Good result but......................

Andy Carroll has seiously got to watch a video of how Suarez chases defenders down!!!  Really winding me up the way he just seems to jog about when the opposition has the ball in defense!  Its all about pressure and i'm sure he's fit enough to sprint towards the ball for 20-30 seconds at at time ( or at least i hope he is!! ) he should be doing it!!

Other than that we cant play any worse in the second leg and i'm sure we wont lose!!

Wembley here we come??
Carroll isn't Suarez. He worked hard enough tonight considering he was just up there as a sacrificial lamb. I think he was left on to defend set pieces.

Torres wouldn't have got back and defended either, when he's not scoring goals he's not doing anything.

While I agree that Carroll was involved and energetic, and that he won his battle with Slavic, and that he managed a nice few touches and passes, it will also be fair to say that at times he did lose the ball, he did miscontrol it and he did struggle with higher balls to his feet.
A marked improvement and a genuine shift, but a killer edge would be nice.

Good win.
Great display first half.... second half was job done.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a 1-0 away win has any away goal value.

There's no away goal rule in the Carling cup anyway I think.

edit: nevermind i'm wrong

City just don't know what to do when a team sits back, defends and leaves no gaps or spaces in behind, I still think we'll need another goal in this tie if we want to go to Wembley though, just a feeling

they know what to do with silva opening them up and ya ya driving through midfield.

shame all the talk tomorrow will be about johnson's two footed tackle and how it was much worse than kompany's blah blah blah

I didn't think there was much between them.  In my opinion Kompany's wasn't a red nor was Glen's, but there's no consistency so I can sort of understand the whole 'Johnson should of walked' thing.  That said, Johnson was absolutely immense tonight (can't defend my arse) and it would of been a crying shame if he got sent off.   We were due a few decisions in our favour anyway.

bellamy and maxi will be key players in the second leg as city will give us chances on the counter

Maxi? Since when has he become a key player? Unless playing with his car keys in the VIP lounge counts.

I am disappointed, but not surprised that people are scapegoating Carroll.

He had one and a half chances in the match, first was well saved by Hart and the second he got his head on one that was behind him and was just wide.  He did his bit defending, getting back when we needed him.  At times he was in there half on his own and was the only Liverpool player outside our own box.

and as for those who witter on about carroll struggling - may i remind them (or inform them, since many of them have yet to grow whiskers) how long it took for Toshack to click. just saying.....

From The Beeb -

2211: We could talk about this all night. But I think the point is that it doesn't matter whether Glen Johnson got the ball or not, it is that a two-footed challenge equals a red card. I don't think anyone is going to dispute that he went in two footed, or are they?

I would love for somebody at the BBC to show me where it states this in the laws of the game?

It doesn't, but it was closer to a reckless and endangering tackle than Kompany's was.  Not that I thought either of them were fouls.

I know they're two different players but my point is that they are both fit enough to chase down the ball when the opposition has it!! Carroll rarely seems to do that, it would seriouslt add to his game, and ours!

As for Johnsons tackle it looked to me that he was to the side of the city player not going through him, hence the city player didnt need to "dodge, jump" out of the way.

Astounding! Absolutely astounding! Not since we went top- with "boos"- have I seen such ungratefullness!
You ought to be a-shamed!

Anyway- Proper away cup-game. I said earlier that tonight we'll have a glimpse of our European tactics and how effective they can be and I was not dissapointed. We beat the most expensive team in the league- and the league-leaders- on their own turf and restricted them from scoring for the first time in donkey's years. Makes me much, much more confy of facing Real/Barca away.

Roll on game2!

It was a hopeless task for Carroll in the second half. Just why we kept him on is difficult to understand.
because if you clear the ball in his direction he has the potential to hold it and relieve pressure on the defence.
because if they're piling a free kick into the box he can generally win an aerial duel and thus relieve the pressure onthe defence.
