Earlier that day England got the draw they needed to oust Uruguay and make the last 16. They drew 0-0 with Nigeria, former Liverpool keeper David James, future playmaker Joe Cole and former (and indeed future) striker Robbie Fowler didn’t feature but Michael Owen and Emile Heskey did play. Both players were subbed in the second half.

I seem to remember that game kicked off at 7.30am. It was one of the most mind numbing 0-0 draws I have ever seen. Not quite Liverpool v Utrecht standard, but not far off!!

On this day in 2010 Holland got the better of Denmark in their World Cu finals opener in South

Africa,a match where two Liverpool players were on target.Unfortunately,Daniel Agger was

credited with Holland's first after team mate Edson Braafheid inexplicably headed the ball

into the net via Agger's back, before Dirk Kuyt slotted a late clincher.

correct me if im wrong

on this day

only realizing this now but bizarrely on this day in 1970 all 4 quarter finals of that years world cup were played at the same time on the same day and one of them saw defending world champions England crash out to West Germany. England raced into a 2 goal lead thanks to Alan Mullery and Martin Peters but Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler dragged the game into extra time where Gerd Muller gave the West Germans a 3-2 win. England manager Alf Ramsey bore the brunt of the criticism for substituting Bobby Charlton who along with his brother Jack decided to call it a day for the national side on the plane going home. Goalkeeper Peter Bonetti was also criticized as he replaced Gordon Banks that day due to Banks suffering food poisioning. Liverpool's Emlyn Hughes made the squad but didn’t feature in any games.

World cup 74, Scotland got off to a winning start and lead their group after a 2-0 win over Zaire, Peter Lorimar and Joe Jordan scored the goals in the first half. Future Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish played 74 minutes. Ironically despite winning the match, this game arguably cost Scotland qualification from the group stage as others recorded bigger wins which would eventually eliminate Scotland on goal difference.

Euro 92, England were unlucky not beat favorites France in Malmo. Stuart Pearce rattled the bar from a free kick while Alan Shearer also went close. Pearce later suffered a broken cheekbone in a collision with French hard man Basile Boli. For the French Gerard Houllier acted as assistant to manager Michel Platini while the English had future red Nigel Clough in their squad but he didn’t feature. Mark Wright was officially in the squad but by then, the Liverpool captain was already out of the tournament with an achillies injury. Incidentally there was also another Liverpool related player acting as an assistant manager that day as former captain Phil Neal was assistant to England boss Graeme Taylor.

Later on that day in the same group, hosts Sweden beat Denmark 1-0 thanks to a goal from Thomas Brohlin, future Liverpool defender Torben Piecknik was unused for the Danes though he did feature later in the tournament. Anyone of the 4 teams could still go through as it stood it was Sweden 3, France 2, England 2, Denmark 1. England were still unbeaten but had yet to score a goal.

Euro 96, The Czech republic caused a major shock by beating Italy 2-1 at Anfield. Pavel Nedved and Radek Bejbl scored for the Czech's after Enrico Chiesa drew Italy level. Two future Liverpool players played for the Czech's that day, Patrik Berger and Vladimir Smicer with the latter replacing the former after 64 minutes.

World cup 2002, Portugal were one of the surprise teams to be eliminated in the groups, albeit by the hosts South Korea. They lost 1-0 thanks to a goal from Park Ji Sung, right back Beto and midfielder Joao Pinto were both sent off for Portugal. Liverpool defender Abel Xavier played the last 17 minutes as a sub. In another match played at the same time in the same group, Poland (already out) rested Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek but did gain some credibility by beating USA 3-1, former Liverpool keeper Brad Friedel was in goal for the States who made the last 16 anyway.

Euro 2004, Italy and Denmark played out a scoreless draw with future Liverpool midfielder Christian Poulsen doing well over his 77 minute appearance to stifle the mercurial Francesco Totti. It clearly got to Totti who received a 3 match ban when he was caught on camera spitting at Poulsen.

World cup 2006, Spain got their tournament off to a flying start as they crushed Ukraine 4-0. Liverpool's Xabi Alonso opened the scoring, David Villa added two while future striker Fernando Torres scored a breath taking 4th. Alonso played 55 minutes while Liverpool team mate at the time, Luis Garcia played 77 minutes. On the bench Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina wasn’t used. For the Ukraine future Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin played 90 minutes.

Euro 2008, Spain overcame Sweden 2-1 thanks to a goal from then Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and a last minute winner for David Villa. Zlatan Ibrahimovic earlier drew Spain level. On the bench for Spain were an unused trio of Liverpool players in Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina. On the same day future Liverpool defender Sotis Kyrigiakos played 90 minutes for Greece as they lost 1-0 to Russia thanks to a goal from Konstantin Zyryanov

World cup 2010, As Rafa_la said Denmark lost 2-0 to Holland with Liverpool's Daniel Agger credited with an own goal. Dirk Kuyt scored the other after a shot hit the post. Christan Poulsen played 90 minutes for Denmark some 2 months before he would join us while on the Dutch bench, Ryan Babel was unused.

In the same group that day a goal from Keisuke Honda was enough for Japan to overcome Cameroon, former Liverpool defender Rigobert Song was an unused sub for Cameroon.

world cup 1958

Scotland can only stay in the world cup by beating France and lose 2-1 thanks to goals from Just Fontaine and Raymond Kopa although Sammy Baird does pull one back in the second half. Liverpool goalkeeper Tommy Younger is dropped to the bench for this despite captaining the side in the first two games. Younger never played for Scotland again. Bill Brown took over the nets for the game. Fontaine's goal was one of 13 he bagged in the finals, a staggering record.

On the same day Alan A'court played the 90 minutes as England drew 2-2 with Austria having to come from behind twice, Karl Koller and Alfred Korner twice gave Austria the lead but Johnny Haynes and Derek Kevan equalized meaning England would have to go into a playoff with the Soviet Union to decide who would qualify from 2nd place in the group as both teams had identical records.

euro 80,

England are unlucky to lose to host nation Italy 1-0 in Turin in a game which saw its fair share of crowd trouble before and during the match. the current irish assistant manager Marco Tardelli scored the games only goal meaning all England could do was finished 2nd in their group which would enable them to compete in the 3rd place play off. England manager Ron Greenwood was also criticized for failing to select a unanimous number 1 keeper instead preferring to rotate Peter Shilton and Liverpool keeper Ray Clemence. Ray was the one to miss out here, and his fellow Liverpool team mates David Johnson and Terry McDermott all remained on the sidelines as did former captain Emlyn Hughes and future coach Joe Corrigan. Phil Thompson, Phil Neal and Ray Kennedy all played the 90 minutes though as did former striker Kevin Keegan who was captain.

1982 world cup

Scotland got off to a flyer with a 5-2 win over New Zealand in Spain, they were 3 up at half time thanks to Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish and future Red John Wark scored twice. John Robertson and Steve Archibald scored twice in the second half to give the Scots a 5-2 win. New Zealand had briefly pulled it back to 3-2. Dalglish and Wark aswell as Graeme souness and Alan Hansen all played the 90 minutes.

1988

England go out of euro 1988 with a 3-1 defeat to Holland. Marco Van Basten scored all 3 dutch goals, Bryan Robson briefly drew England level. John barnes and Peter Beardsley both started as did future Red mark Wright. Beardsley was subbed late on for Mark Hateley. Liverpool's Steve McMahon didnt play.

