Enrique is a much better defender than Riise ever, ever was. If there ever was an overrated player it was Riise. Truly he was the worst left back we've had for the last 20 years.

Agree with all of that, but my point was we have a finite transfer budget unlike some obvious teams I could mention, so I think we can get by with those mentioned. Not ideal I know but given where we are as a club players need to be adaptable.

Contrary to RAWK mythology we had the joint 3rd best defensive record in the PL and of course reached 2 x Finals. I think the majority of our problems lie on the offensive side, creativity and taking chances, which is IMO where the majority of the targets should be.

Cor, using the 3rd best defensive record in the PL to defend the quality of an LB, and pointing instead to the need to upgrade in attack. Imagine having a young attacking and productive LB in the team, and still having the 3rd best defensive record in the PL.

Or we should aim to have the FIRST defensive record, no ?

Not having that. Riise was more than solid defensively, not many wingers got past him and he also added a lot of height to our team defending set pieces. Granted, he had a couple of absolutely dreadful seasons but Rafa got the best out of him. Unfortunately all people seem to remember is that own goal against Chelsea.

Having said that I'd take Enrique over him any day - I'd just like to see him show a bit more intelligence in his play, he has all the right tools to be one of the best left-backs in the league. There's certainly no need to think about replacing him, just getting some cover in so we can give him a rest once in a while.

We had that, then Lucas got injured.

Enrique as first choice LB barely registers in terms of problems IMO.

Bobby MacMahon, a knowledgeable pundit on FSC in Canada (IMHO, although I disagree with him once in a while) pointed out that Enrique looked overweight... I didn't notice that during the match, did anyone?

Reckon that's highly unlikely.

Enrique being the vain, none shirt wearing man he alledgedly is. He's not skinny though, he's a pretty ripped dude going by the photo that gets bandied about of him in his underwear. It almost burns the eyes every time I see it!

I remember Riise more for the number of times he slowed an attacking run with back passes and the hopeful long blasts at goal instead of passing to someone in a better position, it got to the stage when I dreaded him getting the ball. Give me Enrique any day his form went off with the rest of the team last season.

Complete and utter revisionist nonsense I'm afraid.

Riise was a good servant for us, and it was only the form (and fitness) of Aurelio in 2009 which saw him pushed out.

Selling him was arguably a big mistake due to Aurelio's injuries and forced us to go with RAWK's favourite argie teenage full back who wasn't quite ready (ultimately leading to his own demise).

I have doubts about Enrique in the long term if we have real ambitions to be a top side again, but for the moment he's reliable enough although his decision making and play in the final third is somewhat hit and miss.

or a centre half who scored 15 goals....or strikers who scored 20 goals a piece and a midfielder who scored 15 goals.......not to mention the right and left winger who scored 10 goals each and all the other chip ins!!!

i would assume the first place to look in defence of a lb would be the defensive record of the defence in which that particular DEFENDER played, but then i am very old fashioned

There's a young lad by the name of Jack Robinson who'll take his place if Enrique isn't up to scratch. To be fair enrique showed last season that he was very good, in the first half of the season he was boss especially in defense. If he can recreate that form you can't complain..

My point is that your stated defence of Enrique was a bit like Comolli's gloating over how he identified Enrique as a true bargain. We spent money on getting to the same place that Insua got us to, whether it's the 3rd best defensive record in the PL or better performance stats than Clichy. If the 3rd best defence in the PL is something to be satisfied with, we could have got that without spending any money.

Lol poor Jose, had a bit of a mare tonight, looks massively unfit and probably needs to knock all the weightlifting on the head, it's a bonus he's a big strong boy but just looks far too bulky at the moment and his mobility has suffered.
