Would you agree though that on the whole we are producing/acquiring a better standard of young player nowadays as opposed to a few years ago? And therefore they would be more likely to be wanted by a Premier League club on loan. Flanagan as opposed to Darby, Sterling as opposed to Hammill, Shelvey to Spearing, Coady to Irwin, Morgan to Lindfield.

I'd say that pretty much across the board we're producing a better standard, a standard closer to being able to manage minutes for a club in this league. And I'd count Shelvey as one of them. I think he'd get minutes for a number of clubs and be an asset to them in doing so.

To be fair at some points i have done but im not so sure of it currently. There are of course some stand outs like Sterling, Suso and Flanagan but at the same time alot of the past youth players looked excellent at a young age too and it all came to nothing. I've yet to see a young centre back who imrpresses more than San Jose did or a striker whos more impressive than Dalla Valle and Nemeth were. For me there are some standouts and there are others who benefit largely from playing their football in a much more structured set-up, i think sometimes our fans become very carried away with the current crop of youngsters and more recently have retracted from this a bit. We do seem a more attractive club to the top youngsters these days though, i definately feel we have become better at acquiring talented youngsters.

I feel we have a good group of young players at present but they're nowhere near as good as some on here think. Some of the promising youngsters of past seasons are now deemed average while the current crop are looking impressive at the same kind of age as the formers did. I try not to get over excited about young players, people seem to pile endless pressure on them and expect madness from them at such tender ages then the second they dont keep up the great starts they achieve they're suddenly 'not gonna make it'. I still feel we are behind teams like Man u and Arsenal in terms of our youth teams players ability.

I think there are some stand out players in this current crop that are superior to past youngsters at the club but there are also some from the past groups that showed just as much if not more promise.

In direct comparison to players that have come through we are producing superior players on a whole but in comparison to players bought sometimes they dont seem to be better at this stage

Nice, be good for him to get some game time.
You have posted literally nothing of substance to flame about.  Your "points", and I dread to call them that, were superficial and completely arbitrary.  Nothing you said could be argued against because nothing you said elaborated a position of any kind.

He'll do well for them IMO, could possibly do the same job for them that Adam did, i.e. be the main focul point in the midfield.

Overall, a good move all round.

I would have preferred to see him go to a Premier League club, but of the Championship clubs the likes of Blackpool and Brighton would have been my preference purely because of the style of football that they look to play, which will hopefully be in sync in many ways with our own.

I'll be keeping an eye out for Blackpool games and highlights now.

Hmmm, when we sold Meireles everybody was saying that we have Shelvey and he needs games and he is a brilliant talent. And he could be all that but anyone getting the feeling we suddenly are short of midfielders!?

Its not the Prem, but its a good move for him. And most importantly a good fit. Club and manager (although im not personally a fan) should do his progression the world of good.

Good move for Jonjo, I hope he gets the playing time he needs to further develop his game. But I'm surprised that we were willing to deal with Blackpool again after the Adam transfer saga...

I agree... I wanted him to be loaned out in the summer, to gain some first team experience, but then we sold Meireles the attitude was "oh well, looks  like he'll have to step up sooner than expected"... Not exactly short of midfielders, but we don't have 2 for every position anymore! 7 for 4... If we get a couple of injuries we'll notice it alright! Hope we can recall him on short notice if needs be

Anyone got any idea how long the loan is? 'til the end of the season?

Good for him to get more game time. Will be keeping an eye out for Blackpool games now. Suppose we can just recall him anyway if we become a bit short in central midfield through injuries/suspensions.

Well, Gerrard is just coming back from injury, and that virtually closes one position permanently. Perhaps that has driven the timing of the loan. Plus we have Maxi, who is underutilized to say the least and Kuyt, who we may see more of alongside Gerrard now that he's back. Plus, we don't have the extra load of European games, so I don't think that we are short on midfielders.

Think that is all sorted now.

It's in both Liverpool and Blackpool's interest to have a good business relationship.

