Given his wages and given he is club captain I would be annoyed if he came back from the Euros injured. On his day and if played correctly then he can be one of our most important and influential players. The other players look up to him and he's a talisman to the fans.

So for that point he has to come back fit and uninjured. Especially at this difficult time when the new manager is going to have a hard enough job as it is. A crocked again-missing half the season again Gerrard won't be good for anyone.
Your dislike of the England National team is the basis for that view more than anything else in my opinion.  Would you honestly be saying the same if it was any other nationality?

Steven Gerrard is the ultimate professional, a very loyal footballer who loves the game and loves Liverpool, whatever you think of England you can't hold him loving playing for them as well against him.

It's not just a view though, it's history. It had happened before. But all players love to play for their countries, some going to extremes to ensure that country takes precedent over club (*ahem* Judas *ahem*). Gerrard hasn't done that, he tries to do both. But he needs to realize that he's not 25 anymore and needs to hang his international boots.

It's up to him when he does it, some footballers retire from club and international football at the same time.

Michael Owen is dickhead who couldn't lick Gerrard's boots, as a footballer or as a person.

True but Andy, like myself and some others, don't want anything to get in the way of what benefits the club and that includes the England national team.
"My coach told me to warm up just before the break. He told me I was going to take care of Kaka. I didn't think it was possible to turn things around but in the dressing room at halftime Rafa Benitez was calm - "We are Liverpool FC, we have so many fans, we are not going to be slaughtered. If we can score a goal quickly we push on from there.""

That's fine,  but holding it against Gerrard that he doesn't agree with you is a different kettle of fish surely?

Let's be honest. Andy doesn't care about the reasons really. He just doesn't like Gerrard. That is obvious, beyond a doubt. The "caring for the club" is a big stick he hides behind and uses to beat Gerrard with.

I don't think he's said much wrong there. I'll be annoyed if he comes back injured as well. Moreso than most other players because he's had injury problems in recent years anyway and anything that can be done to minimise those should be and that includes international games. Obviously he wants to play for his country at a major international tournament and that's fair enough but it's still annoying for me as a Liverpool supporter.

For my 2 cents worth (as a fan who started going to anfield when the front two were Toshack and Keegan), I think Kuyt has contributed a lot more to Liverpool's cause over the past 5 years than Gerrard.

The sheer number of posts you have on this topic shows you are not impartial at all - or at least not partial in the right way. Your criticisms are nagging and ridiculous. You even admitted that you still hold it against Gerrard that he even contemplated moving to Chelsea. When it comes to this subject you're just not credible in my eyes and I am sure others.

Seriously? You are going to criticise him for that goal........biscuit and taking

Are you deliberately trolling or is it entirely incidental?

I think you mean accidental and no I'm not trolling its not something I have any interest in. I love the goal in fact if you really pressed me I think it might be my favourite of all time. But you can't deny he was totally out of the game standing there and he was very lucky the ball even dropped to him at all.

Just goes to show the lack of intelligence that has been evident in his game since his breakthrough, if he was a smarter footballer he would have controlled it and pass it to a teammate nearby. instead he whacks it in hope ey, typical Englishman.

So having retrieved the ball in midfield from a clearance and laid it off to rise who takes a touch and crosses it, where should he be? Following up for the second ball should it be cleared as we had several players in the box and cisse on the edge of the box? Seems to me there was not much more he could have done...unless you think that as opposed to laying it off he should have gone on a run with the ball and took responsibility for beating west ham on his own......with cramp....in the 90th minute of a cup final?

More and more ridiculous......

Steven Gerrard to play on for England after European Championship
• Captain hopes for international future under Hodgson
• 'I don't think I have a decision to make, I love England'

Steven Gerrard has no intention of retiring as an England player after this summer's European Championship.

The 31-year-old will captain England in Poland and Ukraine with some suggesting it could be his last major tournament for his country.

Gerrard, though, would like to continue until the next World Cup in Brazil after denying that he was set to focus on leading Liverpool after an injury-plagued season.

"I can understand that at my age people are going to start questioning me and asking me if I'm going to quit England and focus on Liverpool, but I don't see it like that," he told the Daily Mirror.

"I don't think I have a decision to make. I love playing for England, I love playing for Liverpool."

The midfielder admits that the new England coach, Roy Hodgson, will have the final say in whether he stays on, but after claiming he is fit and strong again, he is determined to prove his worth.

"I think it's going to be a case of let's see how I perform in this tournament," he said.

"Let's see if first and foremost I have a future with this manager if he's keen for me to stay about.

"If the manager says to me at the start of next season that he thinks I did well in the tournament, that he wants me to stick about, that he can protect me, not overuse me and that I have a big part to play, I'm sure I will carry on.