That night the Republic of Ireland in their first tournament played one of the most cultured European teams off the park. Ireland took the lead against the Soviet Union when Ronnie whelan scored a stunning overhead kick but late on Oleg Protassov equalized. Liverpools Ray Houghton also played 90 minutes as did John aldridge and former red Kevin Sheedy in a 1-1 draw. A draw in their next game with Holland would mean Ireland would be in the semi final .

1990

West Germany crushed the United Arab Emirates 5-1. Rudi Voller scored twice with Uwe Bein, Jurgen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthaus on the scoresheet. Future Red Karl Heinz riedle played 17 minutes as a sub.

Euro 1992

Scotland's first ever Euros ends as they lose 2-0 to Germany, Future Liverpool striker Karl Heinz Riedle played 67 minutes for Germany and opened the scoring before Stefan Effenberg made it two in the second half with a cross that took a huge deflection off Maurice Malpas. The other future red in action that day was Gary Mcallister who played the 90 minutes for Scotland.

Euro 1996

England and Scotland meet at Euro 96 in a memorable encounter, Alan Shearer gave England the lead in the second half before the real drama commenced. Future Red Gary McAllister missed a penalty for Scotland and just two minutes later Paul Gascoigne made it 2-0 with a goal of utter brilliance. Liverpool players in the England squad were sub Jamie Redknapp whose brief cameo was ended by injury although many credit him with opening the game up in his brief time on the field. Steve McManaman played the 90 minutes as did future Liverpool captain Paul Ince. Future Red Nick Barmby and current Red robbie Fowler were unused subs.

World cup 98

England get off to a winning start beating Tunisia 2-0 with goals from Paul Scholes and Alan Shearer. Liverpool captain Paul Ince plays the 90 minutes and his team mate Michael Owen gets a brief cameo at the end of the game as a sub for Teddy Sheringham. Owen is just 17 at the time. Steve McManaman does make the squad but doesnt feature.

That same evening a trio of players who would play for us in the future all made sub appearances for Germany as they beat USA 2-0, the players in question are Dietmar Hamann, Christian Ziege and Markus Babbel, on the opposite bench USA keeper Brad Friedel doesnt feature. The goals are scored by Jurgen Klinsmann and Andy Moller.

World cup 2002

Germany left it late to beat Paraguay 1-0 in the last 16 with Oliver Neuville scoring the winner in the 88th minute, Christian Ziege formerly of Liverpool and current player at the time Didi Hamann didnt feature.

Later on that day England swept aside Denmark 3-0 with first half goals from Rio Ferdinand and Liverpool players Michael Owen and Emile Heskey. Owen is subbed however at the time allowing former Red Robbie Fowler to play the second half, Heskey lasts a further 20 minutes before being replaced by Teddy Sheringham. Unused on the England bench are former keeper David James and future Red Joe Cole. Also unused on the opposite bench is future Red, Christian Poulsen.

Euro 2004

Milan Baros of Liverpool scores to help the Czech Republic overcome Latvia 2-1, Vladimir Smicer made a substitute appearance aswell. Later on that night in the same group future red bolo Zenden featured for Holland in a 1-1 draw against Germany. Former keeper Sander Westerveld was an unused sub. Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann played the 90 minutes but Christian Ziege, now playing for spurs was an unused sub.

World cup 2006

Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch are both on target as England beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 to seal their place in the last 16. England are now guaranteed top spot too. Jamie Carragher played 58 minutes before being replaced by Aaron Lennon with the score 0-0, in the same minute former Red Michael Owen was replaced by Wayne Rooney while Future red Stewart Downing replaced another future Red in Joe Cole after 74 minutes. Reds Keeper past and present (respectively), David James and Scott Carson didnt feature.

Euro 2008

Phillip Degen who will join us this summer again doesnt feature as hosts Switzerland beat Portugal 2-0 but by then the hosts are out anyway. Played at the same time former striker Milan Baros suffers heartache as the Czech Republic go out losing 3-2 to Turkey. The Czechs lead the match 2-0 with just 15 minutes to go but two goals from Nihat and one from Arda Turan complete a remarkable comeback.

World cup 2010

Reds Defender Martin Skrtel played the 90 minutes for Slovakia in a 1-1 draw vs New Zealand. robert Vittek gave the Slovaks the lead but Winston Reid equalized in the last minute.

On the same day Raul Meireles played 85 minutes for Portugal as they drew 0-0 with the Ivory Coast. Meireles joined us a couple of months later.

world cup 1982, England could not have made a better start to the world cup than they did here. A goal after just 27 seconds from Bryan Robson gave them the lead against the world class French. Soler drew France level but further goals from Robson and one from Paul Mariner gave the English a handsome 3-1 win. Liverpools Phil thompson played the 90 minutes in the season he lost club captaincy, thompson was also said to be disappointed he wasnt selected as captain for this tournament, that honour was instead given to Ipswich Town defender Mick Mills. The only other Liverpool player who featured in the game was Phil Neal who came on as a last minute sub for Kenny Sansom.

Terry McDermott didnt feature and neither did former Reds, Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan (inj), nor did future coach Joe Corrigan. By now manager Ron Greenwood had given the number 1 shirt to Shilton so Clemence was no longer being rotated, what a fine selection of keepers that was. Clemence did however have the actual number 1 shirt for the tournament although this was purely for alphabetical purposes.

euro 84 Denmark didnt need future red Jan Molby as they crush Yugoslavia 5-0. Molby is the only Liverpool related player at the tournament. Frank Arnesen scores twice and the other goals are scored by Klaus Berrgreen, Preben Elkjaer and John Lauridsen.

World cup 1990

After a disappointing defeat to Costa Rica, Scotland recovered to defeat Sweden 2-1 thanks to goals from Stuart mcCall and Mo Johnston. Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie was unused as was future red Gary Mcallister.

On the same day England are unlucky to draw 0-0 with Holland in Cagliari, Gary Lineker and Stuart Pearce both had goals disallowed though england atleast could take solace that from a near identical group they had in euro 88 they still had a fantastic chance to qualify for the last 16. by this stage in euro 88 they were out. Future Red Mark Wright played the 90 minutes, as did current Red John Barnes but fellow reds Steve McMahon and Peter Beardsley were unused.

euro 96

Germany crushed russia 3-0 at Old Trafford with Jurgen Klinsmann scoring twice and Matias Sammer also getting on the scoresheet. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both played 90 minutes for the Germans.

On the same day reigning champions Denmark lost 3-0 to Croatia at Hillsborough but former Liverpool defender Torben Piecknik didnt feature. The game featured a magnificent lobbed goal by Davor Suker, one of his two goals on the day with Zvonimir Boban scoring the other.

world cup 98

Scotland draw 1-1 with Norway to give themselves a chance of making the knockouts. Havard Flo put Norway ahead but Craig Burley equalized. Stig Bjornebye played the 90 minutes for Norway, but Liverpool team mate Oyvind Leonhardsen didnt play, neither did Vegard Heggem who would join us that summer.

Euro 2000

on the very day i sat my last ever day in school, Holland and France sealed their place in the last 8 of Euro 2000. France beat the Czech Republic 2-1 with goals from Thierry Henry and Youri Djorkaeff, Karel Poborsky had previous drawn the Czechs level. Vladmir Smicer represented the Czechs while future Red Nicolas Anelka played 55 mins for France.

