He's a psychopath, they often buy into some cause or belief set, he has managed to turn some already pretty extreme political views into something much darker. The more you hear the witnesses stories the more staggering this all becomes. Very brave young people, I'm not sure I'd be holding it together anywhere near as well.

Valid question, helps to try and get a sense of what happened. As if he was using a pistol then he has a limited number of rounds before he has to reload. If he is using a rifle, what sort as its the same again. Was he calmly walking about emptying his weapon, then calmly reloading, paints a picture of him, was he cold blooded and calm or was he in a frenzy.

Don't know if it's been mentioned in here, but he was a Freemason, and a declared Christian.

They're still searching for missing persons btw, 4-5 missing according to the police. He is being interrogated, no signs that he has had helpers. He has to some extent confirmed the facts we have been reading in the papers. Two weapons used on Utøya, a hand gun and an automatic rifle. He surrendered to the police immediately.The police didn't have to fire shots. He shot people for around an hour and a half before the police arrested him.
Interrogations are difficult, he is talking to the police, but they are tough. There may be one more shooter based on witnesses accounts, and there mey be undiscovered bombs in Oslo. He is detained in Oslo. The police had no prior knowledge of him.

One of the survivors said he was using an automatic weapon but set on single shot and was picking people off deliberately.

The more I read about it, the more pissed off I get. In a swedish newspaper, an eyewitness says that the shooter shot people and then when they were on the ground shot them again to make sure they were dead. He executed them. There's no other word for it.

Shocking just shocking, been reading and watching bits of this and what really gets me is everyone trying to grasp why he did it. Did he have political issues, an extremist? No dosen't matter what name he may claim to have carried out these atrocities in. He is a cold, hard psychopathic killer with serious mental issues.

but there are reports from some survivors that there was a 2nd shooter... Whether they got mixed up or something, i dont know..

At an educated guess, the fact this occurred on a tiny island would cause the emergency services difficulties in getting there as quickly as usual. I haven't read anywhere whether there was any size of police presence on the island before it happened.

Not only was it on an Island so the response time would be slow, but remember what had happened just before this. The explosions must of meant a lot of the police were occupied anyway!

A photographer from NRK, (BBC equivalent). He did not know what he was filming at the time.

Apparently it was from the first police helicoptor on the scene shortly before the full anti-terrorist squad turned up. I clicked on one of Norweigian sites off the Guardian site, they are pretty horrifying fly-by videos and I'm not going to post them here.

The bomb he set off in Oslo occupied all police and rescue workers while he went berserk on Utøya. The police has also said they had trouble finding a boat that could carry them over. I also remember reading during the shooting that paramedics arrived first, but had to wait for the police.

The bomb he detonated e few minutes earlier would send all the police in the area to Oslo. This is a really small island with just a few houses on, so no police there. And you have to get there by boat, and when the police got there, they didn't have a boat to take them out to the island.
As far as I'm concerned they can't be blamed in any way(not saying that you are). Police work on a lot of different scenarios, I don't think they had this one in their "book" though....

Just think about it, this is a guy who started a company two years ago so that he could buy large quantities of fertilizer without it being suspicious. His FB page and twitter account tells us that this was very well planned. The determination it would take to go through with something like this is scary to even think about... And the kids was his main targets........