Good move for Jonjo, dont know why we waited for so long to loan him out!

I actually dont have much against the blackpool board/managment. Yeah they held out for ages and fucked Charlie Adam around.. but what would you expect them to do really. If it was a big club coming after Suarez and Kenny did the same in trying to get the best price out of him then we would all be obviously happy.

Should be a great move for him, as hopefully Holloway will use him exactly the same way he used Adam. It's exactly how Shelvey needs to be played, put him alongside Barry Ferguson and hopefully they can perform as well as Vaughan and Adam did for them.

or we're going to move in january.

i think they club have just made the calculated decision that shelvey's game time will be limited compared to the more pragmatic offering that is spearing.

gerrard must be coming back to full fitness and we have henderson who can play in the middle though perhaps we'd lack bite.

he has something but failed to sparkle in the next gen game - i know he has been said to have been ill that night - and that puts him a distance from the first team.

better that he's playing and learning than being stuck between reserves and the edge of the first team squad.

Loan move confirmed:

Quote
Liverpool have confirmed Jonjo Shelvey has joined Blackpool on loan until December 31, 2011.

The 19-year-old will spend the remainder of the year with Ian Holloway's Championship side and could make his debut against Bristol City on Saturday.

Shelvey has made 22 first-team appearances for Liverpool since moving to Anfield from Charlton Athletic in May 2010.

I think this loan move is an excellent idea for the lad. He's not really shown enough in our first-team yet to suggest that we could genuinely rely on him if we had a few injuries, so a step down to the Championship with less pressure and expectation is a good plan.

He came straight from League One as a kid and could not be expected to continue his progression at that rate playing here and there in cup games for us.

I have some misgivings about this loan - I think Jonjo suffered from a period during which his belief in himself and expectations for future playing time were backed up with playng time, and then when he proved to be well down the pecking order come the new season it showed.  His poor attitude during the Sporting match demonstrates that he may have developed a bit of an ego, which can be a good thing, but not necessarily at his age when he still has so much work to do.  To me, I think this might be a negative indictment of the player and where we believe him to be in his development, in terms of ability and maturity.  He's a very cultured midfielder at his best, and I had hoped to see him grow into the role backing up Adam with an eye to eventually replacing him as the deep-lying playmaker, but I'm not sure this move indicates that the club see him as that much of a sure thing as maybe they once did.  With us continuing in the Carling and with the FA Cup and a long season in front of us, he would have gotten games for us, or at least should have, so while playing for Blackpool could help him develop faster, if he doesn't play week in/week out, I think he'll go backward or really only stay at that sort of Championship level.  In which case, this is just a move to try to sell him.

Of course, that's just my cynical take, because I'm really shocked with how little depth we now have in the MF compared to a month ago.  Spearing is our 4th/5th choice midfielder, with Coady I suppose 6th.  That's a big step down from Meireles as our 4th, Henderson as 5th and Shelvey as 6th, with Gerrard, Lucas and Adam ahead of them (not to mention Aquilani).

Great move for the lad. Only a short trip from Liverpool to Blackpool and he has Ince and Bruna to help him settle (and hopefully they will not persuade him to make the move permanent).

I would like to see Wilson loaned somewhere, he is never going to break onto our bench, let alone our first team as things stand.

Yeah, I agree. If you break it down, it could look like this:

Centre Midfield (2 spots): Gerrard, Lucas, Adam, Spearing
Left Midfield/Wing: Downing, Maxi
Right Midfield/Wing: Henderson, Kuyt
Forwards (2 spots): Suarez, Carrol, Bellamy

And several of those can play in other positions as well: Downing and Maxi on both flanks, Kuyt up front, Henderson in the centre, Bellamy on the wings, Gerrard...everywhere.

11 players for 6 positions should be adequate in a season without european football.

So we can asses the situation and decide whether we want him to come back, stay there or maybe go to a Premier League club for the remainder of the season.