As for Holland they mowed through Denmark 3-0 with goals from Patrik Kluivert, Ronald De Boer and future red Bolo Zenden. Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld made an 89th minute appearance for Edwin Van Der Saar who was struggling with injury.

World cup 2002

Ireland's brave world cup ends against Spain. The Spanish take the lead after just 4 minutes through future Reds striker Fernando Morientes but in the final minute Robbie Keane (another future Red) scored a penalty to take the game into extra time (incidentally earlier in the match Ireland's regular penalty taker Ian Harte missed another penalty). although Ireland dominated the entire second half and just about all of extra time it should be noted that Spain played extra time with 10 men as they used all their subs and also had 3 goals disallowed over the course of 120 minutes. Ireland exited on penalties when Kevin Kilbane, Matt Holland and David Connolly all missed their spot kicks, the only succesful conversions came from future Reds Robbie Keane and Steve Finnan who both played the entire game. Spain won the shootout 3-2. It was one of the best games of the tournament. former Red Steve Staunton captained Ireland but was subbed after 50 minutes for Kenny Cunningham, it was the last of Stauntons 102 caps. Another Former Red Jason McAteer was an unused sub.

Euro 2004

Morientes was again on target for Spain in a 1-1 draw this time with Greece. Angelos Chariteas equalized for Greece in the second half. Morientes played 65 minues before being replaced by Juan Carlos Valeron. Future striker Fernando Torres played the last 10 minutes as sub but fellow future Red Xabi Alonso didnt feature.

World cup 2006

An Argentina side featuring future Red Javier Mascherano wiped the floor with Serbia and Montenegro by whipping them 6-0. Future Red Maxi Rodriguez played just over an hour but managed to find time to score two goals. Carlos Tevez, Lionel Messi and Hernan Crespo also scored but the goal of the match undoubtedly belonged to Esteban Cambiasso who capped a wonderful move with a sublime finish. On the same day in the same group Holland beat Ivory Coast 2-1 thanks to goals from Arjen Robben and Ruud Van Nistelrooy although Kone did get one back for the Ivorians. The Dutch squad contained current Red Jan Kromkamp and future Reds Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel but none of them played.

World cup 2010

Uruguay trounce host nation South Africa 3-0 with Diego Forlan scoring twice while Alvaro Periera also scores. Future Red Luis Suarez played the 90 minutes. On the same day Spain surprisingly lost 1-0 to Switzerland. Former red Xabi Alonso played the 90 minutes but fellow former Red Alvaro Arbeloa doesnt feature and neither does current stopper Pepe Reina. Fernando Torres then of Liverpool played the last half an hour. The games only goal is scored by Gelson Fernandes.

1958 World cup

England lose 1-0 to the Soviet Union in a playoff after both teams ended the group stage with identical records. Antaoly Ilyen broke English hearts with the games only goal putting his team into the quarter final. Liverpool’s Alan A’Court played the 90 minutes.

1990 World cup

Future coach Jose Ochotorena is an unused sub for spain as they defeat South Korea 3-1 in a match which Michel scores a hattrick. As a result of a Belgium 3-1 win over Uruguay the same day it pretty much guaranteed Spain would be in the last 16 but as good as the Belgian game was it was overshadowed by a horrible scoreless draw that same day between Ireland and Egypt.
Ireland knew a win would pretty much guarantee a place in the last 16 but Egypt proved in their draw with Holland that they were no mugs. However the Egyptians played for a 0-0 draw and rarely left their own half all game. Their 8-1-1 formation frustrated a defensive minded Ireland who struggled to break them down. Ray Houghton did have one great chance but was denied by Ahmed Shoubier in the Egyptian goal as was Kevin Sheedy (the former Red) who didn’t quite catch his attempted scissor kick well. Steve Staunton went close with a shot from the edge of the box which whistled past the post. However the game was overshadowed by the Egyptian’s ultra defensive tactics and some blatant time wasting. Indeed many believe the wheels were set in motion on this day to implement the back pass rule which would eventually ban keepers from picking up the ball from opponents who passed it back to them (barring a header).

The reds in action were former striker John Aldridge who played 64 minutes while Houghton and Staunton played the full 90 as did former Red Sheedy. Ireland manager Jack Chartlon ended up in a bitter war of words with controversial Irish Journalist Eamonn Dunphy who was heavily critical of Ireland’s inability to break the Africans down and of Charlton’s decision not to play several creative players, one of whom was unused Liverpool midfielder Ronnie Whelan. The criticism of Charlton saw Dunphy become a national figure of hate.

Euro 1992

England crash out of euro 1992 when they lose 2-1 to Sweden. David Platt gave England the lead but goals from Jan Eriksson and Tomas Brolin put the hosts into the semi final. Manager Graham Taylor was heavily criticized when he withdrew Gary Lineker even though his side was chasing the game. Future Red Nigel Clough was unused as he had been all tournament. Central defender Mark Wright didn’t feature as he was injured.

In the same group played at the same time Denmark surprisingly beat France 2-1 to make the semi final. Henrik Larsen gave Denmark the lead but Jean Pierre Papin equalized, Denmark won the game thanks to Lars Elstrup. Future Red Torben Piecknik made a sub appearance while the assistant manager in the French dugout was future Reds manager Gerard Houllier who got the job after this tournament.

World cup 94

World champions Germany opened their campaign with a 1-0 over Bolivia to kick USA 94. Jurgen Klinsmann scored the games only goal in the 61st minute just after future Red Karl Heinz Riedle had been subbed for Mario Basler.

Euro 2000

A 94th minute from Costinha gave Portugal a 1-0 win over Romania to seal their path to the last 16, their side featured future Red Abel Xavier. Later on that day in the same group an Alan Shearer goal gave England a 1-0 win over Germany. Former Reds Steve McManaman and Paul Ince started for England as did current striker Michael Owen. On the bench were Emile Heskey, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Nick Barmby who joined us that summer. England were managed by Kevin Keegan, a former Liverpool player. Gerrard replaced Owen for only his second cap on the hour mark while Barmby replaced Paul Scholes on 71 minutes.
Christian Ziege and Markus Babbel who joined us that summer represented Germany. I was convinced Dietmar Hamann played on this day but two reports I found suggest he was unused.

Euro 2004

England recovered from an unlucky defeat to France to beat Switzerland 3-0. Steven Gerrard of Liverpool scored one and Wayne rooney got the other 2. Aswell as Gerrard, Michael Owen plays 72 minutes before being replaced by Darius Vassell. Former Reds Keeper David James played the 90 minutes but future, current and soon to leave players like Joe Cole, Jamie Carragher and Emile Heskey all remained on the bench.

World cup 2006

The highly fancied Czech Republic are well and truly beaten by Ghana 2-0 thanks to goals from Asamoah Gyan and Sully Muntari. Former Reds striker Milan Baros cant play due to injury.

World cup 2010
France lose 2-0 to Mexico in a match they just didn’t seem bothered about, former Reds striker Nicolas Anelka is hauled off at half time while fellow former Reds Alou Diarra and Djibril Cisse didn’t play.

Earlier that day a Gonzalo Higuan hattrick helped Argentina defeat South Korea 4-1 in a match where current reds Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez both played 90 minutes. In the same group that day Greece overcame Nigeria 2-1 in a match where Sotis Kyrigiakos played 90 minutes.

