Snubbed Lampard
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:58:45 pm »
Frank Lampard's future at Chelsea could be in doubt after reportedly walking away from the bench when being an unused substitute in Saturday's 4-1 win over Swansea City.

Lampard, 33, has failed to make Andre Villas-Boas' starting line-up for three of the last four matches. But the game against Swansea was the first time he has not come off the bench.

Villas-Boas opted to use his final substitution to bring on 18-year-old starlet Joshua McEachran for Raul Meireles in the 83rd minute for his first appearance of the season in the Premier League. The Mail on Sunday reports that Lampard then got up and walked down the tunnel without speaking to his manager.

In Lampard's only start in the last four matches he was taken off at half-time in the 3-1 loss at Manchester United.

It suggests that Lampard may not figure in Villas-Boas' long-term plans after being a fixture in the Chelsea side since joining the club from West Ham United for £11 million 10 years ago.

Asked about Lampard's position, Villas-Boas attempted to play down suggestions that the England international's days are numbered.

He said: "I don't know but this is nothing to speculate about. They are team players and the players want the team to perform, and Frank is like that. He is a fantastic player, a magnificent player and soon he will be back to the team, sooner than you expect.

"The decisions today were mainly based on the fact we played 120 minutes (in the Carling Cup) on Wednesday and these players were fresh, apart from John Terry and Petr Cech. In a tight calendar like we have, it's important to have squad rotation."

With Steven Gerrard returning to fitness and, when fit, Jack Wilshere a certain starter for England, Lampard's position with the national team is also under threat.

All players come to the end of their playing career.
Although he's still got a year or two in him, at 33, Lampard is approaching that.  For Chelsea? probably not, but for someone else, very probably.

All players reach that point in their careers, it's just up to the player to recognise and realise that their days might be numbered at a certain club, and move on or down the pecking order.

Failing that he's going to have to realise that he's no longer a cert, in  the first choice 11.  At that point he's got to realise that from now on he's only going to be a bit part player, who'll warm the bench more often than not, or get first team football by moving on to another club.

Hes done nothing now for 2 years, about time someone noticed

The reason nobody has noticed is that it's bollocks.

2009 2010

51 appearances
27 goals

2010 2011

32 appearances
13 goals

Compare that with Stevie Gerrard

2009 2010

49 appearances
12 goals

2010 2011

24 appearances
8 goals

So who has done nothing for two years?

Problem for lampard is when the goals dry out  what other outstanding qualities does he have?

He isn't a very good passer and lacks imagination of a proper playmaker and he can't dictate a game like scholes could in his later years. Positionally he isn't that great either to play as a deeper central midfielder either.

He had 6 assists last season and 20 the season before that. I agree his was always a hard running game and to that extent he might not be able to extend his career like a quarterback midfielder could but he was never that player anyway and still proved very influential for his team.

Hasn't Lampard once said he'd want to end his career under Harry? Or did he say West Ham?

Either way, can't see him staying at Chelsea beyond next summer.

He's past it and that's a terrible attitude to have if you're not being used in a game that was already won. He needs to be phased out as there are other players who can play in his position and do a better job there than him now.

Good on Villa Boas for phasing him out, if Lampard thinks he's too good to be sitting on the bench from time to time, he'll find himself reduced to a regular spectator sharpish.

Was clearly on the slide last season. I dont think he can have too many complaints.

Mata is a much better player in that advanced midfield role. Ramires/Meireles have much more of the energy required to play the role further back next to the holding midfielder.

It was going to happen sooner or later. Not a bad player to have as back up though. Just remains to be seen whether he's willing to occupy that role.

Happens to them all...you go 20+ years playing every single week at every level you played at. Then comes a time when you mind thinks your body is in better shape than it actually is.

Great career, overrated due to the caliber of player he has played with since 2003 but great career

I think Chelsea's problem last season was the lack of mobility in Essien who's had too many injuries and Lampard. That certainly isn't the case when Mata and Ramires play.

Lampard is better than Meireles imo, but it feels like AVB wants players on his team who really understands his philosophy and do all they can for him and he simply trust Meireles more than Lampard.

One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

Dunno mate, this has obviously been covered before, but if Carra was dropped, and Agger injured for the billionth time, we'd be with Skrtel and a young/unproven Coates ?.

Carra's past it no doubt, but you need to blame the lack of foresight in the transfer activity more for this, I think.
