Liverpool v Roma at Fenway Park on July 25.
« on: January 17, 2012, 01:26:58 AM »
Organizers are planning a Liverpool FC-AS Roma exhibition soccer game at Fenway Park this summer, according to multiple sources involved with the negotiations.

The match would be part of US tours for both teams, the first since controlling interest in the clubs was purchased by Boston-based investors. Liverpool, founded in 1891, was purchased in 2010 by Fenway Sports Group, headed by Red Sox owner John Henry (NBA star LeBron James is also an investor). AS Roma, founded in 1927, was taken over last year by a group which includes Red Sox minority owner Thomas DiBenedetto and Celtics owner James Pallotta.

The game would be part of a tournament involving Chelsea FC and, possibly, Celtic FC. Matches will also be held in Chicago (Comiskey Park or Wrigley Field) and New York (Yankee Stadium.

Dates have not been set. Liverpool has tentatively made reservations to be in the Boston area from June 20 through July 4.

May look into going over there for those couple of weeks as seems will play in a few decent places.
Watch out, I'm and FSG mole. No really I am - they planned my existence on here over a year before they bought the club.

Our first friendly in Asia last year was July 13th. Doubt we'll be starting that early, unless organisers are happy to have a team of kids out.

Great news and good idea by the owners. The Red Sox route could be the route to becoming the biggest "soccer" team in USA.

New York, Chicago, Boston rumored so far. I'm game for Chicago. We should get a meet up at all the locations.

If I can get the money together I'd be damn tempted to go over and follow the team throughout the games. Family in Boston so that helps!
Sounds like a great friendly already.

In New York, so I'd go to both the Boston and NYC games. Having been to Anfield 5 times this season (4 matches, 1 for the tour) I can't wait for the team to visit our grounds and give them a proper welcome like Anfield did to me.
Games I've been to: 2011/2012 - Wolves (h), Man Utd (h), QPR (h), Villa (a), Wigan (a), Newcastle (h), Man City (a)
2012/2013 - Spurs (Friendly), Norwich (h)
Not bad for an American eh?

I wholeheartedly suggest that everyone with the means fly over here to see the Fenway match. It's a truly special park (I've been going there since I was a toddler) and is the closest thing we've got to Anfield in the US (it's been there since 1912). Plus, we've got a bunch of LFC bars!

Ironically I'll likely be living in Europe when this happens, and with nowhere near enough money to fly home. Goddammit.
You know what, I'm writing this here now and I'm going to put it in my signature and leave it there for the next 5 years, no matter how embarrassing it might or might not turn out to be: Jordan Henderson is going to be a fantastic player.

Only those three cities?  Damn, I'm going to have to start petitioning the Sounders to bring LFC out to Seattle.  I mean, if they can bring in the Mancs, Plastics, and Barça, they should certainly bring the Reds to the best place for soccer in the U.S.!

Hmm, Yankee Stadium would be very interesting. Would have to do that and Fenway, even though those awful Fenway seats make me homicidal.

And Nick Danger(backwards), I read somewhere and I can't remember where, but they said we would do some sort of training on the west coast of the country.

This is the first I've heard of it specific details and I'm part of the 11th street crowd. I'll have to see what everyone else's plans are at the bar when I can get back there in a week's time (came back from England a few weeks ago, spending some time at home before going back to NYC this weekend).

You'd assume they'd need at least a day or two to get the stadium ready, so the most logical time would seem to be around the MLB All-Star Break, with no game at Fenway between the 8th and the 16th of July. There's also a window between the 22nd and the 30th.

Sounds great! What players would play? Lucas,Suarez,Coates,Adam, Enrique, Carra, Skrtel,Maxi? That's a pretty good set of players going even if players have to go Euro's but I'd imagine we'd try and avoid that.

Thought that myself. Roma, Liverpool and given the Irish/Catholic links, Celtic all make perfect sense. But why those classless plastic no marks? Surely, they'd be able to get one of the big Italian or Spanish clubs for example.

My thinking straightaway was that Roma and us both have new American ownership, and I think even one of the partners of FSG or the group that bought Roma had an interest in both and subsequently had to sell his share in us (to LeBron James?) - am I correct or have I added together lots of tidbits?

Seems better to tour the States than Asia with a big tournament this summer though.

No that's right, as reiterated in the article ;)

Liverpool, Roma, Celtic and....well, anyone else of decent European pedigree would suffice either from Spain, Germany, another Italian club even. Just not Chelsea.