June 18

1974

Scotland earn themselves a creditable draw with Brazil who had won 3 of the last 4 world cups. Unfortunately for Scotland their next opponents Yugoslavia beat Zaire 9-0 on the same day meaning Scotland would have to beat the Yugoslavs or else hope Zaire could hold Brazil to a one goal win. Future Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish played the 90 minutes

1980

England have nothing but pride to play for against Spain but may still qualify for the third place playoff, although they don’t they do finish off their first tournament finals in 10 years by beating Spain 2-1 in Naples thanks to goals from Trevor Brooking and Tony Woodcock. Dani had earlier drawn Spain level from the spot. Ray Clemence played the 90 minutes in goal and saved a second spot kick from Dani, while Terry McDermott and Phil Thompson also got through 90 minutes. Future Reds coach Joe Corrigan didn’t play and neither did former Captain Emlyn Hughes nor Ray Kennedy. Former striker Kevin Keegan played the 90 minutes.

1982

Scotland briefly looked like causing an upset when David Narey opened the scoring in their match with Brazil. A win would have put either side into the next group phase and a stunning open from Narey saw Scotland lead for some 15 minutes. Goals from Zico, Oscar, Eder and Falcao though give the rampant Brazilians a crushing 4-1 win and also reduce Scotland’s goal difference to 0. Scotland will now have to beat the Soviet union next time out.  Scotland were captained by Liverpool skipper Graeme Souness on the night while Alan Hansen played the 90 minutes as did future Red John Wark. Kenny Dalglish played the last 27 minutes as sub.

1986

England sail into the quarter finals with a straight forward win over Paraguay, Gary Lineker’s brace takes him to 5 goals for the tournament while future Red Peter Beardsley scores the other. Another future Red, John Barnes didn’t play.
On the same day Denmark, who had blitzed the group stages, made a good start by taking a 33rd minute lead in their last 16 game against spain courtesy of a Jesper Olsen penalty, but a horrible error from the same player allowed Emilio Butrageuno to level it up before half time and with that the Danes fell apart, Butrageuno would go on to score a magnificent 4 goals that day and a penalty from Goitoetxea gave Spain a 5-1 win.

1988

The Republic of Ireland in their first ever tournament were narrowly beaten by the eventual winners Holland in euro 88. Needing a draw to guarantee a semi final birth, Ireland lost out in the 81st minute when a viciously spinning header from Wim Kieft swerved cruelly into the net. The ball appeared to be going wide but when it bounced it spun back into the net.  Former Red, Kevin Sheedy came on for Chris Morris at half time while Reds Trio, Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton and John Aldridge all played the 90 minutes.

Played at the same time in the same group, England could have done Ireland a favour by beating the Soviet union but Bobby Robson’s team were already out and had nothing to play for losing the game 3-1. Sergey Aleinikov gave the Soviets the lead and although Tony Adams equalized, further goals in each half by Alexei Mikhailchenko and Viktor Pasulko meant England had lost all 3 games. Reds in action were the starting duo of John Barnes and Steve McMahon while former Red Dave Watson (much more famous at Everton) also played. McMahon was withdrawn in the second half in favour of Neil Webb. Striker Peter Beardsley didn’t feature.

Euro 1992

Germany lost 3-1 to defending champions Holland with the Germans featuring future Red Karl Heinz Riedle who played 76 minutes. The goal scorers were Frank Rijkaard, Richard Witschge and Dennis Bergkamp for the Dutch while Jurgen Klinsmann scored for the Germans. Germany could have been eliminated if the CIS (aka Russia) beat Scotland who were already out of the tournament but the Scots did the Germans a massive favour with a crushing 3-0 win. Paul McStay, Brian McClair and a penalty for future Red Gary McAllister meant the Scots could atleast say they won a match even if they were going home.

World cup 1994

USA opened their campaign as world cup hosts with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. Eric Wynalda equalized with a stunning free kick for the US after George Bregy gave the Swiss the lead. Future Reds Keeper Brad Friedel was an unused sub while the Swiss were managed by future Reds manager Roy Hodgson.
Later on that night the Republic of Ireland showed why they were tipped by many to win the world cup as they defeated Italy 1-0 in New York. Although Ireland were 4/1 outsiders to win the game it was a result that they deserved. Former Reds midfielder Ray Houghton scored the games only goal with a stunning lob after 12 minutes. Ireland came close in the second half to extending the lead when Ray Houghton, Andy Townsend and in particular John Sheridan all came close, the latter striking the bar. Both subs that day had represented Liverpool at some point in their career, Jason McAteer replaced Houghton in the second half and joined Liverpool a year later while 5 years after he left Liverpool, veteran striker John Aldridge came on in injury time for a very dehydrated Tommy Coyne. Another future Red in the lineup was Defender Phil Babb but Reds midfielder Ronnie Whelan didn’t play. The other former Red to feature was Steve Staunton who played 90 minutes despite suffering with the intense heat.

Euro 96

England absolutely trashed Holland to seal a place in the quarter final by beating the Dutch 4-1 thanks to two goals each from Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham. Patrik Kluivert pulled one back late on for the Dutch. Steve McManaman of Liverpool played the 90 minutes but future captain Paul Ince played just 68 minutes. Robbie Fowler made a late appearance as sub while future Red Nick Barmby also got a late run out. In the same group at the same time Scotland’s 1-0 win over Switzerland drew them level with Holland but by the tiniest of margins they were going home. Had England won by 4 or Scotland managed 1 more goal it would have seen them qualify. Gary McAllister who would join us 4 years later captained the Scotland team and played the full game as did Swiss centre back Stephane Henchoz who joined us in 1999.

World cup 98

Hosts france had Zinedine Zidane sent off but they still trashed Saudi Arabia 4-0, Thierry Henry scored two with David Trezeguet and Bixi Lizarazu also scoring. Future Red flop Bernard Diomede started the game and played 58 minutes before being replaced by Youri Djorkaeff.

Euro 2000

Norway lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia when Savo Milosevic scored after 8 minutes. Current red Vegard Heggem started the game while past and future red respectively, Stig Bjornebye and John Arne Riise were on the bench. Bjornebye replaced the injured Heggem after 35 minutes but Riise didn’t play at all

Euro 2004

Future Red Christian Poulsen doesn’t play as Denmark beat Bulgaria 2-0 with goals from Jon Dahl Tomasson and Jesper Gronkjaer.

World cup 2006

Goals from Adriano and Fred give Brazil a 2-0 win over Australia for whom Harry Kewell played as a 56th minute sub for Tim Cahill. On the same day former Red midfielder Alou Diarra was an unused sub when France drew 1-1 with South Korea, Henry gave France an early lead but Ji Sung Park equalized.

Euro 2008

Spain had already qualified so Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Pepe Reina all played in a 2-1 win over Greece while Fernando Torres was rested. For the Greeks, future red Sotis Krygiakos played 62 minutes. Charisteas gave Greece the lead but Spain won the game via goals from Ruben De La Red and Daniel Guiza.

World cup 2010

Serbia record a shock 1-0 over Germany thanks to a goal from future Red Milan Jovanovic who joined us that summer. In the same game Lukas Podolski missed a penalty for the Germans. Later on that night England can only managed a poor 0-0 draw with unfancied Algeria. There is a heavy Liverpool related contigent to the squad. Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all played 90 minutes but Joe Cole who joined us that summer didn’t play. The former reds in the squad were Emile Heskey who was replaced by Jermaine Defoe on 74 minutes, Peter Crouch who came on for 6 minutes as a sub at the end of the game and Stephen Warnock who didn’t feature.

