how does it work? Cardiff in Europe if we get into the UCL or the next in the EPL?

Will be a good learning experience for the CL, if we don't get in the CL.

What the hell happened to us?! Why have our expectations become as mediocre as our playing style?! Europa League is not were we belong and I don't understand how anyone could be happy about that. It really is insulting.

I'm sorry but I'm cringing a bit lads, as if youse are that made up about qualifying for the Europa League, we'd of gotten it easily without the fact we won the cup anyway.

Don't think it would be easy. If we'd lost, Cardiff would take one place There's a chance that Spurs, Chelsea will go out of the FA Cup so with the two Manc clubs and Arsenal out already the FA Cup winner would take another leaving fifth spot as the only Europa League spot based on league position.

Funnily enough I think the guarantee of being back in europe will help us in the chase for 4th as we can go for it in games with the knowledge we have a safety net of having won a cup already aswell. The handbrake should be off now and we can finally push more men into the box when attacking.

I dunno about that mate. Its only 5th isnt it? Newcastle Chelsea Arsenal are going to be 4/5/6th place contenders. Its done now, pressures off.

Bird in the hand and all that

And I love Europa League. Dunno how people can sit round going its shit. Great trophy to win, 4th is preferable obviously but now we just sealed Europe (aswell as the trophy of course) yesterday Im buzzing!

Is correct. Liverpool belong in Europe but it's not a right and we need to earn our place. Some on here sound like Spurs fans who think a couple of decent games makes them part of the European elite who can look down their noses at the competition.

It's important to be back in Europe to build up our coefficient so that we get a decent draw when or if we're back in the Champions League. With six or seven strong teams at the top of the Premier League there will be more occasions when we don't make the Champions League. Anyone not taking the Europa League seriously and going out early (like good old 'Arry) could find themselves at a disadvantage in the Champions League in the years they do qualify and potentially lose the Premier League one of its four places in the long term. Poor performances in the UEFA Cup played a part in Italy losing one of their Champions League spots to Germany. Our UEFA Cup win in 2001 (apart from being a great final and a pot in the trophy cabinet) helped get the fourth spot.

Think the Europa League is going to become a bigger tournament, teams all over the world are becoming stronger and stronger and bigger clubs are falling out at the group stages in the CL as seen this year.  I think it's going to become more and more common as billionaires start to buy more and more football clubs.

Agree with those that say Europe is Europe. Goes without saying we'd rather be in the Champions League, but if that can't be so I'd love to see us have a real go at the Europa again next year.

What about the entire SQUAD development? The EL is an important development arena for young players who are on the verge of the first team and/or the fringe players. Imagine if we were in it this year how match fit would be Flanagan, Robo, Kelly, Coates, Spearing, how players like Silva, Coady, and Sterling can get a game, and even players like Maxi, Kuyt and Aurelio can feature in there.

Cruyff: "Victory is not enough, there also needs to be beautiful football."

From that thread:

To be fair any of our 'fans' that think this is a 'joke' competition aren't real fans. They are shithouse hangers on that should be nowhere near our great club. They should fuck off and 'support' the Mancs or something.

Liverpool FC exists to win trophies and this is a very special one. Just like the League cup. Been to every final since the 80s and any 'fan' that doesn't respect that competition can fuck right off as well. They are just embarrasing.

seem to recall people suggesting that we played well at the tail end of last season due to the 'pressure' being off

in a way qualifying for the europa could have a similar effect if we were to adopt the 'anything else is a bonus' approach from here on in

but i don't think we'll be adopting that approach to be honest - pressure will be on for fourth and we'll see how we react

still would've liked to have seen a few additions in january to give the squad a boost to be honest

but looked at objectively a year in the EL before moving onto to CL (assuming we did) might be of benefit if we can (i) do well (ii) improve the coefficient again (iii) get the squad geared up for european matches during the week and (iv) help blood a few more youngsters

Aye. Us winning the CC is a reward for going to the likes of Exeter and Brighton with full squads so early in the season.

Anyway as for Europe it'll be nice to have the Europa to fall back on should we fall short of a CL place, even if it is the ugly sister competition. Will be nice to take midweek trips to Anfield once again.

I love the EL. Why?

The games are still as challenging to a degree

Most games are on TV for FREE. THATS RIGHT, NO SKY CIRCUS

While not on the level of the CL, EL has decent atmosphere in its games and is always a good place to solidify our reputation of our famous atmosphere (although we don't need to)

Its a fantastic chance to test our youngsters

Its also a good place for us to try different players in different positions. We as a team don't have the luxury of trying new formations willy nilly in our league games as every league game is important for us

Its a good place for kenny to flex his muscles and get a hold of europe football again rather then being thrown in the deep end.

The games are cheaper to go to in terms of stadium costs (albiet, travel maybe more for lokomotiv moskow esq teams)

Its a piece of silverware for us to win, silverware shows reputation. Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas reputation for potential chelsea candidate was massively helped by winning the EL.

Another game to see liverpool play.

Just a few reasons.

Not posted on here for quite a while as emigrated, but I think people are underestimating massively what Liverpool have achieved in the last 14 months - we were literally on the verge of down and out - cast our minds back to those months in December with Hodgson in charge and the utter shambles that was around the club - not so much down the road, and we have silverware, back in Europe, no immediate financial worries and a belief in the fans - it's not completely fixed, but rewind not so long ago, and our achievements cannot be underestimated... Well done Redmen, and a welcome return to Europe, no matter which competition we play in...

I could be wrong, but doesn't the FA Cup Europa League place go to the runners up before it goes to the league position?

So if a Spurs/Chelsea won the FA Cup*, if the other team haven't qualified through the league, there'd still only be the one spot in the league to fight over.

*and assuming they've qualified for Europe through the league.

I honestly think this is why Kenny took this competition so seriously. It's a back up plan should we not get into 4th, or even still if we slipped in the league and finished 7th or 8th we'd still have European Football to our name!

A year out makes me realize how much I miss it.

Indeed.

More importantly, it will give some of our younger players European experience.  Blooding them in the Europa will prepare them for the CL when we eventually get there again.

I think if we'd been in the CL this season we would have crashed and burned as I don't think we'd have been ready.
