petition site now updated...

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/19149

This e-petition has received the following response:
This e-petition has now passed the threshold of 100 000 signatures.

The Leader of the House of Commons has written to the Backbench Business Committee, who are responsible for the scheduling of debates on e-petitions, informing them that the petition has reached 100 000 signatures

The Backbench Business Committee meets weekly to hear representations from MPs for debates in backbench time. The Committee can consider any subject for debate, including those raised in e-petitions, but an MP must make the case for their consideration. More information about the Committee is available on its website http://www.parliament.uk/bbcom

Since the petition was brought to the attention of the Attorney General, he has agreed that he will look at the applications made to his predecessor, to determine whether in his view, the evidence available supports an application to the Court for a new inquest.

Sent emial to my MP finished it off with the following paragraph.

the inner workings of government are beyond me and lord knows there are plenty of other huge issues MPs have to deal with on a daily basis, but as a father, I feel it my duty to support Anne. I hope you, as my elected representative, can also do something to help her find the truth.
I look forward to your support for Anne's inquest. If you feel you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
If you feel you are unable to offer Anne the support she needs to gain a debate in Parliament, I would appreciate a prompt reply outlining the reason why you cannot support this request.

Try and get them to respond, rather than just send the “ thank you  we will be in touch”

I sent this message to Stephen Twigg my MP today.

Dear Mr Twigg

I am writing this to you as my Member of Parliament in the hope that it will help result in what I and many others, as Liverpool fans, have been fighting to achieve for 23 long years - Justice for Kevin Williams and the 95 other Liverpool fans who lost their lives so needlessly at Hillsborough in 1989.

As you may be aware, a petition, initiated Kevin's mother Anne Willaims, was signed by well over 100,000 members of the general public calling on Parliament to debate the coronor's verdict on the death of Kevin and in particular the decision to impose an arbitary cut-off time of 3:15.

I implore you to use all your power and influence as a Liverpool MP to get this matter debated in Parliament and also to get Mrs. Williams the new inquest she so desires.

Yours faithfully

I now know why I didn't get an e-mail reply, just received a letter from my MP himself saying the following:

Thanks for your e-mail about the e-petition about Kevin Williams and his mother's request for a renewed inquest into his death.

I realise that this is a matter of great concern to many people, in addition to the family itself, and it is understandable that Kevin's mother should want to clarify about the way her son died. Clearly there has been a great reassessment of the events at Hillsborough in the intervening years and it doesn't seem unreasonable that those original inquests might be reopened in the light of the matters that have since come to light.

Whether or not the best way to achieve this is a debate in Parliament or some other action, I don't know, but I hope the petition will be responded to in a way that is satisfactory for Anne Williams.

Thanks for flagging up this issue for me. I'll do my best to keep you informed about what I'm doing in Nottingham and Parliament, so I hope you don't mind my keeping your details to hand. Please let me know if you'd rather I didn't do this.

Best wishes

Chris Leslie MP
MP for Nottingham East'

Not bad. Was a bit 'wtf' when I saw a letter with 'House of Commons' on the front. I may write back soon to let him know that I'll be keeping an eye on his actions and appraising his involvement.

Emailed our local MP Eric Ollerenshaw. I don't know his position on the matter, but I thought it couldn't hurt to let him know mine.

Quote
I am writing to you to urge you to support Mrs Anne William's request for an official inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of her son, Kevin, at the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989 (as per the following ePetition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/19149).

As I am sure you will agree, over 22 years is too long for Kevin's family to have had to wait for the precise details of his death to be properly examined and all evidence relating to the case to be considered.

I would request that you do all you can to ensure that Mrs Williams' petition gets a debate in Parliament so that the plight of Kevin Williams, one of the most tragic and shamefully ignored injustices of one of Britain's worst post-war tragedies, can finally be laid to rest.

Received this from my Local MP and replied.

Thank you for your email regarding petition 19149 and the campaign for this to be debated in the House of Commons. I have checked the records to see what stage the petition has reached and what further is required for it to be debated in the House of Commons. Now that the petition has reached 100,000 signatures it will be referred to the Backbench Business Committee. This is a committee of MPs who decide which petitions are debated and when. As far as I can tell, a decision has not been made about whether it will be debated.

You may already be aware that a petition asking for the official Cabinet papers containing minutes of meetings about the Hillsborough disaster was debated in the House of Commons. One of the Liverpool MPs, Steve Rotheram, spoke very movingly about the importance of these papers to everyone involved. The full debate is available through this link http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201011/cmhansrd/cm111017/debtext/111017-0002.htm#11101715000160.

As far as the campaign by Mrs. Williams to get an inquest for her son, I understand that the Attorney General has agreed to consider an application, although I do not know how long this is likely to take. It may be it is felt that a Parliamentary debate is not appropriate while this is being considered or that the Attorney General makes a decision before a debate can be held.

I am very sympathetic with this campaign and will support a debate in the House of Commons. I will let you know if and when the petition is debated and send you an update of any developments.

Yours sincerely
Madeleine Moon MP

Got a very nice letter from Maria Eagle regarding this.  Replicated below;

Thank you for your email about Mrs Anne Williams and her campaign in relation to her son who died at Hillsborough.

I understand that Anne's MP has applied for a debate in relation to the petition, a move I certainly support.

As you may know, I have been heavily involved in campaigning about the Hillsborough disaster since I was first elected. I therefore completely understand the deep sense of injustice felt by the families of those who died, particularly in relation to how the inquests were handled.

So you may rest assured that I will continue to do all I can to support Anne and all the other families in their justifiable quest for a proper sense of closure on the tragic losses they endured.

Yours sincerely

Maria Eagle MP.

Excellent from Mrs. Eagle. She certainly is on our side.

Just put this on Facebook.

...................................

Kevin Williams died at Hillsborough, one of 96. His mum, Anne, raised a petition to have a debate in the Commons on the reasons why her son died. The petition reached well over 100,000 signatures and should trigger the debate. Anne has been told that there are no slots to hold the debate and so is now petitioning MPs.  In the meantime Labour MP Kate Green calls for a debate on dignity at work after being told a beer called Top Totty is on sale in the Commons bar.
Ms Green was left 'disturbed' after seeing the ale's pump plate on the bar.

I can only imagine how Anne Williams feels.

JUSTICE FOR THE 96.

...................

Feel free to copy.

Shame them into action if necessary.

Done.
I've always supported the club not the individual. I'd like to see the club back where I most fondly remember it, at the top. That means there's no place for Carragher or anyone else who is past their sell by date.

Got a very nice letter from Maria Eagle regarding this.  Replicated below;

Excellent from Mrs. Eagle. She certainly is on our side.

Was in the middle of writing to Maria when I saw your post.

Changed it to thank her for the support and to remind her that other MPs might not be aware of the campaign and can she continue with her endorsement?

Her, Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham are certainly on side. As is right.

When I was living in East Midlands I wrote to former Lincoln MP Gillian Merron (Lab) regarding the Hillsborough pamphlets and got a terse reply from an aide saying it was nothing to do with her. Maybe her attitude is one of the reasons she is a former MP. Douglas Hogg (Con) didnt even reply.