The 4-1 against Holland was a stunning performance by England. They totally outclassed the Dutch, and many genuinely felt that football was 'coming home'.

19th June 1984, Euro 84, France

Denmark need just a point against Belgium to make the semi finals of Euro 84 but trail 2-0 at one point thanks to Jan Ceuelmans and Franky Vercautern. Frank Arnesen gets one back from the spot before sub Kenneth Brylle made it 2-2 and Preben Elkjaer made it 3-2 to the Danes setting up a semi final with Spain. future Red Jan Molby didnt feature.

19th June 1990, World cup 90, Italy

West Germany sealed top spot with a 1-1 draw against Colombia at the San Siro. Pierre Littbarski gave the West germans the lead in the 88th minute but almost immediately Freddy Rincon equalized giving Colombia a chance to be one of the best 3rd placed teams in the tournament which would eventually be confirmed. Future Red Karl Heinz Riedle was an unused sub.

19th June 1994, World cup 94, USA

Cameroon and Sweden played out a 2-2 draw in the Rose Bowl, Pasadena. Roger Ljung gave the Swedes the lead but goals from Embe and Oman Biyik gave Cameroon the lead but with 15 minutes left Martin Dahlin equalized. Future Rigobert Song played the 90 minutes for Cameroon.

Later on that day Norway kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over Mexico. Kjetil Rekdal was on the field only 6 minutes when he scored the winning goal in the 84th minute.  Stig Bjornebye and future Red Oyvind Leonhardsen played the 90 minutes for Norway.

19th June 1996, Euro 96, England

Anfield served up one of the best games in euro 96 as Russia drew 3-3 with the Czech Republic infront of a crowd of just 21000. Suchoparek and Kuka scored for a 2-0 lead to the Czechs who knew a win would be enough to qualify from the group stage but Russia despite being eliminated fought back through Mostovoi, Tetradsze and Beschastnykh, a result which would eliminate the Czechs as they were 3-2 down but 8 years before he did the same thing in euro 2004 Vladimir smicer who would join Liverpool in 1999 equalized to send his country through.Smicer had come on for kuka with just over 20 minutes left while Patrik Berger played 90 minutes but was subbed in injury time.

19th June 1998, World cup 98, France

Spains world cup hopes hung by a thread after a 0-0 draw with Paraguay leaving them with one point after two games. future Red Fernando Morientes came on as an early second half substitute for Juan Pizzi

19th June 2004, Euro 2004, Portugal

Germany could only manage a 0-0 draw against Latvia where Liverpool were represented by Dietmar Hamann for 90 minutes but former red Christian Ziege didnt play. Later on that night I was raging I missed one of the games of the tournament. I was stuck out for a meal and asked if they had the game on later, they said no, i left my meal with 15 to go to see the game live on a big screen. Lying fuckers.

the game in question was Holland vs the Czech Republic. Holland raced into a two goal lead Wilfred Bouma and Ruud Van Nistelrooy but the Czechs wouldnt give up and made a tactical change bringing on Vladimir Smicer of Liverpool for Zdenek Grygera. Jan Koller pulled one back before half time and second half strikes from both Liverpool players on the night Vladimir Smicer and Milan Baros gave the Czechs a sensational 3-2 win. with the scores at 2-2 Hollands John Heitinga was sent off. On the dutch bench former keeper Sander Westerveld and future red Bolo Zenden were unused.

19th June 2006, World cup 06, Germany

Switzerland recorded a 2-0 over Togo thanks to goals from Alex Frei and Tranquillo Barnetta. Future Red Phillip Degen played the 90 minutes.

Andriy Rusol, Sergiy Rebrov, Andriy Shevchenko and Maksym Kalynychenko all scored as Ukraine recovered from a 4-0 defeat to Spain by inflicting the same score on Saudi Arabia. Andriy Voronin played 77 minutes for Ukraine on the day. Voronin joined us 12 months later.

Later on that night two goals from future red Fernando Torres and one from raul gave spain a 3-1 win over Tunisia in a match they were losing up to the 71st minute. Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia both started but Garcia didnt play the second half, Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina was an unused sub.

19th June 2008, euro 08, Austria and Switzerland

The euro 2008 quarter finals kicked off with Germany beating Portugal 3-2 thanks to goals from Bastian Scweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack. Nuno Gomes and Helder Postiga scored for Portugal twice halving Germany's two goal deficit. Future Red Raul Meireles came on as sub on the half hour mark for Joao Moutinho

19th june 2010
world cup

Australia clung on to slim hopes they could make the knockouts. Brett Holman gave them the lead against ghana who equalized through an Asamoah gyan penalty, former Liverpool player Harry Kewell started but was sent off. The 1-1 draw meant the Aussie's could still make it to the last 16.

On the same day Cameroon let slip a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Denmark. Samuel Etoo gave Cameroon the lead but goals from Niklas Bendtner and Dennis Rommedahl sealed the win for the Danes who were represented by Daniel Agger and future Red Christian Poulsen for the 90 minutes. Former Red Rigobert Song didnt feature for Cameroon.

In the same group that day Holland defeated Japan 1-0 to seal their passage to the last 16 with a goal from Wesley Sneijder. Dirk Kuyt played the 90 minutes but ryan Babel didnt play.

gonna scale my research down a bit as its very time consuming and not many appear interested

in 1982 England overcome Czechoslovakia 2-0 to seal their passage to the next group stage of the 1982 world cup. Phil Neal, Ray Clemence, Joe Corrigan, Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott all fail to feature although only 2 of these were Liverpool players by this time, Keegan was also injured but in his absence an own goal and an earlier effort from Trevor Francis gave England the win, the English had Liverpool's Phil Thompson in their lineup. The group stood at England 4, Kuwait 1, Czechs 1, France 0 although Kuwait and France had only played one game. It was only two points for a win so England could not finish lower than second.

in 2000 England throw away a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 to romania, Liverpools Michael Owen was one of englands scorers. Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler are among those who were in the squad. Steven Gerrard who had impressed everyone with his cameo performance against Germany in the previous game is injured. the big villan is undoubtedly Phil Neville who gives away a needless 89th minute penalty which allows Romania to win 3-2. England under Kevin Keegan are out of euro 2000

but this day in 2006 Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole both scored in a 2-2 draw with Sweden with both teams already through (pretty much anyway) coles is one of the goals of the tournament. former Liverpool striker Michael Owen suffers a serious knee injury in the 2nd minute. Owen who had hardly played for months leading up to the tournament, Owen misses almost all of the following season as a result. Peter Crouch and Jamie Carragher both played but Scott Carson and David James didnt. My girlfriends brother was in Germany at the time and actually managed to get to the game. despite the pressure being off both teams it was still a cracking game.

I can assure you HR that I read your input every day. I have added a few comments of my own to some of your reviews. I admire the research you do as I've never had the patience to research then spend ages typing it all in. All my LFC stuff has been from personal memory, and my memory isn't as good when it comes to International tournaments.

Loved Riise, and he scored some spectacular goals for us (free kick v the Mancs my personal favourite). Shame he lost his way in the last 2 seasons he spent here, but the reception he got playing for Fulham at the end of last season showed how fondly remembered he is by LFC fans.

