Andy Carroll
« on: September 18, 2011, 09:12:39 PM »
Lets try to keep this civil and free from the crap of the previous thread.

Genuine question. Where do we go from here with Carroll? Do we give him games to regain his fitness for maybe the potential detriment of the teams performances or play him here and there and just continue to see these lacklustre performances?

He hasn't had any meaningful service, apart from long hoofs from defence and he has resorted to dropping deeper to come and find the ball but his lack of fitness is hindering his attempts to then get in the box.
He can be accommodated in the team.

considering he was playing right wing, thought he was our best player today, looked much fitter.

I think he's fit and still a very very good player, he just doesnt fit into the way we play.

He's naturally big and will never become a fast player. He needs to either adjust himself and adapt to our pass and move system or kenny needs to find a role for him that he fits in and is useful in.

At the moment, he just doesnt have a place really. Play him up front and he will win headers but doesnt seem to be in the right place to get on the end of them.

The service to him in the limited game time he's had this season has been shocking. Judge him at the end of the season after he's had some decent service.

Not like he's missing sitters is it?
I think the same, can't stand him, but if you could have a £1million pound cheque or steve bruces head hollowed out and filled with pound coins which would you have?

when you lose control of the midfield to the extent we did today your forwards are going to have a tough job, when your team is getting played off the park and then goes down to 10 men your forwards are going to have a really tough job, when you are getting outplayed and go down to 9 it`s an impossible job up front.

Confidence thing for me. Ideal game to play him in is Wed night v Brighton.

Hopefully he can net a few and go on a bit of a run...

Would take him out the firing line for a bit. Maybe use him as an impact sub bring him on to change games.

He has everything just needs to regain a bit of confidence and settle down at his new club.

The bench. For me, it's simple, Suarez is our best player by a country mile and he has looked for better playing with and around Kuyt as a focal pont. Kuyt starts, Carroll doesn't.

I was happy with his signing but Man City aside he hasn't looked a threat and most importantly there is no chemistry between him and Suarez.

I didnt see much of Carroll when he played for newcastle so im not sure why we bought him.

But i presume he played quite well for us to have spent 35 million on him.

My question is what are his strengths? and that is an honest question not a swipe at how he is playing.

I mean the way we play is to play quick attacking football through the opposition. We dont seem to have set up to play wingers to supply Carroll because we primarily play through the centre via Suarez. Carroll is slow on the turn and over distance and his close control and passing sometimes leave a lot to be desired. He does not fir in the way we play and in build up play we are effectively playing one up front because Carroll in my opinion cant play that role.

Is he a target man? that style of play went out of fashion a long time ago.

I hope he turns out to be a star for us but i just cant see it, not because of his form but because he is a wrong fit for the team

The opening post asked should we give him more time to get fit. I cant see how he isnt fit at this stage. He had a full pre season.

Just can't understand our usage of him sometimes. As we did against Spurs last season, we had him dropping deep and passing to the wings, then he just stayed outside the box leaving Suarez alone in the box. Didn't understand the reasoning behind using him on the wing instead of Suarez either. Don't get me wrong, his performances have been disappointing since he joined. it doesn't help though when we use him like this imo

I think he worked really hard today. Service was awful. I still believe that a Carroll in form is threat for every defence. We had some really tough games now, he will turn good in the games that we dominate, once he finds the net he'll find confidence starting with Brighton and Wolves.

He will definitely play on Wednesday, hopefully play well/score and build up confidence in himself. Let's face it, Torres is going through worse and he's not a shit player. All in the head.

Exploiting suarez's pace I think mate otherwise team's will push up even higher up against us if carroll was the focal point which is a huge worry.

Obviously we'd have to be able to play the game high up the pitch and create chances in the box for him to get the best out of him. A fantastic finisher, but unfortunantly not the best in build-up play, which is a massive weakness for him.

Most of his headed goals came from balls in from deep by Barton. Also has a hell of a left foot which we have seen v City.

I am a little worried but first and foremost regardless of price tag he is a talented player and on paper we would be a weaker team without him. I really do think that's it's a combination of the price tag weighing on him and his lack of fitness (I mean his stop start season and half nothing to do with over drinking / eating etc) as well as lacking self confidence and believe.

Rome wasn't built in a day and all the parts need to fit. The squad is capable of third/fourth place without question but we are a few years behind utd city and yes even chelsea for competing for the title. We are playing catchup and have to repair the years of severe damage that was done in the previous regime.

In terms of today we started shockingly and never recovered. I haven't read other comments but I hope the referee isn't being made a scapegoat I think he is one of the worst mike jones but Adam 2nd tackle was straight red and Skrtel looked a nervous amateur wreck!

I aint a Carroll basher and have always said he needs games, and the fact myself and most other people defend him is great, however, it has to be admitted we look a far better team without him in it.

To me, I think he will come good but he just doesnt look like he has the quickness of mind to play with Suarez (at the moment). Luis knows what hes going to do with the ball before he gets it. Andy needs to have it at his feet before he decides where its going next.

Hopefully will come good though.
