Ender's Game series..

After seeing the recommendations on here, I noted that this set of books received rave reviews and is right up there with the 'best Science Fiction'.

SO.. Based on recommendations here, I've bought the first four books. Started reading it yesterday and it's pretty compelling - about half way through so far and I like it.. Reminds me very much of Starship Troopers in many ways. Are the books after the first four worth reading as well? Never read this particular author (Quite strange for me seeing something I've never encountered in Science Fiction/Fantasy - so always brilliant to get to read new quality stuff)

Been a long time since i read these, think they were all worth a read.
Just looked on Wiki didn't realise they were still being produced so recently seem to have slotted in a couple of books after the first one.

From memory i think the Enders shadow books were also excellent with the first couple of them being every bit as good as the original series.

Could do with stumbling across something myself, recently read/listened too all of Alistair Reynolds and Richard Morgans stuff, could do with a decent series/author to start on.
Tried the Kevin J Anderson series but felt like it was being spun out and lost interest at about book five.

The tone is very different between the books. Enders Game is the stand out novel. I would read them in the published order, not the chronological order. After the original 4, it does tend to feel as if it is being milked. The other are enjoyable enough if you don't go in with too high expectations.

I'll echo SP. First four are worth it, after that...not as much. The first two in particular are very, very good, yet totally different.

Personally i preferred the first the first Shadow book over the latter of the ender series which as pointed out are very different, , i would agree  that the first one is the stand out book and the first of the shadow series returns to that subject/time.  I did start the shadow series a long while after i had read the original so perhaps that coloured my judgement

Read the first two Dreaming Void titles and have an audio version of the last one for my car that i will be listening to when i figure out where i put my mp3 player. Cheers for the Asher reccomendation i will give hime a go.

I didn't care for the Shadow books, particularly the first. To me he lessened the Ender character to promote Bean in the new book. And as I love the Ender character, it didn't sit well with me, really. I probably would have preferred it starting with the return to earth and the Hegemon struggles.

Andy on OSC in general, he has some good stuff out there, and can flip between science fiction and fantasy with ease. He's mormon, and a few of his things are allegories for teh book of mormon, which I find he does a bit heavy handed

I've somehow never read these either, going on my wishlist.


I'd recommend Ken MacLeod as another great, present day sci fi writer. The Engines of Light series in particular is very good.

Can't remember having issues with that but as i said perhaps the large timescale between me reading the series lessened that blow.
Saying that looking at the Wiki page i have not read the last one of the shadow series so perhaps i am remembering them more fondly than at the time.

I read a couple of his other series , Homecoming and Alvin Maker but found them a bit of a chore part way through.

On the subject of OSC. I read "The Lost Gate". Very light, but an enjoyable read. However, it is the sort of book that is probably best left until he finishes writing the whole series...

I've only ever read the first book. And I liked it. How was the second book compared to the first?

Not getting a chance to read much at the moment

Finished Ender's game thought it was good, but the ending was obvious about half way through. If he was building up to the surprise - it was a wasted journey!

Nearly finished the second - it's a lot better and really enjoying it Damn Piggies!! Yet to find the secret here - but again I think I've guessed it.

To be honest, I didn't see it coming until it was way too late (about 2-3 pages before the denouement), hence the enjoyment :P.

The Shadow Series (Bean's spinoff) was worth the read it does add to the story but it also takes away from Ender as aforementioned.

Overall OSC does a nice job with the series and I rather likes the Short Story that preceded the novels.

I am looking forward to the film but I have me reservations on if it will do justice to the story.
