Yeah - thats well better than playing well and winning stuff.

You're crazy if you think fans want players to fail.  The people venting their frustrations are doing so because they want us to succeed.  They do not want the players to fail.

To get back on topic.  Downing is a heart and a set of balls away from being a player.  So frustrating.  You can see he's got it - but he's not brave enough to use it.

i think you'd be surprised.

but yes lets get back on topic

-He had two against United (one for Kuyt where he put the ball in the channel and De Gea made a great save and one that Henderson missed with a header from the edge of the six yard box)
-Two against Man City, one of which Kuyt missed the header (it was a deflected cross though) and one where Kuyt just didn't stretch far enough and just missed on the back post
-One long pass to Suarez against Villa where Suarez hit the post (was not a cross but still worth mentioning)
-One against Wolves where Carroll hit the bar inside the six yard box
-One against Swansea which was "that miss" by Carroll
-Two against Norwich (Kuyt and Bellamy) that they headed right at the keeper on the six
-His cross against Bolton where Carroll simply missed the ball
-This wasn't a cross but he played the ball through to Carroll in the first leg against City which he hit right at Hart.
-Also not a cross but he played in Suarez against QPR and Suarez missed the target from just outside the six

If you take those instances, and couple them with the fact that he has hit the bar against Sunderland, Fulham (both of these after cracking runs), and West Brom while forcing Hart into great saves both in the second leg of the CC and in the two league games, you can really see the impact that he's made beyond the statistics.

He certainly has been rough around the edges, but if just half of these opportunities had hit the back of the net (and that's generous considering some of the chances on this list), you'd be talking about a player with around 4 goals and 6 assists, and I don't think people would be complaining about that return. He's definitely a confidence player though, but hopefully an increase in confidence will see some returns over the next few months.

downing has not played as well as he can this season, but it is far from black and white.....a couple of goals for him and from his crosses and who knows what would have happened to his season.....but that never happened, we have failed as a team to be clinical, and all our individuals have generally not been clinical enough in front of goal, downing included......and that needs to be considered when assessing everyone's performance to date

however, we now get to start all over again.....i feel we have reached a watershed in our season....we have got to a cup final, and knocked the mancs out and put a couple of performances together after a poor one at bolton.....the race for 4th is on, and we are still in it......and our squad is now fit, and everyone has had a spell of form and got on the score sheet, so downing now really has to earn a game now.....and that can only be good for the team, with bellamy, kuyt, henderson, gerrard, suarez, maxi and downing all providing something in terms of width and shape downing is not an automatic pick, and results are what will determine our teams, formations and subs......and downing can now concentrate on him playing, and delivering, knowing the competition is high and the trust is there if he is selected

so now, i think, is a good time for us to look to forward, take what we have seen to date but not judge too much...in my opinion downing has much to offer, and i reckon he will have more opportunities to deliver as the season goes....but we will not be dependent on him alone for chances......also a good opportunity to move on from spanish winger cum midfielders, even though it is 6 months later than it should have been

I'm sorry, he's not good enough. :/

He can't go past a defender, he can't cross, he's technically weak and, basically, not good enough.

goes to show how wrong everything and everyone can be about a player. fuck me his crossing is awful. and that is being kind. yet this summer all we went on about is how is crossing would benefit the team.

Technically weak? Yeah okay.

Not much he could've done today considering Spurs were playing in their 18-yard box. Ran the ball out for a goalkick? Maybe?

The crossing comments, fair enough. Same with everyone in the team really.

Perhaps,  Downing isn't used to being a squad player, being rotated as frequently as he has. he was always gauranteed to get a game at Villa and Middlesborough, whereas with us there's clearly an adjustment he is finidng difficult to make.

Anyway, enough of this he's shite nonsense, because he clearly isn't.
Just hasn't adapted as well as hoped.

Totally agree and because Carroll has struggled I think Downing has had a smoke screen from that because boy he is no way a good buy if anything worse than Carroll because Carroll show,s that he his hungary.

Sorry, as soon as you see him warming up, I doubt anyone thinks here we go, we are bringing in the big guns!  He doesn't seem to offer more of attacking threat then ANY of our fullbacks.  Seriously if it was a toss up between Babel and Downing....I would fly the helicopter to Germany myself and swap him

Probably picking on downing a bit because they were all at it but for International footballers to be unable to beat the first man with a cross is unforgivable. Its just unbelievable and when they do it from free kicks I want to murder them

Clearly I don't agree. He was a relatively big fish at his old clubs and didn't do badly. Showed ability and that is what we've seen in him to make the investment. As i say, he's not been able to make the adjustment yet. hether he will or not remains to be seen. Its happened to plenty of players who've come to us before.

I can understand the frustration of seeing him not produce, but to call him shite is just  ridiculous. Or, all the experts on here more knowledgeable than Kenny and the coaching staff?

i think 20mil is the new 10mil and hulk/lavezzi/hazard is the new 20-30mil. meaning fans to stop thinking the owners paid top dollar for a winger but that the market for a great winger is no longer 20mil which is the price of average to maybe slightly above average winger. If we want the best we need to cough up top dollar in the range of 25 to 40mil. the hardest skill is to dribble beat your man and cross at speed at the only pinpoint place where your striker can score. much harder than a strikers job.
If you judge people for what they are not who they are, you will make genuine friends rather than friends of circumstance.

No it isn't. It was the right substitution, and frankly I'm surprised it didn't come earlier given how tired Bellamy looked but he offered nothing and his shot was the most predictable thing ever. If you had a cartoon-esque thought bubble you could see it that his would've said "I should shoot in this position right?". He didn't have any belief in himself that he'd score there and when it went over he seemed more bemused than frustrated.
