How long must it have taken for national language to have standardized. Presumably early on in man's evolutionary speech development descriptive words were settling down at a tribal level. If tribes stayed in local areas then language would develop differently in a relatively short distance, and so on for an entire populated land mass. So how does that become all merged into one countries 'accepted' language?

Summer - as long as you could drink then yes

I wonder why there's such a fundamental difference between mainland Europeans and Britons that we treat roundabouts so differently. Whereas here everyone stops on the edge of the roundabout and waits their turn to get on, in Europe everyone just ploughs on and it somehow works itself out. Watching it is like seeing a different species. It's really bizarre. How there aren't more crashes is beyond me. But there you go, completely mental way of doing it and it works.

Also after a nuclear war I always imagined everyone would just die. Is that not the case?

I also wonder why every time I type the word fundamental (including just there) I type it fundemental before having to correct it. No matter how many times it happens, I always do with an "e" first. I think I'm actually incapable of learning the correct way.

I remember a quote from Einstein along the lines of being unsure about the weapons that would be used in World War III, but he thought that World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that a nuclear holocaust would pretty much end the place. Then the talking chimps off the PG Tips adverts would take over the world just in time for one survivor in a leopard skin loin cloth to scream "You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah damn you. God damn you all to hell!"

After World War II, a lot of my great uncles who were in the Navy went on to work on cruise ships.
