Lisandro Lopez is a far better option and since Lyon are not the power house they used to be in terms of money I think Lisandro is very affordable.

However i have to agree, if you compare Gomis to what Drogba brought to that Chelsea team they played very much on the counter with pace and penetration in Duff, Robben and Cole at the time on the break, something we don't have the luxury of at this moment.

Yeah, which would make sense if we're looking at Sinclair and Hoilett. Hopefully with someone like Gomis in the team, we'll play more similarly to how we were playing towards the end of last season with the pass and move set up as I've seen from the very few posts on here that Gomis can play and would prefer the ball at his feet. It's apparent Suarez can't lead the line for us as he's not that kind of player but with Gomis who you would imagine would be a more polished version of Andy Carroll that we all envisaged, leading the line, holding the ball up and inviting players to bomb forward and move around, then that's the kind of vision Kenny has for us. That said, with someone like him in the team we always seem to go to plan B which is lump it forward when we're running out of patience.

I don't know much about him at all to comment, but I'd assume he is a much more "raw" version of Drogba and can only speculate as to what our play would be like if he were in the team.

I'd suggest he's only as raw as Didier was when he first arrived at Chelsea, whether he has that capacity to grow into the player Drogba has is entirely another question (which would be pure speculation)

posted in the general thread but without going too off track our two best "wingers" to date have been Bellamy and maxi, Bellamy cant play more than one game a week and maxi is rumoured to be leaving by the end of the season you'd like to think we're loooking at long term players for those positions and  now you've mention players that have been linked with us in the past week or so and when you put the pieces of jigsaw together you can see a formation forming which suits suarez and gomis

I reckon that could be the clubs long term transfer strategy, but realistically i find it difficult to see an overhaul of players in this window. The summer window would be more likely for 2 players out and 3 in, IMO - in those positions.

Not sure the Gomis rumours are true anyway.

Someone just overheard Kenny talking about Andy Carroll and saying how he wanted someone who wouldn't go miss.

I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

Everyone loves a good bit of gossip...irrespective of player quality.

I actually didnt know that he was 26..I thought he was about 22-23, which would somewhat excuse the things that he struggles with. But at 26? yes there are examples of others who found their flow at that age but few and far between.

I'll be honest I've rarely seen him play, so I have no opinion really, just hope he can put the ball in the net. Whats he like with the ball at his feet? Good touch, quick passing etc?

A bit of an enigma, can be a deft on the ball as a ballerina - and at other times be clumping the ball in clogs. Has good pace and mobility for a big guy, hence the reason he is likened to Drogba when he first arrived at Chelsea, a bit hit and miss, but a big presence on the pitch.

Can't say I agree with that to be honest. Obviously Gomis is somewhat talented but Drogba at the time of joining Chelsea was banging them in for fun in France. Him and Cisse were head and shoulders above everyone else, and I still remember the marseille games against us and then Celtic I think when he just demolished our defence.

From what I have seen and do know (although I don't have a broad knowledge of that league) Gomis hasn't been anywhere near that good. Perhaps that could change if he came these shores (providing he didn't fail a medical) but I just can't see this as a goer to be honest.

Think Heskey when we signed him...when there was optimism about where his career could go.

You look at him on some days and think he could dominate anyone. But those days dont come often enough and even though he will work hard, you'll still find yourself looking for forwards after signing him.

Fairy 'muff.

However both Drogba and Cisse were both risks as they'd only scored a reasonable amount before leaving their respective french clubs, 16ish goals?

Gomis has promised much and underdelivered since moving to Lyon, but he is very much in the Drogba mould at his similar age, whether he has the capability to take it to another level is up for debate.

Plus Drogba had the benefit of playing in a team that didnt need him to reach his full potential straight away. Takes a lot of pressure off you when the team you join never loses.

Hmmmm.

Surprised by this, i gotta admit. I personally wouldn't have him here. I think he's a decent player and all that, but beyond his St Etienne days i don't think he's done anything to suggest he is someone who will improve us greatly. I'd rather give it more time with Carroll to be honest. From what i've seen, he's now starts most games for Lyon alongside Lisandro Lopez. I'm guessing it would take around 15-20 million euro's to take him off Lyon's hands. I just don't see it being viable.

