Not sure how Ayala did in his loan stint last season but he, to me, is a very good defender.

Wisdom didn't look comfortable on the ball in the second half and nervous. Its to be expected and was caught out badly with their 2nd goal with that little jinx....he would have learned from that. Ayala and Kelly got the same treatment against Thailand two years ago but came back stronger.

I am not judging him. I am basing my comments on what I saw from his performance. Nervous. Caught out of position.

Same thing happened to Ayala and Kelly not too long ago in a meaningless friendly against inferior opposition but they came back stronger.

From what I hear - we're keen on Dann but will not pay the 12m Brum want. Player wants to come to us hence why he hasn't joined Stoke yet but Stoke meeting the asking price is a little bit of a problem.

Brum will have to drop their price by nearly half for us to do business. Dann might have to put in a transfer request.

Didn't Riera insist on coming to us, not Everton, and so ensured we paid what we wanted to? Comolli likes players who seize the initiative (save him money and trouble) by assisting from their side.

Probably...that goal we conceded in the first half wouldn't have done him any favours...he could see the striker moving in behind Carra and was too late in responding. Not that I hold that against him or anything but...he probably needs more solid match time to get himself up and ready.

I can't say I've seen him play enough to judge. But if we are loaning rather than selling I hope there is a spark there.

Even when you have Agger, you can't count on having him; this is the whole problem. I think we need to bring in a quality CB this window and, unfortunately, that leads me to the inevitable conclusion of selling Agger. Comolli has already made it known that we will be valuing a player's fitness record which does not bode well for Daniel. I can't see the logic in keeping Agger and signing a new CB as that would mean one of Carra or Skrtel would have to be 4th choice for CB and Soto would be our 5th choice. That's a bit too much of a logjam for me (as you rightly point out we have no European football) and I can't see Carra or Skrtel being happy with that. Conversely, I can't see much logic in not signing anyone unless we are very confident that one of our youngsters is ready to perform at CB immediately (I am not). Based on Agger's history there is no way in hell we can count on a full season from him; it would be irresponsible to do so. That would mean that without signing another CB there we will be a point in the season where we are looking at a first choice pairing of Skrtel-Carra and Soto as third choice. Fowler forbid anything happens to one of Skrtel or Carra during the period when Agger is out and we could be looking at a first choice of Carra-Soto or Skrtel-Soto (either scares me to death for more than one game).

I just can't justify the allocation of wages and squad places for five veteran CBs and I dare not count on Agger giving us an injury-free season. The only solution I can rationally see is to cash in on Agger this summer and bring in a reliable, quality CB. I would love it to be a coup of a signing (Subotic/Hummels/Lovren), but frankly any solid CB that we can count on for 30+ league games (Dann, for instance) is probably an upgrade on our current situation. I would really hate selling Agger because he is such quality and a really good lad to boot, but the more and more I think about this situation I just can't see any other logical recourse for Kenny and Comolli.

I think if we could do exactly what we wanted we should sell Agger & Kyrgiakos and then pick up a class CB like Vertonghen and Dann as a backup. Of course to do that we'd need to be willing to spend another 20m on players.

Danny gets one last season to prove he can stay fit, we get a new lad in.
If he stays fit his choice to leave or if he wants to come back Carras a year older, Soto's contracts up and there's room in the squad.
If he wants to leave his value should climb after a full season playing as he's without doubt a class player with a fantastic attitude.

If not we cut our losses.

Whatever we do we need a reliable CB for next season adding whether It's Dann or anyone else.
