fake AVG virus?
« on: December 19, 2011, 04:32:15 PM »
Hello All

is anyone else getting multiple pop ups from AVG risk detector recently? I run the scan every day which is clean but over the past few days whenever i am on my computer a popup will appear saying a number of threats have been detected and to heal/remove these - have i been hacked or is this a bogus thing?

Take a screenshot of the message when it pops up? Might help.

Uninstall it, surely wouldnt pop up then...unless it is a virus or such

I dont like AVG, i use Avast antivirus and Malware-bytes anti malware both free to download. Run a scan and see what it picks up

I suggest you stop using AVG, virus or not.

I think it just shows you that it is working.....I have it now and again but it is the same box that shows up when the nightly scan starts. Don't worry about it...

Came to this thread a bit late, but from what I've read, the real relationship trouble is not between you and your girl, but between you and a small box of Tampax. You obviously need something more substantial in your life like a huge Costco sized box of jam rags, seeing as you're such a massive fucking quim

AVG doesn't quarantine the files unless you tell it to, so it'll keep finding the same "infected" files over and over.

Open AVG, look in detail at each file and figure out whether it's something you want to keep.

Odds are, most of the infected files will be in your browser's cache or in some restore point directory, in which case you should just quarantine those because they probably are viruses and malware picked up while surfing.

AVG does give false positives, but it's rare.

Anyway, like an ex-girlfriend's cleavage, it's probably the last we'll see of these two tits.

Right I'm going to try and be brief with this but if any one can help me I'd appreciate it SOOO MUCH!! Even a nudge in the direction of another forum perhaps?

1. Windows Security Alerts (Opens every time I start up PC) says my Firewall is turned off. Won't let me turn it on at all. Q- I thought that was just a standard Windows firewall that I should be able to turn off & on?

2. I've run 'regedit' and deleted norton, avg & windows security essentials which had all buried themselves in. I did this so that I could start a fresh with Avast. (Currently doing a full system scan with that but after 20mins its not done much) Avast is up and running the Full scan, yet in the bottom corner next to the 'Windows Security Alerts' warning there it is saying 'Warning, your system is unsecured'. Click the fix now button & it says ''The following components could not be started; Mail Shield, IM Shield, P2P Shield, File System Shield, Web Shield, Network Shield etc etc...

Someone HELP me please this is just too frustrating.

the problem with AVG Free edition is just that.  They produce a free version that will flag up all kinds of stuff.   mostly things called false positives.     the paid version isnt much better

as the guy said above.  the best one for home is Microsoft Security essentials.  This is the home version of the Microsoft corporate Forefont Endpoint protection.

what makes this better you ask?

most AV out there use their own virus detecting "engines"  little programs that look after the scanning and updating of definitions etec.      Norton, kaspersky, Symantec & Avg all have their own engines.

What makes MSE different is this uses 8-10 different detecting engines at the same time.     most of the engines are the same ones that you pay for with other products above.   if it detects something.  its highlighted it through one of those engines.

think of it like this.    Microsoft want you to use their windows product. who else knows where the security vuneralbilities are better than the designers.   They purchased an AV company to develop FEP and MSE for this.

One small thing most small companies dont know either.   is if you have less then 10 pc's in your business.   you are perfectly able to download and install Security essentials onto the business pc's legally.    it just wont work on the Server products.  any more and you have to use Forefront.

be sure to always backup your pc often.  running system restores to take snapshots of the system state.   if you do have any problems you can roll back no problem.

agreed.   most problems of pc slow downs are caused by more than 1 AV program installed.

you may purchase a pc with norton internet security on it.  which is fine.  you then subscribe to virgin media or BT and install the disk that comes with it.    installing yet another security software.

the problem occurs when each AV or security program is attempting to scan the pc at the same time.   the hard drive is attempted to access different files and causes the slow down.  not only this.  one AV can detect that another program is attempting to change files and try to stop it.  the other program is the other AV.   so the 2 are basically fighting against themselves.

i had a client the other day with FOUR AV programs installed.   suffice to say his Core I5 was running like a bag of shi'ite.  couple of hours later.   MSE installed.  it flys along now.   ;D