"If the England manager says to me that he wants me to stay around for Brazil, that would be a nice carrot on the end of the string for me.

"That would be a good tournament for me to bow out at, but there are a lot of things to consider.
"The way I look at it at the moment is my body is in the best shape it's been in for many years. My groin problems are all behind me and I feel strong."

At the risk of getting twatted by others, let me just say that I share your exact views on Gerrard. I want him to play well every single game beacuse he is a world beater on his day. But he can be inconsistent and frustrating. I also share your views on his leadership among other things. People often misunderstand when you say something against him but its actually nothing personal, we want what is best for LFC.

It's not the playing, its the getting injured at international meetups. Maybe were more sensitive to this worry given how he, Agger and Torres have limped back in the past. Gerrard playing sparingly and doing well for England is argue is good for us as a club. Dare I say how RVP, Rooney, Beckham, Xavi etc do at international tournaments improves their clubs standing in markets where players are supported not teams per se.

I guess you wouldn't mind if FA pay for your medical bills and your wages Stevie first time you crock yourself playing for their useless team (and you will)? They'd probably do it for you, seeing how they love Liverpool as we've learned this year.

Ahh, the past. Land of cetainties...matches at 3pm on Saturdays.....the boys pen.... 50p to stand in the Kop. Players trying to stay on their feet, the league trophy parade around Anfield every May. Queueing to get in on the last day of the season, football shirts with no sponsorship, a pint in the Lothian before getting the 27 to the game. Who is this Dalglish feller?, we'll miss Keegan. A 25 yard thunderbolt from Jimmy Case. Paul Breitner telling the German media the hard work was done, it'll be easy in Munich.....Sammy Lee marking him out of the game. Another final. All the crowd shouting Barney, Barney and laughing when he mis-controls the ball. The first season ticket (not in my own name of course...some company in Rose Lane). Quite misty-eyed now......

One can be perfectly logical and place criticism where it's due. As I said though, the sheer amount of posts you have criticising Gerrard and some of the criticisms themselves show you have something against the guy. It's not for the benefit of seeing the club succeed, that's just something you hide behind. Just do yourself a favour and look at all your posts in this thread. If it doesn't strike you as odd then I guess you can't help it.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Anyone who says Gerrard playing this year was the reason we were losing is high or was watching the wrong matches. There are fewer games these days where he is our stand-out best. But there are no games when he is our stand-out worst. He's always in the top 4 of players on the pitch for us, if not overall.

You're trying to mix correlation with causation and anyone with even the most basic grasp of statistics would laugh at your use. People want the club to step forward yet want to scapegoat Gerrard. If others cant meet his standard they need to harden the fuck up or piss off. It's that simple. Just because Gerrard can no longer carry the load of mediocrity in the team and is merely a "good" player now, instead of Superman, doesn't excuse the seasons the likes of Downing, Carroll, Henderson, Enrique, Reina and even Spearing have had. Gerrard is not above criticism either, but when you are going down the line assorting blame he is one of the last players you need to dress down.

Gerard is our best player when he's on the pitch but he does fuck up the balance. He wants to do everything. He drops deep and demands the ball off the centre backs, then he comes forward and wastes the balls a lot more than he used to along with his shooting boots going a miss more and more frequently.

The stats can lie but I'm Gerard's case I don't think they do. Last year he did not have a clearly defined role in the team and it showed with the points we accumulated with him starting. Is that his fault or Kennys? I'm still of the belief, give Gerard to united or Madrid and he will play less but give more. Hopefully our next manager will have a better system which will make use of gerrards ability.

Gerrard affects the balance of the team when in centre midfield.  But against Norwich for example, the balance of the team was great as he had a free role and stayed high to support Suarez (unlike against Chelsea in the final).

We need a CM that Gerrard trusts to control the game and give him (and Suarez) enough possession to win us games.  This will stop him dropping deep and isolating Suarez.  He trusted Alonso / Mascherano to do that.

Lucas coming back will obviously help.

And damned denial......apart from say 3 matches this season, his performances have ranged from average to shocking.
I can't remember my standard deviations any more, or my means or distributions, but there's truth in those figures for those who have open eyes.

The two things are mutually irrelevant.

What I do or do not think of Gerrard is totally irrelevant. What do you care if I don't like him or not?

However. I have always said that on his day, when playing in the right position, when uninjured, fit and when on form and playing for the team - he's a benefit to the club. And I'm always happy when he is uninjured, fit, on form, playing for the team in the right position because that means that the team and club is benefitting.
Football has reached the ninth gate of farce and pathetic, unbelievable trite nonsense. It's supposed to be a game and it's turned into pantomime, hype, quilts and bellends.
