I can't believe Newcastle are still in the running. Thought they'd be down in 9th long ago.

I think out of all 4 current contenders Chelsea have to be the favourites. If Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas stick with a midfield of Meireles, Mata and then Essien coming back I think that's pretty good. Just hoping Torres doesn't suddenly click into gear because if he does Chelsea will be very dangerous.

Of the three most likely (still think Newcastle will drop pretty soon) we are in the best form at the moment. Chelsea have the hardest run-in, too.

I still think it's too early towrite off Spurs getting drawn back towards the pack. They have a very very hard run of games coming up and after that we could be talking about a race for 3rd imo.

The equivalent match comp is designed to take into account the difficulty a team has against certain opponents, Spurs are well up on last season, expecting them to "collapse" is not realistic, IMO

Maybe, but according to The Prof's Alternative table (based on par performances per match according to difficulty) it's a different story altogether. They've only had two results "above par" all season. Which means they are very consistent at home and against the smaller clubs, but haven't done it against the big boys on the road yet.

They still have to travel to Anfield, The Emirates and Stamford Bridge, and they've got a home game to Utd which they'll throw because they are all really just closet Utd fans and hate to see their first team lose.

My guess is that they'll hold onto third, although what happens if Redknapp goes to jail is anyone's guess...

We've been saying this for the majority of the season, Spurs are nailed on for the 3rd place position. In the end i think 4th place would be contested between us and Newcastle, Chelsea are in awful form, and Arsenal are just awful full stop, Newcastle still have Ba and Cisse to come back and we have Suarez so i would say us two are in pole position.

At this point, there is only 1 team that I can say will finish in a specific spot, with a high degree of certainty......and that is Spurs will finish 3rd!

I've always liked Martinez as a coach, so it would be a bit sad for me if they went down, but I can't see them staying up.

Chelsea are in poor form, but they'll get it together and go on a run sooner or later.  So will we, possibly, but I think they'll finish ahead of Spurs at season's end.  I think Spurs will beat us to fourth by 3-4 points, which will be very frustrating.  I'm not as worried about Arsenal, because if we finish behind them it means we had no chance at fourth anyway, but they're only marginally worse than we are, so while I think we'll beat them I wouldn't write them off totally.

Frustrating because if we were going to put it together for a third place finish or even a title challenge, this would have been a great year to do it with all the problems at our rival clubs.  In the end, if we win a cup and get 5th, I think that's an OK result from the season and we can push on next year.

The race is well and trully hitting the back straight for 4th spot but still loads of twists and turns before May. As long as we are within 4 - 6 points with 5 games to play then we will see whos has the largest balls for the last dash to the line as it will be a close one this season.

Really is quite mental how people will post about "can we finish 4th?" in here and then say they hope for a draw or a Chelsea win at the weekend, just because it's against Man Utd.

Do you want us to be in the champions league next season or don't you? Because Chelsea beating Man Utd on Sunday won't help that whatsoever. You'll laugh for the rest of the day, then realise we're now 7 points behind instead of 4 with a game in hand. Really worth it.

Honestly, it's ridiculous. Nobody's saying you have to cheer them on, but anyone would think some are more anti-Utd fans than they are Liverpool fans.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

At the same stage of the Champions League in 2005, we weren't good enough to win the CL leage either. I could see Chelsea possibly winning it. I can see them turning it on for the big games.

How painfully ironic would that be considering that the only reason they would be in the CL is because of the ruling that was passed because of us in the first place.

Dont like the look of our last game of the season.....

Currently?  Fair enough.

But who is to say what this fixture could mean to Swansea?

They might be in mid table safety with their minds on holiday.  They might be mid table and playing without any pressure wanting to put up a show for their home support.

They might need to win it to stop up and be up for it.  Then again, they might even bottle it.

They might not have 1 injury all season and continue the form that they are in - then again they might lose four of their most important players.

4th is do able but who know what the situation will be?  We might have even secured top 4!

Agreed We need the mancs to win or at least get a draw.Once the result benefits us then who gives a fuck what they do.If city after spending god knows how much, can't win this league against arguably the worst united squad the tramp has assemnled since he first won the league, then that's there problem.

Want to dent uniteds title chances? Let's to them at the toilet.

Exactly right. I fucking hate the Mancs & Bitters but I still am wanting the Mancs & Everton to beat Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Spurs because it all helps us. Fucking hope against all hope that they lose to WBA, Norwich etc but if I was offered a Champions League place in exchange for the Mancs winning #20 I'd bite your hand off.

How can anyone want Chelsea to beat Man United?!

We support LFC. We need top four.

People realise that if we get top four we will be creating one hell of team this summer. These owners will not be messing about if we get Champions League.

Who cares what United do this season, if we get Champions League, we'll be the ones challenging them next season.

Plus, I nearly hate Chelsea as much as United. But let's just focus on what's better for Liverpool please.

If you're going to use a sporting cliche at least use one that makes sense! Chelsea have 'pole position'. We have 'a few tricks up our sleeve' at best.

In all seriousness, anyone can see that Newcastle are not going to finish above Chelsea and Arsenal. Cabaye misses another two games, Steven Taylor is out for the season and Cisse is a new signing they can't count on yet. They have yet to play Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea away and Man City at home on the penultimate weekend. Therefore, not a cat in hell's chance of 4th with their squad.

As for us? Slim chance.

Pretty much this. I will always cheer for the team that will benefit Liverpool, I don't fucking care if the mancs have to get their 20th title for us to finish 4th. Give me that and I'll thank you and kiss your feet.

well if we're being hyper-analytical you could postulate that he actually said that we are on the back straight for 4th, not the back straight for the entire race right up until may

so maybe he sees us as needing to do a short spurt to cement ourselves comfortably in the 4th spot followed by a leisurely canter, meandering through the twists and turns that follow the metaphorical back straight of actually securing that particular perch

but then I supposed he ruined it with the thing about the last dash to the line  :(

Agree a draw is the best result, helps us get two points up on CSKA London and the Mancs most likely two points behind the blue mancs.

It is very possible to want our near rivals to lose without hoping for our historic rivals to win.

Well actually it's the home straight which shouldn't have twist and turns. There can be twists and turns after the back straight. In a 400m race you'll only get one turn. It in a GP you can have plenty of twists and turns.

a draw between Chelsea and the scum would be acceptable as I dont want Chelsea to get too far ahead and the scum really don't deserve to get anywhere near the title this year with the shit they've pulled.

we still need to go to the old outhouse next week but we've also got the Chelsea at home at the end of the season. lets smash em both eh?

come on u redmen!!!!!
