Rioting at Egyptian football match
« on: February 1, 2012, 07:09:30 pm »
Apparently rioting has broke out an Eygptian football game, with 35 dead and one of the stands on fire. WTF

http://www.globalnews.ca/26+people+killed+in+egyptian+soccer+riot+after+match/6442571643/story.html

CAIRO - A medical official at an Egyptian morgue says 35 people have been killed in fan clashes after a soccer game in Port Said.

A security official says fans of a winning Egyptian football team flooded the field seconds after a match with a major rival team was over, attacking players and fans of their opponents.

The security official said the fans chased the players and cornered their supporters on the field in the port city of Port Said and around the stadium, throwing stones and bottles at them.

Both officials were speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Al-Masry team won a rare 3-1 against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team. The two teams have a long history of bad blood, and clashes have erupted in recent years between their fans.

Thousands of supporters covered the field, according to a video posted online.

They're covering the riot on CNN and Euronews.  Just the same footage over and over again.

CNN are pissing me off.  They keep bringing Hillsborough.  Saying that when it all kicked off, people couldn't get out.

I know some of those who died, it was terrible to watch from the start, and the ref and the security officials forced the game to go through, 53 dead now and 1000 in critical conditions and Masry fans refusing entry for the ambulances into the stadium. League's postponed now.       Edit, 73 dead now.

Al-Jazeera now saying 73 dead in Port Said. Also a stadium alight in Cairo, and rumours of three Ahly players being injured.
Three injured players are fine right now, but lots of fans dead.

Fire is in the Cairo stadium where Zamalek v Ismaily was happening, upon hearing the news in Port Said, players decided to stop the match and stand hand in hand for a minute. Some fans rioted in protest of the decision.

Havnt seen any of the news yet, as I'm out, just what I've seen on the web. Any idea what set it off. Is there a bad history between the clubs?

Yeah there is some bad blood between  the two clubs but it was never that bad, it is strange because there were talks for weeks about this game and how sports shouldn't be violent and how they wanted this match to be a festival. Guess they got their wish  :-X :no. It should be noted that this happened after the emergency laws are no longer in effect.

Egypt football pitch invasion leaves dozens dead

At least 50 people reported killed during pitch invasion following match between Al-Masry and Al-Ahly in Port Said

At least 50 people have been killed in violence following a football match in Port Said, when fans invaded the pitch seconds after a match against a rival team.

It was one of the worst incidents of sports violence in Egypt in decades.

A security official and a medic said fans of the home team, Al-Masry, invaded the pitch after a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team. They threw stones, fireworks and bottles at the fans and injured some players.

A medic at a morgue in Port Said, a city on the Mediterranean coast, said some of the dead were security officers. He was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to reporters.

The causes of the deaths were not immediately known.

A statement from Egypt's ministry of health putting the death toll at 40 carried on state television.

The players were later taken to their dressing rooms for protection, Sayed Hamdi, a player told state television.

Soon after the violence, a game between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek in Cairo was called off in mourning for the violence in Port Said.

State television showed video of sections of the Cairo stadium on fire. The announcer said angry Zamalek fans had set some sections of the stadium on fire in protest at the match's cancellation.

Probably a little more to it than a 'football match'.  With the long standing State of Emergency laws no longer in effect it could become an almost free for all.
