Sussex 108 for 1 at lunch versus Lancashire.

Hopefully not a sign of things to come for the rest of the summer.

Noticed a few Kent & Essex supporters knocking around in this thread. Kent are 95 for 4 at lunch. Sam Northeast is 35 not out. He looks a great propsect, heard loads of promising things about him for the last few years from people associated with cricket in Kent. Think this could be his breakthrough season.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

I guess the equivalent is him signing for a lower premier league team like wigan. So he must still be very decent in relative terms! Does he bat or bowl?

He bowled for the Army and Combined Services. He's playing cricket in the summer and going to the Army in the winter now.

I assume he's not in Gloucs starting XI for today:

Dent, Cockbain, Coughtrie, Taylor, Gidman (C), Batty (W), Gidman, Lewis, Saxelby, Norwell, Payne

Nah, he said on Facebook earlier that he hadn't been picked. David Wade's his name.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given it's early April, bowlers seem to be on top on day one.

Lancs have now got Sussex 160-5, 3 wickets for Chapple.

A few familiar names knocking around though - Gatting is batting for Sussex (any relation to the fat one?) and Topley has a couple of wickets for Essex - not the Don surely? Add in Bairstow or Yorkshire, it seems like cricket is popular for lots of father and son combos.

That is Don Topley's lad.

Bluey's boy is a good 'little' (he's about 6ft 5) player. Flame haired like his dad and gives it some biff like him too. i played regularly against David. Was a fiercely competitive bloke. Still can't believe he killed himself. I shouldn't be though. Did you know cricketers are four times more likely than your average male to kill themselves? True. Something about the game that breeds introspection and brooding.

On a lighter note, I went to my first outdoor nets in God knows how long last night. Coming out of semi-retirement. Tried a bit hard to keep up with the young uns. Feels like one leg is six inches shorter than the other today. Effing ouch. Have had to take some Nurofen and I'm looking forward to smashing back the boozies later to help dull the pain. It'll be worse tomorrow too.

Sussex all out 243. Chapple took 5 wickets.

Apparently (i.e. according to Wikipedia) Gatting is Mike's nephew. He top-scored with 90.

Not the best of days for Essex. Started off ok bowling Kent out for 247 then finish 49/6 with Cook getting 6 & Bopara a duck.

Well done to the young lad Northeast for Kent hit 112. Worth keeping an eye on. Any Kent fans know much about him?

I remember Michael Atherton being very impressed by young Northeast last year, rated him very highly.

One to keep an eye on,methinks.

Mentioned him earlier in the thread. Not a Kent fan myself but know a few people who play in the local cricket leagues down there. Few of them have been raving about him for the last 2 to 3 years. Think he played/plays for Sandwich. Know a few of the lads there and they reckoned he'd have a good chance of international honours. Said this before he made his Kent debut. Sounds like a good lad by all accounts as well.

Got the Junior membership for LCCC and must say it has to be the best investment ever made. Ł15. Free access to all of the games this season (usually Ł5 a day). You're allowed in the Pavillion and all members areas. You get a free entry to one day junior ticket and a free entry to one day adult ticket which both also have Pavillion access. These memberships go right up to the age of 18. The card is also easy to pass back. ;)

Did you go today?

Sounded like a good century by Brown. Will do the lad's confidence the world of good. A talented player who has been looking to break into the first XI for the last 18 months or so.

I am a Lancs supporter. I've been a Lancs fan ever since our glory days in the 90's in the one day competitions.

I think we will struggle this season but I also think we will surprise a few people. Brown is a good player and hopefully this is his break out year. Chilton wasn't a very good captain, but as a middle order batsman he is solid enough for us and regularly gets us out of trouble. Moore is another good player, looking to regain his confidence after his injury troubles. I like Paul Horton a lot, he is my favourite Lancs player at the moment and I believe with a bit more confidence he can go on to the next level. From good county cricket player to very good county cricket player. However His partnership with Moore is a solid one and one that can save us out of relegation. Cross I am unsure about, however I never rated Luke Sutton and I want to give Cross a season to see how he does.

Our bowling imo is the stronger of the 2 departments. Chapple and Mahmood are both excellent bowlers (in county cricket terms) and both are always dangerous. Though we will need to replace the bowler Chapple soon as he is 37 so he has what another year, 2 years tops. They can also both bat/slog as well which makes them even better. Keedy is still our main spin bowler, but he is always effective and economic as well. Newby and Smith also can take wickets.

I don't think our team is even good enough to challenge for any trophies this year, but certainly I do believe we are more than good enough to escape relegation. Warwicks, Sussex and Worcs are the teams I think we will be competing against in a relegation battle.

The game is Set up nicely for tomorrow anyway. Hopefully Lancs can get a 150-200 lead then knock off a fair few Sussex batsman before they over haul the first innings deficit.

Enjoy tomorrow anyway mate.

Recovered to make a game off it 201 all out , with Kent 140 odd for 3. Try & get a draw

Lancs could do with a few early wickets against Sussex who are about 70 behind in the 2nd Innings with 7 wickets left. Surprise surprise, the start is delayed by rain. Start as you mean to go on!

Can't believe it's raining -  perfect blue sky down here in the South East.

Even if play is only lost till lunch think it will be a hard task for Lancs to push for victory with only 2 sessions remaining.

Same every year isn't it? Win a few, get scuppered by the weather a couple of times, fail to win one by being unable to bowl the opposition out twice and before you know it it's mid-table mediocrity again.
