Man arrested for trying to split the atom in his kitchen

A Swedish man has been arrested after attempting to split atoms in his kitchen, claiming that he was only doing it as a "hobby".

Richard Handl said that he had the radioactive elements radium, americium and uranium in his apartment in southern Sweden when police showed up and arrested him on charges of unauthorised possession of nuclear material.

Handl, 31, said he had tried for months to set up a nuclear reactor at home and kept a blog about his experiments, describing how he created a small meltdown on his stove.

Only later did he realise it might not be legal and sent a question to Sweden’s Radiation Authority, which answered by sending the police.

“I have always been interested in physics and chemistry,” Handl said, adding he just wanted to “see if it’s possible to split atoms at home”.

The police raid took place in late July, but police have refused to comment. If convicted, Handl could face fines or up to two years in prison.

Although he says police didn’t detect dangerous levels of radiation in his apartment, he now acknowledges the project wasn’t such a good idea.

“From now on, I will stick to the theory,” he said.

The give-away, was a blow out in a local substation, plunging the neighbourhood into total darkness.

His apartment was seen to 'glow in the dark'.

Its hardly worthy of a fucking prison sentence. He asked the authorities if it was ok, why didn't they just say "No it isn't. Stop it or you will be in deep shit."?

Swede admits home-made atom experiment was 'crazy'

A Swedish man who tried to set up a nuclear reactor in his kitchen at home has admitted his plan was "crazy".

Richard Handl said he had just been "curious" and wanted to see if he would be able to split an atom.

Police were called to his flat in Angelholm in southern Sweden after he got in touch with Sweden's radiation authority to check if what he was doing was legal.

Mr Handl said he would stick to reading books about physics from now on.

Mr Handl, who is 31 and unemployed, told the BBC World Service he had bought the radioactive materials on the internet and from Germany.

He had been working on the experiment for around six months and posted regular updates on his blog.

He was questioned by police, who confiscated his nuclear materials as well as his computer.

"I had it under control, it was not so dangerous," he told the BBC.

But he added: "It was pretty stupid."

It is unclear what will happen next in the police inquiry. Mr Handl said he expected a fine.

What's most interesting to me about this story is that he was able to acquire the radioactive material without the authorities knowing about it. I wonder how much he had and how he acquired it. What if terrorists get their hands on radioactive material? Dirty bombs in the hands of terrorists is a scary thought.

You can get Americium-241 out of smoke detectors.  Though I doubt enough to do anything evil with....plus it's not the most dangerous of radioactive materials.  I used it loads during my final degree project, and apart from the extra testicle I now have I'm perfectly normal.

Yes, there's a surprising amount of radioactive material around if you know where to look, but little that would be of the slightest use or pose a risk other than to yourself playing with it stupidly. Many sports watches use tritium these days for illumination, a bit safer than radium, but a pretty important part in 'boosting' to make a fusion gadget function.

However, a salutary warning to not try this at home and much better story than the Swede.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hahn

Okay, he also had uranium though. I don't know how much though, probably not a lot.

Not quite.

His experiments were all about attempting to make the Uranium....http://www.dangerouslaboratories.org/radscout.html..

Initially he tried bombarding a Thorium (from crushed gas mantles) Lithium (from batteries) mix with neutrons sourced by converting the alpha particles obtained from a 'gun' containing Americum (from smoke detectors) into neutrons via a sheet of aluminium.

It didn't work particularly well so he replaced the aluminium in the 'gun' with a strip of beryllium, and aimed it instead at pitchblende ore via a filter to slow the particles down.

With unlimited horizons, he then used the radium (from old watches) and the product of the above experiment to attempt to construct a sort of fast breeder reactor by blocking it all together using aluminium foil and duct tape...don't laugh.

By now the thing was starting to get pretty seriously radioactive, sufficient for the contaminated material eventually to fill 39 barrels to be sealed and buried in the long term nuclear waste facility in Nevada when the authorities got involved.

He was fortunate, or at least his neighbours were, that he didn't get to the Cherenkov radiation stage of tickling the dragons tail.

Mmm, the guy is a mere amateur compared to this kid from america.I have shamelessly pilfered this from Wikipedia

David Charles Hahn (born October 30, 1976), also called the "Radioactive Boy Scout", is an American who attempted to build a homemade breeder nuclear reactor in 1994, at age 17. A scout in the Boy Scouts of America, Hahn conducted his experiments in secret in a backyard shed at his mother's house in Commerce Township, Michigan. While not successful in creating a nuclear reactor, Hahn attracted the attention of local police who found radioactive materials in the trunk of his car. His mother's property was cleaned up by the Environmental Protection Agency ten months later as a Superfund cleanup site. Hahn later attained Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
While the incident was not widely publicized initially, it became better known following a 1998 Harper's article by journalist Ken Silverstein. Hahn is also the eponymous subject of Silverstein's 2004 book, The Radioactive Boy Scout.

Hahn, nicknamed the "Radioactive Boy Scout", is an Eagle Scout who received a merit badge in Atomic Energy and spent years tinkering with basement chemistry which sometimes resulted in small explosions and other mishaps. He was inspired in part by reading The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments, and tried to collect samples of every element in the periodic table, including the radioactive ones. Hahn diligently amassed this radioactive material by collecting small amounts from household products, such as americium from smoke detectors, thorium from camping lantern mantles, radium from clocks and tritium (as neutron moderator) from gunsights. His "reactor" was a large, bored-out block of lead, and he used lithium from $1,000 worth of purchased[1] batteries to purify the thorium ash using a Bunsen burner.[2]
Hahn posed as an adult scientist or professor to gain the trust of many professionals in letters, despite the presence of misspellings and obvious errors in his letters to them. Hahn ultimately hoped to create a breeder reactor, using low-level isotopes to transform samples of thorium and uranium into fissionable isotopes.[3]
Although his homemade reactor never achieved critical mass, it ended up emitting dangerous levels of radioactivity, likely well over 1,000 times normal background radiation. Alarmed, Hahn began to dismantle his experiments, but a chance encounter with police led to the discovery of his activities, which triggered a Federal Radiological Emergency Response involving the FBI and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. On June 26, 1995 the United States Environmental Protection Agency, having designated Hahn's mother's property as a Superfund hazardous materials cleanup site, dismantled the shed and its contents and buried them as low-level radioactive waste in Utah. Hahn refused medical evaluation for radiation exposure.[1]