21st June euro 2000 (Belgium and Holland)

Group C couldn’t have been more dramatic. Last day it read Yugoslavia 4, Norway 3, Spain 3, Slovenia 1.
Yugoslavia and Spain just went bald headed for each other. Milosevic put the Yugoslavs infront after 30 minutes but Alfonso levelled for Spain 8 minutes later. Govedarica gave Yugoslavia the lead again 5 minutes into the second half but Munitis levelled immediately. Despite the dismissal of Jokanovic, Komljenovic made it 3-2 to Yugoslavia with 14 minutes left. In injury time a penalty for Mendieta and a further Alfonso goal sent spain through on 6 points, a defeat would have handed Norway, Vegard Heggem, John Arne Riise and Stig Inge Bjornebye a quarter final berth but it was not to be as the Norwegians could only draw 0-0 with Slovenia. Heggem was the only red to feature playing 90 minutes. A win for Yugoslavia would have sent Norway through.

On the same night two goals from Vladimir Smicer gave the already eliminated Czech Republic victory against already eliminated Denmark (2-0) while in the other game Holland and France, already through, fought over top spot with each other. Dugarry and Trezeguet twice gave France a first half lead, Patrik Kluivert made it 1-1 and in the second half Frank DeBoer made it 2-2 before future Red Bolo Zenden scored the winner for Holland. Sander Westerveld was given a run out in goal for Holland while Nicolas Anelka started for France.

21st June world cup 2002 (south korea and Japan)

England played Brazil in the world cup quarter final, I remember being given the morning off and I was looking forward to this. Every other bastard fucking day I took off around this time someone would barge into my room at 7 and wake you up on your day off. Needless to say the one time you actually asked someone to do it they didnt call you.
"we didn’t know"
"I told you to"
"but you were sleeping"
"I told you I took the fucking day off to watch it, jesus do you think id take the day off to watch so that I could purposely miss it? Why is it when I want a lie on you barge into my fucking room at 630 too look for a pair of socks yet when I ask yous to wake me you don’t bother"

IDIOTS IDIOTS FUCKING IDIOTS

Liverpool's Michael Owen gave England the lead but Rivaldo equalized on half time before Ronaldinho curled a majestic free kick over the head of David Seaman to give Brazil the lead. Ronaldinho was then sent off. At which point only then I was woken up and suffice to say sweet fuck all happened after this. Owen lasted 79 minutes before being replaced by Darius Vassell, other Liverpool related players in the squad such as Joe Cole, Robbie Fowler and David James didn’t play but Emile Heskey got the 90 minutes in.

Later on that day Didi Hamann and ex red Christian Ziege played 90 minutes as Germany beat USA 1-0 thanks to Michael Ballack. Brad Friedel played the 90 minutes in goal for the states.

21st June, euro 2004 (Portugal)

Going into the final group games any of one of the teams in England's group could still qualify, it was France 4, England 3, Croatia 2, Switzerland 1.

England were to play for Croatia with a draw likely to be enough, but they made a bad start when Niko Kovac opened the scoring after 5 minutes. Paul Scholes levelled 5 minutes before the break and just on half time a stunning effort from 18 year old Wayne Rooney put England infront. Rooney was absolutely lighting up the tournament and scored his 4th goal of the campaign midway through the second half which would surely be enough for England. The performances lead to Rooney joining Man United in a big money move shortly after the tournament. Igor Tudor did pull one back but a further England strike for Frank Lampard made it 4-2 which was probably a fair result. Steven Gerrard played the 90 minutes but was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, one man who did leave Liverpool that summer was Michael Owen and he also played the 90 minutes, another Red to leave that summer was Emile Heskey who didn’t feature and neither did Jamie Carragher or future red Joe Cole but former keeper David James did play the 90 minutes.

In the same group in the other match Switzerland lost 3-1 to France with Liverpool's Stephane Henchoz playing 85 minutes for the Swiss. Goals from Zidane and two from Theirry Henry gave France a straight forward enough win after Volanthen drew the Swiss level.

21st June 2010, world cup 2010 (South Africa)

Raul Meireles opened the scoring for Portugal as they played North Korea, the Koreans had surprised everybody in their first game when they only narrowly lost 2-1 to Brazil but in the second half of this game the floodgates opened and Portugal won the match 7-0. Simao, Hugo Almeida, Leidson and Cristiano Ronaldo were also on the scoresheet while former Chelsea man Tiago scored twice. Meireles joined us shortly after the tournament.

Later on that night Spain recovered from their surprise defeat to Switzerland by beating Honduras 2-0. David Villa scored twice but later missed a penalty. I was raging as I had a double for Portugal to win by 2 or more and Spain to win by 3 or more but they just dicked around at 2-0 without putting it in the net. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres lasted 70 minutes before being replaced by his future Chelsea team mate Juan Mata. Former Red Xabi Alonso played the 90 minutes and his Real Madrid and former Liverpool team mate Alvaro Arbeloa came on as sub for the last 15 minutes. Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina was an unused sub.

21st June 1990

On a blistering hot evening in Palermo, Ireland were competing against the side that eliminated them from euro 88, Holland. While another side that was in that group in 88 were England and at the same time they would play Egypt.

Ireland were probably relieved to just get back on the pitch even if this was their toughest game. The Irish came under fire when they played out a dull 0-0 against Egypt. Although it was boring there was a great carnival atmosphere with street parties all over Ireland in this their first ever world cup. Songs such as "put em under pressure"  and "give it a lash jack" had the nation in party mood. But this was punctured by controversial pundit Eamonn Dunphy. Looking back Dunphy was right to have a go at the team but he admitted in later years "I had to call the damn thing but this was a national celebration, it felt like I had walked into a party and complained this wine is no good and theres a rat in the sausages but this wasn’t what people of Ireland should have wanted from a world cup."

He was right but at the time football knowledge in Ireland wasn’t what it is now. It was a terrible match but the country was mainly in party mood and Dunphy was seen as a party pooper. During his analysis of the game live on tv Dunphy moaned "that was rubbish" "im ashamed of irish football" and infamously threw a pen across the studio live on air. Dunphy became a national figure of hate for questioning big Jack Charlton who had given Irish football stuff they only dreamt of. A big no no! it became even worse when after the game Dunphy and Charlton came face to face in a press conference and Charlton attempted to ignore Dunphy.

Charlton "next question"
Dunphy "excuse me"
Charlton "not you"
Dunphy "I beg your pardon"
Charlton "your not a proper journalist"
Dunphy "I beg your pardon"
Charlton "YOUR NOT A PROPER JOURNALIST"

The row which I heard over a basic tape recorder descended into a shouting match with Charlton claiming Dunphy was only there to slag him off while Dunphy claimed he had every right to be there as he wrote for the Sunday Independent newspaper. Charlton screeches the press conference to a halt with "END OF STORY". Shortly after Charlton defended himself saying he wasn’t preventing Dunphy from being there he just didn’t want to answer his questions, when asked why Charlton didn’t hold back
"I don’t like him and I don’t have to work with people l don’t like. I think he is a bitter little man"

Dunphy may well at this point have been the most hated man in Ireland.

Back to group F.

All 4 teams had identical records. They all stood level on 2 points with 2 draws and had both scored and conceded 1 goal. So a draw in one of these games would see both the teams in that match separated by lots, literally a draw would take place to determine who would finish where in the group.

