Absoutely. We need to be ultra-careful with him. A back-up DM should be top of our list for incoming transfers. I know people turned their noses up at the idea of Diame, but I think  that kind of signing would've have been good if we are on a budget - free transfer so relatively risk free, possibly be prepared to be a back-up but would get plenty of game time (certainly this season)..

I don't want to get into specific transfer targets on the main board and was just using that as an example (and since he's now gone to West Ham it's not a transfer discussion per se), but I think we certainly should be urgently looking to acquire a DM, whether it be a cheap back-up like Diame or a more long-term acquisition. I see this as our number 1 priority of this transfer window. I hope BR & the technical team looks at it this way too..

We should be looking for a player that is top draw and can play there week in week out.
Let him, Lucas and whoever else fight for their place in the team.

If you ask me Of course you will not) I would like to see Mario Mandjukic in LPC,  I like his style and personality. He participate in defense , and also score goals, I am sure he and Lucas could colaborate perfectly, furthermore :"super Mario" Mandjukic iz a squade player , not a primadona super ego.  He has a contract with Wolburg who does not want to release him.. so we will  contract some mediocre Englishan and pay  him too mutch. I would only be too happy to be proven wrong/

Not sure if we need a Mascherano type next to Lucas, mate.

I actually think Henderson would work very well next to Lucas. But I expect to see Gerrard there more often than not.

If anything we need decent cover for Lucas.

Reposted you over here as more relevant in his thread so hope you dont mind.

Our CM is soft, end of........... love Lucas to death and he does a fine fine job but he does not tear teams apart in a Souness like manner, much more subtle going about his duties. I hoestly think he could play one up on the holding position as he has an eye for a pass and in combo with another fighter our CM would add the metal to the center that has been missing. Give SG the platform of two to work off of keep Henderson in reserve as hes too young still to expect to lead in CM and we might challenge for 4th and more. Early morning dreams has me thinking like this

............Masch type
.........Lucas............SG
Suarez.......Carroll......Bellamy

Throw a possible world class striker addition in there and you may even end up with 2 in CM and SG going wide or further up

....Masch ....Lucas....

SG.....Suarez......Carroll or Bellamy plus world class striker/wide man

Hes young he has time plus he is more suited to the attcking CM role is he not so not a stretch to think a 22 year old is coming in now to eventually help / replace SG in a couple of years.

Agree with  this. We need to ease him back in carefully. Players that are brought back from serious knee injury too soon and too quickly can often suffer a reccurrence of the injury, or suffer some other injury becuse they are subconsciously compensating for the injured knee.

We need to buy another DM anyway as we do not have a good enough one in the squad other than Lucas and even if he was fully able to play straight away  then he certainly couldn't play every game in a fixture list that also includes the Uefa Cup games...

I'll not expect him to be match fit, both physically and mentally, at least until a couple of months into the season. So easing back is spot on.

As for re-occurance, the operation is a complete re-contruction of the cruciate. A piece of tendon is taken from somewhere else of the patient (or from a donor), "nailed" within the knee to replace the torn one.    One can certainly tear the "new" cruciate again, but the re-occurance would not be because of an old injury.

You are  wrong about him, and you will regret it when you see him and Jelavic as a tandem forward in Everton :'(  it is true that JUVE offers a considerably larger amount of money and CL playing , but it seems   the man wants to play in England for some reason..

I dont think there was that much sun in southern Brazil in the last couple of months. Temperature dropped below zero just two weeks ago in Porto Alegre.

An article in the site "Sambafoot"  speaking about Brazilians in EPL,  the article is called: "Brazilian footballers and the EPL: the good, the bad and the maybes"

Here is the comment about vLucas Leiva in this article:

A number of the current Selecao squad play their club football in England, with others being targeted by Premier League clubs. One of the most influential is Lucas Leiva, whose importance for club and country has increased in the last 18 months. The ex-Gremio midfielder was widely criticised when he first moved to Anfield, but his work-rate, range of passing and determination has won the Kop over, and forced his way into Mano Menezes’ starting line-up; Liverpool’s dip in form coincided with Lucas’ knee injury.

Here is the link for this article,  which  praises some players and doubting in others

If he can come back as strong as he was before his knee injury, he is a future captain for club and country. No doubt about it.

Liverpool Star Lucas Lends Support to T-Shirt Made in His Honour

LIVERPOOL, England, July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

A t-shirt designed in honour of Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva promptly sold out - after all the remaining stock was snapped up by the man himself.

