Hope that is just a small  pull or a tweak of his muscle, he could a massive asset for the second leg and second half of our season.

What a difference when he went off. Obvious was no one to keep the ball on the go and attacking the other team.

Glad to hear it doesn't look too bad. Heart went out to him last night when he pulled up. He's not had much luck. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

As much as i love Jay, i can't help but think that it wasn't just him going off that made the difference but also Nasri coming on and city having 11 players again, instead of Ballotelli acting the gobshite. Adam and Henderson and Gerrard did a good job but were under pressure when Nasri came on and rendered the attacking options redundant. I thought we had no width and everything was just hoofed to Caroll. I do think this was the tactic though. Hope he gets back soon, we do need him.

The game changed when Wee Jay went off.

We lost our shape in midfield and couldn't find anyone to do the job properly. Hope it is not too bad and he is fit for the second leg because we will need him. It's not so important v Stoke as we will play 4-4-2 probably but the return leg he is a must.

Wouldn't say the game changed cause Jay went off I would say the game changed cause Nasri came on.

Think it was always our game plan to try go 1 up and defend that lead just like it was when we played them a few weeks ago but Downing missed that chance.

Zonal Marking noted this when we played City. They said something along the lines of 'Spearing is excellent when he has a player to pick up but his positioning is questionable - as shown by him letting Aguero go for the first goal that should have never happened.

That said, his passing has always been excellent. Move him up the field or put him in a pivot with Lucas and you have an excellent midfield right there.

I would consider that goal to be Kuyt and Reina's fault primarily. Kuyt gave away the ball in a ridiculous position, Silva played a first time pass to Agüero and Reina let his shot dip under his body. Blaming Jay for that is nit picking. If he was out of position it was because we were supposed to still have the ball!

Either way, I'm sure his positioning will improve as practically every aspect of his game has.

I don't think Nasri had that big an effect although he was an improvement on a disinterested Balotelli. City pressurized us very well on the ball and in the second half we simply failed to keep hold of it, with practically every being guilty. If you have no easy outball (and no striker able to hold up the ball) this will happen. After about 60 minutes we just decided to give up on trying to keep it I think because we didn't commit any players forward to support the man in possession.

Nasri meant they had more men in midfield meaning that they will have the ball more.

Just think our game plan was to defend the 1-0 lead no matter who was on the pitch for us yesterday.

Seemed like we were defending at the Nou Camp again second half. Pressurized, yet strangely comfortable.

Nasri coming on made a difference, but only because we had no one to pick him up in midfield. They were just strolling past our midfield trio (even Stevie who's not quite upto speed of course). But Adam and Henderson we know are defensively inept.

Jays marshalled better players than Samir Fucking Nasri, and had he been on, I reckon we'd have controlled things a lot more in the second half.

We need a strong defensive presence in midfield even against the poorer reams (see Blackburn at Anfield). If Jays not fit, I reckon we'd need to see Agger step forward for a bit, because with both our defensive midfielders out, we will lose goals.

Disagree. Nasri wasn't particularly effective anyway - didn't even notice him. I said in the commentary - Adam going for a glory ball from kickoff in the second half was a great example of why Spearing was missed, because there was a lack of trying to keep things simple - and keeping things simple was how we owned the first half. For a while, Adam did keep it simple, but I think there might be a measure of overconfidence in him that says he'll be able to pull off all the long balls he attempts - not even the best passers can ping long balls constantly to feet.
I know what you mean. I really wish the Madrid born former Real Vallodolid, Osasuna, Tenerife, Extremadura, Valencia and Inter Milan manager stayed loyal and faithful to a foreign club that sacked him by never managing another club again. Burn him.

Hope it's not serious, this leaves gerrard as our only midfielder that can perform some sort of tackle.

As soon as he went off for Adam I said it would all "fall to bits" which was a bit of an overexaggeration but the game did change dramatically. When was the Nasri substitution? Not till later?

Anyway, Adam and Gerrard in the middle, both wandering players...within a minute of Adam coming on he'd left a huge hole between midfield and defence.

We need Spearing back sharpish.

In that midfield set-up, Speo offered more defensively and in terms of attack than Adam. I'm not having a go at Adam either, but jay's presence gave Stevie a bit of license going forward as he knew he'd tuck in defensively and his quick turnover of the ball helped the team too. Obviously we'd started to 'shut up shop' a bit after the goal but as soon as he went off and Adam came on, we seemed to regress another 10 yards back and struggled to keep the ball for long spells. Great little player, hope he's back soon!

His medium-long range passing is excellent.  Has a very good sense for when to hold it and when to let it go.

a big "phew!" for Spearing. glad he came off when he did rather than make the injury worse.

but Stoke will be difficult. we will need a battler to get the ball and pass it onto our pacey players.

I hope he is not out long. Our best current midfield is Spearing, Henderson and Gerrard.

The best indicator of what Jay means to us is how we set-up in the 2nd half at Manchester and for the whole Stoke match.

I hope he is not out long.

People talk about 'moneyball'. Jay is money.

Lucas>Spearing>Coady>Adam

Don't know what Kenny was thinking using Adam as a defensive shield without having Gerrard give him a hand. Adam is both unwilling and incapable of staying in positon