There was further complications as there was 6 groups, but with 16 teams needed for round 2 it meant both the top 2 in each would go through automatically but there was only room for 4 of the 6 third placed teams. So of the 6 third placed teams it needed to be worked out who the best 4 where. Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay were all 3rd on 3 points in their groups while the other 3rd placed teams were Austria and Scotland who had just 2 points. Austria and Scotland could still make it if both games in Ireland's group ended in 1-0 wins. A 2-1 defeat for anyone in the group would leave that team with identical records to both Scotland and Austria. So in theory two 2-1 games tonight would see lots drawn to decide who would be 3rd and 4th in group F and that team would then have another draw to determine who would be the final 3rd placed team to make the last 16. Confused?

Ireland were up against Holland and made a poor start when Holland took the lead after just 10 minutes through Ruud Gullit. Just 60 seconds later, a cross by Liverpool's Steve Staunton was met with a bullet header from former Red, John Aldridge but the goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside. The scores stayed the same until half time meaning the group stood now at Holland 4, England 3, Egypt 3, Ireland 2. Ireland would go out while the top 3 would all qualify.

Meanwhile in Cagliari (played at the same time) England took the lead against Egypt with a Mark Wright goal (who would join us a year later). This now meant England and Holland would be tied on identical records of 4 points with Ireland and Egypt joined 3rd on 2 points with identical records, bringing Austria and Scotland back into the mix.

All was not lost for Ireland as in a similar manner to their equalizer against England a huge punt from goalkeeper Packie Bonner down the middle of the pitch caused havoc in the Dutch defence. Dutch goalkeeper Hans Van Bruekelen failed to control a backpass and Niall Quinn slid into equalize. At 1-1 Ireland had the beat between their teeth and may have had a penalty when Henk Fraser appeared to trip Niall Quinn. However after scoring in the 71st minute Ireland were level and now it meant England were topping the group while Ireland and Holland were level in 2nd but with both teams now on 3 points it meant they would be guaranteed to make the knockouts. With Egypt seemingly unable to score against England through any way shape or form the last 10 minutes descended into a farce.

Ruud Gullit and Mick McCarthy (the captains) appeared to suggest to one another "draw this and were through" and with that a pact appeared to be made for both teams to draw, confident that England had more than enough to see off Egypt both teams went through the motions for the final 10 minutes tapping around the defence, no pressure applied and played out for a 1-1 draw evoking memories of the infamous game with Austria and West Germany in 1982 although to be fair it wasn’t as bad as that, both teams tried to win for 80 mins, not like 1982. England held on for their win meaning they topped the group with 4 points. Egypt finished last so were out but Ireland and Holland were level on 3 points and had the same goal difference and head to head. So both teams were through but it needed to be established who was 2nd and 3rd. Ireland were given 2nd spot with Holland 3rd, meaning Ireland would have an extra day to rest before playing Romania in Genoa which was regarded as an easier game than the one the Dutch faced as they had to play West Germany who also had the advantage of playing in the San Siro where they had already played all their group games.

Ireland vs Romania is one of the best stories of any Irish tail, but that’s for another day

the players by the way to feature

England 1-0 Egypt
Mark Wright plays the 90 minutes and scores while Peter Beardsley played 6 minutes at the end in place of Steve Bull. John Barnes and Steve McMahon played the 90 minutes.

In the Ireland - Holland match, Ronnie Whelan made his first appearance at the tournament in place of former Red Kevin Sheedy. At the same time John Aldridge who left us that season was subbed in favour of Tony Cascarino. Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton of Liverpool played the 90 minutes.

Had I known then what we were to discover a few weeks later then I wouldn't have defended Owen, but at the time he was still an LFC player. Owen was getting slaughtered by the media during Euro 2004 due to the fact he hadn't scored. The same media incidentally who were getting Fat Frank and Terry to ask Stevie G how he'd fancy a move to Chelsea! The fact of the matter was that Owen was sacrificing his own game to benefit Rooney by dragging defenders out of position to create space for Rooney. The 18 year old striker was dynamic that night as he took full advantage of Owen's self sacrifice to score twice, and generally terrorise the Croatia defence. Owen did get his name on the scoresheet in the 1/4 final when he netted with a cooly taken chip after just 3 minutes against Portugal. The same game would see Rooney hobble off with a toe injury, and England lose on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in which they appeared to be denied a legitimate winner for an alleged foul.

June 22 1996 will be remembered as the day England actually won a penalty shootout!! They were totally outplayed by Spain at Wembley, and the Spaniards were also denied a perfectly valid goal. England somehow held on though to get to penalties, then held their nerve as Stuart Pearce vanquished his own ghost of 1990 to help win the shootout. Normal service would resume 4 days later against Germany!!

There was a Liverpool connection in the other 1/4 final that day in that it was at Anfield. I was there to see the Holland take on France. It was quite an experience being sat by a very colourful and noisy contingent of Dutch fans who occupied the Anfield Road end (I was actually in that corner of the Lower Centenary). The game itself was a fairly tepid affair which had penalties written all over it long before the end of extra time. The Dutch failed in the shootout, and France went on to meet Czech Republic in the semi final. Incidentally, my ticket for this cost £45 (back in 1996!!), and the FA wondered why every stadium outside Wembley was at best 2/3 full, although when you looked at figures quoted there was clearly a lot of fiddling going on to try and make the attendances look far better than they actually were. The attendance given was 37461 at a time when the capacity was under 41,000. As an Anfield ST holder of 10 years at the time, I would say there was 25,000 tops inside the ground.

NO LFC GAMES ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Birthday Today

Albert Whitehurst (1898)

On this day in 1906,construction of the club's famous Spion Kop Stand began.Liverpool were

celebrating a second First Division Title under the Legendary Tom Watson, and so were planning

for a future where they could accomodate far more of their ever-increasing numbers of

supporters.

The Kop

The Spion Kop was a mighty terrace behind one of the goals at Anfield. It was built in 1906,

as a reward to the fans after Liverpool had clinched their second league championship. It was

an enormous structure, capable of holding as many as 25,000 supporters. It had 100 steps and

towered above the Walton Breck Road behind the ground. The name came from a small hill in

South Africa known as Spion Kop where in January 1900, during the Boer war, a battle left

hundreds dead. Many of the soldiers killed came from Lancashire regiments with a strong

contingent from Liverpool. The Liverpool Echo was the first to suggest calling it the Kop

22nd June 1974, World cup 74 Germany

Scotland go out of the world cup despite not losing a match. A win over Yugoslavia will give them a place in the next round but with 81 minutes gone Karasi puts them 1 down but Joe Jordan equalized shortly afterwards. The 1-1 draw featured future red Kenny Dalglish who played 65 minutes before being replaced by Tommy Hutchinson. This would mean Scotland would go out if Brazil won by 3 goals or more against Zaire, the match ended 3-0 so the Jocks were out.

22nd June 1982, World cup spain 82

Certainly is a day for Liverpool scoring as we will see. Needing to beat the USSR, Scotland get off to a fine start through Joe Jordan who puts them ahead but goals from Chivadze and Shangelia gives the Russians the lead after 84 minutes. Liverpool skipper Graeme Souness sets up a tense finale with a goal 3 minutes from the end but the Scots cant find a winner and go out. They would have qualified if New Zealand had have beaten Brazil by a few goals the following night but theres more chance of me shagging Shakira. On that night in Malaga, Liverpool were represented by Souness who captained the team aswell as Alan Hansen. Kenny Dalglish didn’t play, I can only assume he was injured while future red John Wark played the 90 minutes.