On the Drogba comparisons. I don't really see it myself. I think he's shown glimpses of Drogba-esque form over the years, in terms of occupying centre backs and using his pretty awesome physical attributes to bully people around. For the most part though, i think he's one of those that has all the physicality in the World but fails to apply it on a consistent basis. Kinda like Heskey. Heskey, no matter who the centre back was usually had the beating of them in terms of size, power, pace.... How often did he actually use it though? Not enough, that's for sure.

Funnily enough, Gomis kinda strikes me as the current Didier Drogba. You can tell Drogba is trying to capture some of that old magic, but he's lost that edge that made him so fucking scary for defences coming up against him. He's got the same physicality that he had 4-5 years ago, but he's lost something. Whether it's something mental or just age catching up with him i don't know, but it takes away what made him the best striker in the World for a wee while back in the mid noughties.

As i mentioned before, why not make it work with Carroll? Maybe it's the beginning of the end for him and this is his replacement, we just don't know until we know. But one things for sure, if Gomis is holding up an LFC scarf anytime soon then get your money on Carroll leaving sooner rather than later.

See, that video kinda sums up why i don't buy the Drogba comparisons. Out of all those goals, one is a header. Most of them are from some really smart dribbles and a great turn of pace on his part, rather than the aerial prowess associated with Drogba at his very best.

Kinda like Heskey. Heskey, no matter who the centre back was usually had the beating of them in terms of size, power, pace.... How often did he actually use it though? Not enough, that's for sure.

To be fair mate he scores far more often than Heskey. He usually hits double figures in the league, gets around 15 in all comps. He'll probably do the same again then this year. He just doesn't break beyond that. Far more reliable for goals than Heskey, just hasn't seem to break through to the next level.

I've only seen him a couple of times but Olivier Giroud looks the most interesting striker in France (especially with Gameiro out of the picture). He looks like the player Andy Carroll should be, but more elegant.

Heskey at Liverpool wasn't bad in terms of goal return, no? Certainly for the first few years. It's just that frustrating thing of seeing a guy who has everything it takes to be an absolute monster e.g Drogba, but just can't seem to take that leap.

I think Gomis comes a hell of a lot deeper than Drogba ever did. Drogba was always that stereotypical 'lead the line' type striker to me. Haven't seen Lyon much this season, who is usually the deeper out of Gomis and LL? I know Lisandro likes to come deep himself, so maybe Gomis is indeed playing closer to goal and getting more 'poachers' goals than he did before.

Giroud - Still makes me fucking sick. Celtic were linked with him for a couple of million back when he played for Tours (?) in Ligue 2. 'Course, it didn't happen and he's gone on to become a really good striker. Only reservation i have with him is - maybe he's just doing an Andre Pierre Gignac when he was at Tolouse.
You change all the lead, sleeping in my head, as the day grows dim, I hear you sing a golden hymn.

this isn't going to happen, not even close to happening and will not happen. He is going to leave a champions league team that drew a team from cyprus  for the round of 16? they are basically in the last 8, with a damn good team. Not Happening.

This shite is fuckin sickening already! Since when 2/4 more CL games have become career deciders? If someone is going to reject a move to Liverpool coz he wants to play a few more CL games for an average team like Lyon then they can fuck right off. In fact, if they even have the slightest of doubts about that, they can fuck right off!

Well, if you think about its mid season actually and people have ambitions and targets set for each season. Changing club mid-season is usually only for people who have a move in mind are unsettled or arent working out at the current club. So the point by the previous poster is right, although money can change a lot of minds.

However i have to agree, if you compare Gomis to what Drogba brought to that Chelsea team they played very much on the counter with pace and penetration in Duff, Robben and Cole at the time on the break, something we don't have the luxury of at this moment.

If we want penetration we should get penis and not Gomis

I'm sure there's lots of transfers to dispute law, Suarez for starters
Prandelli: "I prefer to concede a goal on the counter-attack rather than sit, wait and suffer for 20 minutes."
