gone so we can bring in some better wingers hopefully, I pray we do.

I think they need to check the size of the goals they are using at training. They must be a foot to big. Give them smaller ones to practice with.

we are not unlucky, we are profligate in front of goal

I hate the fact that, as usual on here, you have to be on one side of the fence or the other.  We are profligate in front of goal AND we have been very unlucky in front of goal.  What's more the two are interdependent, interwoven even.  Scoring goals breeds confidence, both in the individual and the team, in strikers scoring goals leads to hot streaks where they cannot miss, missing chances leads to anxiety, overthinking and yet more missed chances.

Yesterday we were profligate, Kuyt's early miss, Suarez blazing over.  We were also incredibly unlucky, The penalty, the two post hits, the 8 million ricochets that never quite went our way.

I agree with this. Always an element of luck to everything but when the stats get this high an argument like this makes some sense. I'm sure there are a number of other variables too. How does that saying go? 'You make your own luck'. Whether that is true or not, it is something I try to follow as then there are no excuses. Very hard to though. Played a game with friends last Sat and can't stop thinking about that post that I hit. Would have been a beauty!

You've summed it up nicely VDM. There's no way it could be all profligacy or bad luck, clearly there must be elements of both to have hit the woodwork on so many occasions

Forgot about the Newcastle handball. For all our problems this season, we've had quite a bit of bad luck (just like in 09/10), with the West Brom game being the latest example, with Maxi being tripped in the box but no penalty given.
"My coach told me to warm up just before the break. He told me I was going to take care of Kaka. I didn't think it was possible to turn things around but in the dressing room at halftime Rafa Benitez was calm - "We are Liverpool FC, we have so many fans, we are not going to be slaughtered. If we can score a goal quickly we push on from there.""

hate this thread so much, is confirmation bias and makes you feel like we are on the right track. but football isn't like that, you either score or you don't. every team has shots that hit the post, close calls etc. nobody seems to grasp that teams are comfortable defending against us, they are happy for us to have the ball. never solved that problem out.

I can't be arsed with this amount of posts crap, as far as I'm concerned if you've missed you've missed. We've been wasteful on far more than 31 occasions this season. Address that.

Seriously doubt that any team in the world has hit the woodwork 41 times a season.

There's nothing wrong with this thread at all. The thing that we've just got to recognise is that hitting the post and bar all the time is not bad luck. These are shots on target. We need to get them on target. It just shows how close we are getting though.
"When you play Stoke you always hope for a strong ref, someone who will try and clamp down on the persistent fouling and allow the better players on the pitch to actually play some footy.  We got Kevin Friend, an official so inept, I am surprised he managed to turn up at the right ground."