22nd June 1986, World cup Mexico 86

No one will ever forget the day England were cheated out of the world cup by the hand of god. Argentina defeated England in one of the most talked about games in world cup history. After a careless lobbed backpass  from England midfielder Steve Hodge, the tiny Diego Maradona somehow outjumped the much taller Peter Shilton to put England infront. TV replays indicated Maradona punched the ball into the net. England couldn’t believe it that none of the officials spotted it. 4 minutes later there was no disputing one of the all time great goals as Maradona picked up the ball in his own half and beat atleast 5 players before finishing it off. It was a goal of incredible quality with BBC's Barry Davies famously saying "you have to say that’s magnificent". England played their last card in the shape of future Liverpool man John Barnes who was making his first appearance of the tournament and Barnes terrorised the Argies down the left and set up a goal for Gary Lineker (which sealed his place as the world cups top scorer). Davies again famously quipped "go on run at them!" . in the final minute Lineker (again from a Barnes cross) somehow missed an open goal and England were out. But all the talk was of the hand of god!

Future Liverpool number 7 Peter Beardsley played the 90 minutes.

22nd June 1994, USA world cup 1994

On a very sad note Brad Friedel is part of the USA squad which beats Colombia 2-1, the match is infamously remembered because Andreas Escobar of Colombia scored an own goal, a few weeks after the tournament, Escobar was shot dead directly as a result of this.

On the same day in the same group Switzerland under Roy Hodgson walloped Romania 4-1 to seal their place in the last 16.

22nd June 1996, England, Euro 96

As touched upon by Alan earlier England and Spain met at Wembley in the first quarter final, I don’t recall it being a particularly memorable game and im pretty sure I fell asleep watching it. Spain were twice denied by an offside flag with both calls very dubious (6 years before the same thing happened to them again in 2002). It went all the way to penalties. While England converted all 4 penalties, Spain's Fernando Hierro smashed his against the cross bar before his defensive partner Miguel Angel Nadal had his saved by the hero of the hour, David Seaman. The penalties will forever be remembered for Stuart Pearce. Having missed a crucial shoot out spot kick in a world cup semi final 6 years prior, Pearce stepped up and smashed his penalty in and didn’t hold back celebrating almost about to burst into tears, a motion of pure ecstacy and raw emotion. As for Liverpool well, Robbie Fowler was apparently down to take the 5th penalty but wasn’t needed having played the last 11 minutes of extra time. Nick Barmby came on at the same team with Steve McManaman started the game and being one of 3 players withdrawn on 109 minutes. England had just 19 of the 22 available because future Red Paul Ince was suspended and there were injuries also to Newcastle's Steve Howey and Liverpool's Jamie Redknapp.

Later on that night France also advanced via penalties against Holland, the match was played at Anfield and had also finished 0-0.

22nd June 1998, world cup 1998, France

Glen Hoddle's England suffer defeat to Romania. One time Coventry striker Viorel Moldovan scores the opener but Liverpool's 18 year old striker Michael Owen draws England level after he came on for Teddy Sheringham. In the final minute a horrible mistake by Graeme Le Saux allowed his former Chelsea team mate Dan Petrescu to score the winner. However on the plus side England would just need a point from their final group game against Colombia to make the knockouts. Liverpool's Paul Ince started the game but a knock forced him off after just 32 minutes. Steve McManaman didn’t play. On the day in question I remember sitting my final junior cert exam. I wasn’t bothered about it as it was metalwork which I sucked at and I quite frankly didn’t care. Before the exam our vice principal came in saying the adjudicator/supervisor hadn’t reported for duty. We always used to take him off as he had a very thick northern Ireland accent, we didn’t hesitate to do it either as we hated him and mocked his enormous 20 something stone frame.

One lad however got fed up listening to me and start making all these threats and within seconds the two of us were boxing the head off each other in the classroom. I wasn’t gonna back down from this guy but I have to admit he was a lot tougher than I bargained with. He gave me an almighty knee in the nuts which hurt but I just remember it set me off. I grabbed him in a headlock, throwing him head first into a door before punching him around the back of the head which almost broke my finger. Pushed him into a few tables for good measure before we sat down to start an exam. Was the last proper fight I was in until November 2011. Was pretty nuts.

22nd June 2006, world cup 2006, Germany

Harry Kewell scores a late equalizer for Australia and their 2-2 draw with Croatia is enough to see them make the last 16 of the world cup. Croatia twice threw the lead away after going ahead via goals from Dario Srna and Niko Kovac. Craig Moore's penalty drew it level at 1-1 but Kewell was the hero with the last equalizer. It was a bad tempered match with Brett Emerton of Australia sent off for two yellows in the last ten minutes while Dario Simic was also dismissed. The match gained a lot of negative publicity that was particularly damaging to referee Graeme Poll who failed to realize he had booked Josep Simunic twice late on. Simunic must have been determined to get sent off as after the match ended he continued to argue with the referee who finally showed him a red card, albeit after THREE yellow cards.

22nd june 2008, Switzerland and Austria, Euro 2008

Spain march to euro 2008 features a pretty dull game against Italy which ends 0-0 but Spain triumph on penalties when Iker Casillas saves from Danielle De Rossi and Antonio De Natale. Casillas had been rested for the win over Greece meaning Liverpool's Pepe Reina returned to the bench as did Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso. Fernando Torres did start but with 5 minutes of normal time left he was replaced by Daniel Guiza who was the only Spaniard to miss his penalty. On the opposite side future Red Alberto Aquilani came on late in extra time for Alessandro Del Piero but didn’t take a penalty. Spain would play Russia in the semis, the same side they buried 4-1 in  the group stage.

22nd June 2010, South Africa, World cup

Uruguay head into the last 16 topping their group as a goal from future Liverpool striker Luis Suarez seals a 1-0 win over Mexico.

Any mentions of renaming the Walton Breck Bank 106 years ago, always gives me a shudder.

My Great Grandfather Alfred Houghton fought in The Boer War with The Lancashire Fuseliers, and had the "Ladysmith" clasp on his medal. My Nan Rose always said her father beemed with pride when anyone mentioned The Spion Kop.
Makes me proud to think we had a true KOPITE in the family. I'll post a photo of the great man later.

Makes me proud to think we had a true KOPITE in the family. I'll post a photo of the great man later.

The Lancashire Fusiliers were one of the antecedent regiments of my own today. Whenever the relief of Ladysmith is mentioned, I constantly remind all the mancs in my Battalion ( including the current RSM!) of the greatest memorial to that battle!

Also, it's nice to know of a little bit of regimental history on RAWK, cheers WOOLTONIAN :)

Birthday Today

Keith Burkinshaw (1935)

So seventy-seven years old today. Happy Birthday, Keith. Only played in Liverpool's first team once (April 1955) but later played in a combined total of just over four hundred Football League matches for Workington and Scunthorpe United. Probably better known as the Tottenham Hotspur manager when they won the F.A. cup twice and the UEFA cup in the 1980s. He also won the Portuguese Super Cup with Sporting Lisbon in 1987,  which they won by beating  their city rivals Benfica home and away.
