Whats he achieved this year mate?  Haven't seen much athletics this year.  Be a travesty if Mark cavendish doesnt win it

Gold and Silver in the long distances at the World Championships, first Briton to do so.

To be fair, I don't pay much attention cycling; by all accounts, Cavendish seems to have had a great year too.
"My coach told me to warm up just before the break. He told me I was going to take care of Kaka. I didn't think it was possible to turn things around but in the dressing room at halftime Rafa Benitez was calm - "We are Liverpool FC, we have so many fans, we are not going to be slaughtered. If we can score a goal quickly we push on from there.""

Fair play to the fella, would have deserved it after doing that.

Cavendish smashed the cycling this year.  Won a load of tours in the tour de france then won the world championship in a quite brilliant sprint finish.

He won the world road race championship (making him world champion). The last time a Briton managed this was in 1965. Additionally, he won the green jersey at the Tour de France which has never been done by a Briton. Ever.

Basically his achievements are unprecedented in British cycling. british cycling is currently in the best shape it has ever been, Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton et al... Cavendish is the jewel in that crown.

Made up with the top 3, but it was back to front in my opinion. Mo Farah became a living legend of British running this year. Anyway, pleased for Mark Cavendish. I think the holders get enough reward in the huge amounts of money they earn, and the cricketers got a lot of recognition for their team effort, so I think the decision was a good one.

The girl who won the Young SPOTY (Lauren Taylor) plays at my golf club. Had no idea she was up for it until the nominations came on. Fair play to her, she's been very good for a long time but I wouldn't have thought she'd have won this. Well in.

It should be Cavendish but probably won't be. Cook has had a great year but England's success has been down to the team ethic so wouldn't have him or Strauss. Won't be Murray or Kahn. If it's a golfer I hope it's Clarke over Mcillroy just because it was such a great story. I always like to see athletes do well in this too, Mo Farrah will do pretty well I think.

Cavendish, Farrah, Clarke for me but very much doubt that will happen.

Not bad if I say so myself!...

Welled up with the Clarke and Farah features, I love the personal element to it all, great to watch.

Also, we lost some great sportsmen this year didn't we?

Finally, why was Annie Lennox doing the Haka?!

Ha. Not that into cycling then? Cavendish is anything but boring.
He's really massive over here in Belgium. Already won tons of awards, believe he got the Belgian equivalent of foreign SPOTY twice.
Enjoys the same status in France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, ...
Was the only name I knew between those nominees btw.

He's not trying to be funny or eccentric.  Or arrogant.  He just wins.  He is the best in the world at what he does.  If you think he's smug, you've not seen much of him.

Right - Cav deserved to win for several reasons, but above all because:

He is the best there has EVER been at his speciality.

None of the others can say that. And thats not to demean tham at all. Some great achievements form some great sportsmen.

Thats what I was thinking, they had a massive 2 hour long show, and basically announced the winner at the end and ended the program.

They could of at least given a long compliation of his year or the sporting year as a whole.

They could of at least given a long compliation of his year or the sporting year as a whole.

They focus on all the contenders during the show; Cavendish had a full montage and interview during the night. They've always done it this way.

Interestingly, the viewing figures for last night were about half of last year's show. Possible reasons, sports fans may have prefered watching a high-profile PL game on Sky, boycott due to no women on shortlist and it was on a Thursday night rather than the traditional Sunday slot. Think they'll go back to the Sunday for next year.

I started following cycling about 4 years ago when I took it up myself.Watched lots of old films and read up about it.Some real experts here in Belgium and the general opinion is that Cav is the best sprinter the world has ever seen and they love him here.Never runs away from the camera even if he has a bad race.Well deserved. Can't wait until the tour 2012 starts just down the road from me.Will be an emotional day because of the events that recently happened in Liege.
