I really can't see us getting fourth, to be honest.  We have some good hoofball players, nobody can argue with that. However, none of our average players can actually play football.  Henderson can't pass, Downing is terrible, and Gerrard is poor nowadays.

As for the Carling Cup?  I can't believe anyone would actually believe we can beat  superior City side with Silva in the lineup  ;D

To the original post, we CAN get 4th but I don't think we WILL.

Before the season started I would have settled for challenging for a CL place. To get up there and give a sustained challenge for a top4 place would have been something we hadn't done for 2 seasons. To think we would walk back into the top4 after 1 summer of investment was unrealistic in my opinion.

In fairness I think we are falling a bit short of my expectations. And that is with Arsenal and Chelsea under achieving massively compared to previous seasons. We'll need a relatively big upturn in results to claw back 6 points on Chelsea. In all honesty we'll need a big improvement just to get within striking distance come the last month or 2 of the season.

Winning a cup will definitely soften the blow of our league form. Liverpool has always been about winning trophies and putting another trophy in the cabinet is not to be sniffed at. However, long term we need to be breaking into that top 4 and staying there. Without top4 investment, in all unlikelihood, will dry up and we'll have missed a massive opportunity to re-establish ourselves in that top bracket. Particularly with other top teams going through transition periods also.

We can get 4th but i dont think we will. Weve played what 22 games now? And its been the same story all season we simply cant put the ball in the net and kill off the lesser teams in the league. Also what looks like a very quiet jan transfer window for us i cant see much changing either, the only hope is that we havent really seen Suarez and Gerrard play together and we might start turning them draws at home into wins.

Lawro (blubber git) was saying today that if you have to choose between the League cup and CL qualification it's the CL every time.  I'm going to put my neck on the block and say no.  Even if we get fourth I'm not convinced the squad could make it past the qualifying rounds.  Even if we did - and I know the group stages are worth a good £12m, even if we don't get past them - I don't think we need CL football next season to sustain investment in the squad or attract the right players, as blubber git does. 

We need further squad and confidence building so this season I'll take the trophy thank you.

Carling Cup or CL qualification? CL every day of the week and twice on Sunday. That's not to say I wouldn't love to lift the cup but I think being in the Champions League would allow us in the summer to attract better players, we would be well of financially and who doesn't want to see CL football back at Anfield again?

I think you guys are right. Has been some time since we picked up any silverware. Young player's knowing what it takes to win a trophy is priceless experience.

Yes.
Financially it's more important to reach the CL, but for the players and staff I think a trophy is to prefer. We need to create a winning mentality and it kind of helps if we win something. The League Cup is a good place to start.

Clearly cl qualification would be a major step in the Club's rehabilitation and would lead to an improved squad.

 Cc would be great to win and good to install a winning mentality but the players will know themselves that the place to be is the European cup over and above the short term thrill of the minor domestic cup.

What hurts me is that liverpool after so many years of nothingness is still aiming at the lower step. But anyway IF we improve and lady luck turns it's back on the others to face us we, probably can.

Anyway before the lucas and suarez blows we were shooting at goal like crazy but just didn't bang them in, we just need to rediscover that and lady luck to put some of her spice.
