What meats/exotic foods would you try.
« on: June 27, 2011, 07:45:57 pm »
Just going on from Imperators udderly useless topic  ;)

Meats. What would you be prepared to try. ?

In that question I pretty much mean, anything that walks, crawls, swims, or other. From cattle, fish, birds, to insects etc.

Now this could be quite subjective, depending on where you live, or were you were brought up in the world. Also, dependant on the customs of your family or community and heritage.

What some in the west would consider disgusting, would by some, deemed a delicacy in other part of the world.
Likewise, in some faiths, cows are considered sacred, where as in the West, we eat them on a daily basis.

Myself. I think that I would try pretty much anything...........once.
And when I say anything. I mean anything.

In my freezer at this moment is, Zebra, Kangaroo, Crocodile, and Blesbok.....as well as all of the usual chicken, ham, bacon, fish, etc. etc.

For the most part, I've not travelled in the East that much, so most of my travelling experiences of local cuisine, would be of the generally western tastes.
For the exotic stuff I've tried, I've eaten Horse in Japan. Crocodile, Emu,Kangaroo witchety grub etc in Oz, plus snake and a variety of insects (of unknown veriety), in China.

I'd love to try a bush-tucker trial, but don't know if I'd have the stomach for it. That said, I have no sense of smell, so would probably dive in anyway, just for the experience.

The funny thing about China, is that at the time I was there I didn't give it a second thought, but would of loved to of tried one of the specialist restaurants that do dog. Again, just for the experience.

From a UK point of view, we eat all of the usual things from Cows/cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry etc.
From a European point of view, that would be extended further, ie. Raindeer meat or other animals that were local to a region.
Worldwide, then maybe things like Whale meat*, or other meats that are specific to a cultural identity but would otherwise be shunned by the reast of the world, for one reason or another.

*Obviously, there's the huge worldwide problem of the trade in exotic meats and animals that are banned, or on the endangered species list, which would obviously be a no-no to almost every right thinking person, but woild be considered as a local staple diet by others, in some remote parts of the world.

And last but not least. The last taboo.

If in a situation, where you had to eat something......anything, just to stay alive.  Would you consider eating human flesh as an absolute last resort. ?

Should be some interesting smart arsed answers for this one, me thinks...... and I'm probably awaiting the soon to be altered 'custom' title.

Anyway.

What have you tried already, and what would you be prepared to try?

Id eat pretty much anything, just to try it. Got no moral problem with eating special animals.

In a life or death situation, of course I'd eat human flesh.

To be fair, the question is quite eronious.

Most people would say that, myself included, but the reality is, untill you were in that position, you would never know.

I mean.  Would you still tuck in, if it was your wife, child, or mother lying next to you. ?

Run that scenario through your mind, then answer the question again.

I would be willing to eat anything at all, from a moral point of view. I mean if I eat cow, then I've got no business telling someone else they can't eat chinchilla cos it's just tooooooooooooooo cute. And anyone who eats the former but wont eat the latter on moral or ethical grounds is a hypocrite plain and simple.

I may not eat something because it looks a bit weird or I'm repulsed by the idea but both ethically and morally I have no qualms about eating anything.

Rodents.

In the UK, a Guineapig is seen as a pet.

In Parts of South America, Guineapig on a stick is seen in the same light as we in th UK would view a toffee apple.

Hmm I voted anything that's not cute and furry but then I remembered they eat spiders and all sorts of weird shit in some parts of the world.
I ate crocodile and kangaroo in Australia and it was ok.  I think that's about as adventurous as I would get.

Although I remember an episode of That's Life where they went out and fed people snails eggs on crackers.  Most people ate it no bother until they were told what it was...

Will try anything really. Except if it smells bad, that's usually a sign not to eat it.

One of the docs went to Japan for a conference and I asked him to bring me something nice back, he brought me back what was supposedly candy made out of a chickens foot with what appeared to be cat food jelly round it. My nose did not like it.

Fucked up the Chinese. Anyone remember the excellent Clarkson programme on 'The French' - eating the sparrow drowned in Cointreau or something, devoured with a ritualisic affectation of a towel over his head. Sounded intoxicating. I like the French for that - anything that lives on or flies over their land they eat. The Chinese tho - there's just no full stop is there?

I'd scoff anything as long as it wasn't a cat or a dog or something fluffy.

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

What would be the most discusting substance you could imagine flavouring your wine with? Well, I’m sure baby mice would not come too far off?

Baby mice wine is a traditional Korean health drink, which is brewed by drowning alive baby mice, maximum three days old, in rice moonshine and letting them to ferment in the bottle for about a year. According to local Korean belief, mouse wine is a cure to just about any illness imaginable, includin asthma and liver problems among others.

If mice wine does not do the trick for you, do not forget to try out the Cobra Schnaps we reported on a few days ago!
