Wanted him signed for ages, when I used to post on the .tv official forum I stated we should look to him around November-ish and got slated  ::)

Will be an astute buy and really looking forward to him playing in a Liverpool shirt, he's going to be class.
Can't remember all of it but I remember I was in bed with Paul Bearer making proper passionate love to him, and then all of a sudden he was tossing me off

Put him in the side on FIFA, first game against United. Scored a hat-trick and had two assists, one of them for Adam.

That's it, PFA player of the year.

Welcome to LFC Stewert Downing. I'm sure you're gonna be great for us.

Couldn't give a fuck about the price and nor should any of you, it's as if your trying to piece together a fantasy league team and only have so much left for a winger. The people that count thought it was worth it and that will do for me, especially as he brings an extra diminution to the squad that we have lacked for ages.

Ecstatic we signed him. Class player. Can't wait to see him in a red shirt.

I'm very happy about this. I understand there are people with concerns, whether it be over the fee or that they haven't seen much of Downing or the fact he's been playing for midtable clubs throughout his career. And it takes more than people posting on the internet to assuage those concerns (as it should). People need to see him doing the business here to get rid of those concerns.

I'm really confident, moreso than with any other of our signings so far that it'll be very easy to see what he brings to us straight away. The fee is substantial, but if you look at it it has very much become the going rate for England internationals. And that's also worth pointing out that he's been consistently picked for the England side by different managers despite playing for mid-table teams and being an unfashionable choice amongst fans.

I don't profess to have seen loads of him. Obviously against us (and let's face it, he always causes us problems) and maybe 3 or 4 other times a season. But when you think how long he's been around I think that's enough to make a reasonable judgement. I understand it's unfashionable to rate Stuart Downing, but that's something else that makes me happy he's joined us, because in a year's time I doubt it will be.

Don't get what you mean. The stats say Modric is quality... and he is!

Interesting that you think that Modric stats are great, 40 games and 4 goals, 40 shots on target which is on a match! I bet Johnson from full back has scored more goals

Good post.

Looking at clips of Downing and watching Villa in recent years, they have played a lot of counter attacking football, both under O'Neil and Houllier and with the way Kenny has set us up since January, it looks like we'll be playing that way moreso than we did under Rafa and it's something Downing is adept at (I don't think he's as slow as some people make out). Will be good to see how he fits in a more possession based team, he seems intelligent enough so I'm hoping he should fit in with the players already here in that respect.
"My coach told me to warm up just before the break. He told me I was going to take care of Kaka. I didn't think it was possible to turn things around but in the dressing room at halftime Rafa Benitez was calm - "We are Liverpool FC, we have so many fans, we are not going to be slaughtered. If we can score a goal quickly we push on from there.""

So, was he asked about the bar photo in the first interviews? The truth needs be said about that.

Fantastic signing and a great addition to the team. Quality wide player that the team has been missing too long. Very pleased with Kenny's british revolution so far, proven premier league players like Downing will no doubt make us much stronger and provide many attacking options.

I believe Aquilani has more assists in the premierleague than Modric has, since we bought Aquilani. So Modric is not very impressive in terms of assists either. He´s still absolute quality though but the stats aren´t always everything.

I´m very excited for Downing, it´ll be interesting to see our play with an actual winger in the team.

People dont seem to be willing to change the opinions they had of Downing when he was at Boro.

The lad is an out an out winger who 90% of the time has an end product to his play, hes very rarely injured and has the pace we have been craving on the wing since McManaman left.

He will prove and score plenty of goals this season, hes a great signing and will prove the doubters wrong.

I just hope he is given a chance and the fans aren't expecting a fancy dan Nani style trickster that for me simply isn't his game. He is all about efficiency, all about doing the things that really matter providing width and getting to the byeline.

I can see him being far more effective away from home where teams have to come out and play and he will get more space. At home he will be more about keeping the ball moving rather than trying to dazzle the crowd.

A bit like a wide Lucas he may well be loved more by his team mates and the management than a good proportion of the crowd.
One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

I was against the Riera signing when Rafa brought him in but he did show us what natural width and the ability to spread the play gave the side. I'm hoping that this brief glimpse from Riera was a tease of what Downing can give us on a more consistent basis.

I know which game you mean, it completely changed my opinion of Downing and remember telling me mate afterwards how impressive he was.
He was up against Arbeloa and he completely tore him apart and put in some great deliveries which 'Boro had no one on the end of.

Undoubtedly he'll be under the spotlight even more now and I think he'll suprise a few people.

Must admit, I've never really rated Downing, personally. I've always thought that he lacked confidence, gave the ball away too cheaply, made too many mistakes, easily knocked off the ball, etc. and then the crowd start getting on his back. In fairness to the fella, he seems to have got his act together a bit more this season, so much so that he was Villa's player of the season in 2010/11. If Kenny can make him into a better player, hopefully we'll have a player on our hands. :)

It depends on how u are using the stats to reveal info.No point looking for goal scoring or assists stats to check how great Iniesta is.Similarly no point looking at pass completion stats of Gerrard to see how great he is.U cant use same stats for 2 different players.Stats always show almost everything if u are looking at the correct stats IMO.

Alonso would never look good on goal scoring or assists charts. But his pass completion, long range passing accuracy and  ball retaining stats will show his quality.Same for Modric though at a lesser level than Alonso IMO.

The side Kenny assembling is reminding of our side under Rafa in 2008-2009 when we finished second. That season Riera provided us width and that helped us stretching the teams. Alonso played a vital role in that side. Now we have replaced Riera with Downing, Alonso with Adam and Torres with Suarez. Also we have more depth now that we had in that season. That 2008-2009 side was tearing teams apart when they played attacking pass and move football. I am sure Kenny will get it right and we'll see similar kind of football again. All signs are there to expect it from King Kenny's boys.