Love Follow Conquer, a clothing label for Liverpool FC supporters, unveiled the £15 t-shirt on their website to widespread acclaim with reds from around the world quick to order and express their approval across social networks.

The reaction wasn't lost on Lucas with many Liverpool fans using his Twitter handle to reference the shirt, and the Brazilian was so impressed with the design he sent a direct message to Love Follow Conquer asking how he could get his hands on some - much to the amazement of brand owner and designer Ian Maloney.

"We couldn't believe it at first; we had to double-check it wasn't a Lucas impersonator!" Ian said.

"We quickly realised it was the 'real' Lucas and exchanged messages about how many he wanted and how to get them to him. We told him we only had half a dozen left in stock after the huge response we'd had and he said he'd take them all to give to his family.

"He was insistent on paying for them and sent us a cheque which we wouldn't dream of cashing; it's framed on the wall."
The t-shirt, and its subsequent reaction, emphasises a turnaround in popularity for a player who was much maligned in his early days at Anfield but has matured from a youngster in the shadows of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano into one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League.

Lucas' season was cruelly cut short in December 2011 with a long-term knee injury from which he - and to some extent Liverpool themselves - are still recovering from, but his absence has only served to reinforce the surging affection in which he is held by Liverpool supporters.

The Brazilian is due to return to training ahead of the new Premier League season, coinciding nicely with new stock of the in-demand t-shirt due in mid-August.

About Love Follow Conquer

Love Follow Conquer is a clothing label for Liverpool fans which draws its influences from a retrospective understanding of one of the most successful clubs in British history. From Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell to Kenny Dalglish and Emlyn Hughes, right up to Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, Liverpool has a truly distinct identity and heritage - celebrating this is what Love Follow Conquer is all about.

The Love Follow Conquer collection aims to offer something truly unique for LFC supporters; something exclusive and timeless with no corporate logos or sponsorship.

I feared knee injury had ended my career, says Liverpool midfielder Lucas

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER

PUBLISHED: 13:31 GMT, 4 July 2012 | UPDATED: 13:31 GMT, 4 July 2012

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva initially feared for his career after undergoing knee surgery but after months of rehabilitation he is looking to make a timely return to fitness.

The Brazil international missed more than half of last season following an operation to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in December after he was carried off in the Carling Cup fifth-round win at Chelsea.

Lucas has undergone an intensive programme to get him back on his feet, spending some of his time in his homeland working at former club Gremio.

But it has been a tough struggle for the 25-year-old dealing with his first serious injury.
He said: 'It has been very hard for me because I have never been out for a month so you can imagine five months when I can't play and only watch the games.

'I just had to cope with the injury and the time. As soon as you get the injury you know you will be out for many months and you start to think about other things.

'The most difficult period for me was when I was on crutches for two months, especially the first four weeks after the surgery when the knee was swollen.

'To be honest in a few moments I thought I couldn't come back any more or even walk because the way I looked at my knee I felt scared.

'But as soon as I started the rehab it is unbelievable how your body reacts.

'My main target now is to be 100 per cent recovered and be okay to play a part in next season.'
Lucas has now returned to Merseyside as the club today began pre-season training for all those players not involved in summer international duty, and has a much brighter outlook than he did in those initial days last winter.

'I don't have too many experiences with injuries because fortunately I had none in my time at Liverpool previously, so it has been a learning process for me as well and I am very happy with the progress,' he added.

'I think I am progressing very well in terms of the knee, strength and fitness-wise.

'I am working every week and trying to improve every week and the main target is to be fit for the new season, if not for the start then after a few weeks.

'And I think maybe this six to eight months I will add on at the end of my career.

'I am confident I will be back at the same level because I know how hard I am working.'

Having overcome initial fears about his long-term career prospects, the Brazilian, whose absence was sorely missed in the latter half of the campaign, now has to tackle other psychological issues as thoughts turn to a return to full training and playing.

'The first four weeks I saw my knee it was very bad looking and it comes through your head that you might not be at the same level you were before," he said.

'But at the same time you see big players who had the same injury come back and be even better.
'There is no need for me to be scared. Rather than stay protecting myself, I need to work on my head as well to come back and play the same way I was playing before.

'One of the things which made me strong in the team was how aggressive I was in tackles and things like that, so I cannot lose that.'
