If we carry on playing like we did - remembering we now have the 'luxury' of no European distractions, unlike Spurs - then i have no doubt that 5th is within reach but like most have said 4th does seem out of reach.  Never say never  ;)

im actually convinced we will get 5th, my coupon never wins me money, my predictions are wrong more than they are right but, come the end of the season, i think we will be 5th... looking at fixtures, Manchester City and spurs have it tougher than us and the fact we play them both at home is a bonus indeed. and they play each other so fingers crossed for a draw.niether team has had proper pressure during a run in so you never know. imagine we get 4th?? ooooftttt

Luis Suarez is a monster of a footballer.

Had to get that out now Im finally registered.
   After yesterdays impressive result (and performance) against Sunderland, there was one thing going through my mind:
   "This is the year of the hungry man
   whose place is in the past
    hand in hand with ignorance and legitimate excuses"

You may remember L6 Red's uplifting, fantastic post before the 08/09 season. I remember having this post recommended to me

on the .tv forums (it may have had its own thread but i'm not sure). The optimism I felt after reading that post brought a

childish grimace across my face, it's not like I wasnt optimistic anyway but having it put into words that gave me a testicular

twinge when I thought of what they would mean if shown true, only added to the excitement.

I now feel more excited about next season than I did then.

'Praying for Time' was the single peaking the charts when Liverpool last won the League Championship, and there might just be

another apt song title on another significant date for us to get all smiley and proud about. Despite being sung by a very good

looking woman 'Whats My Name' was the #1 single on the 9th January 2011, the day the King Kenny Dalglish took the reigns

once again at Liverpool Football Club. Certainly Carlo Ancelotti, Mr Alex Ferguson, Steve Brucehead or Tony Pulis can all answer

that question now. In fairness to the Managers of the premier league, the return of the king has been met with respect and

admiration by the majority. Its no coincidence really that the experts who decided (without having managed a game) that

Kenny had been out of touch with football for too long and hadnt kept up with the supposed 'drastic' changes that the game

has gone through, all belong to the pool of knowledge that is Rupert Murdoch's empire. They would argue that we are in our

honeymoon period and that the wool will soon start to come undone, Those that love Liverpool Football Club know different,

and those that love Liverpool Football Club, know football.

   The men that own Liverpool now seem to be the anti-Hicks and anti-Gillett, underpromising and overachieving are

terms that they bang about much in the same way that 'Snoogydoogy' and '60 days' were banged about by the two helmets

that used to own us. They appear to be very shrewd businessmen who can actually have the best interests of the club at

heart. The speed in which they reacted after Torres handed in his transfer request (Carroll being given the number 9 before

Torres's departure was official) is a testament to that IMO. They have engaged with the fans, answered live and difficult

questions on air directly from the fans, Cleared all of the debt, gotten rid of Hodgson (In the right way) brought Kenny Dalglish

back as caretaker manager. Time will tell with all of the above, but the key for me at the moment is how united the club feels.

Pepe Reina giving slight hints he may be looking elsewhere is the only real element of instability at the club right now. The

owners are happy with Kenny, Kenny is happy with the players, new players looking good. The drunk Steven Gerrard

celebration against Sparta Prague. Its all moving in the right direction and everyone is totally committed on getting Liverpool

back to the top. The very top.

And there we sit, since Kenny Dalglish took over again this is how it looks.
Not bad at all.

Now I could go on all night about not having a playing ethos, what Suarez will be like and how much we should spend in the

summer.  What is most important for me is we now have a basis to build on, a mentality. There has been a change coming for a

while and the past year there have been times I have felt so embarassed to be a Liverpool supporter, no fuck that, its been

going on for much longer than a year and now its actually over. We now have what we have wanted for so long, a vision, a

clear path. I dont want to be hearing "In my 35 years im management....." or "I didnt say 60 days, that was George", we want

to hear the owners say nothing unless they are asked or in club statements, we want the management to be saying that 6th,

is not just do-able, but a sodding insult to the club, and we want the players to keep thier faces out the media and speak when

spoken to. And for the first time in as long as I can remember, I think we can achieve this genuinely. Some fans from other clubs

have a laugh at our expense how comparable we are as the 'England' of domestic football (in terms of every year being our

year) and I have nothing to retort except I have not felt it was our year since L6's post. I was going to go into more detail

about L6's post being brilliant but moot, as two key components from his argument did not come to fruition (Barry, Keane) but I

dont think its important. What is important is that I personally have that feeling back from when I first read it, blind optimism,

and I say blind because I certainly wont be watching what any other teams are doing in the summer. In a way I hope that

United get thier 19th title this season so we can get this monkey off our back and move on. Besides we can always laugh at

them only ever overtaking us for one season in history, because we have them shaken and next season they are getting it

from all angles. John Henry, Kenny Dalglish, Me, You, Steven Gerrard, George Sephton every single person involved with the

club is going to be gunning, not just for United, but for all of them. And they wont know whats fucking hit them.

Looking forward to the banter.

Spurs will be distracted for the two games against Madrid and hopefully will drop points after those games, they still have City and Arse to play so hopefully the gap will be narrower by the time they come to Anfield.
I though cant see them getting past Real Madrid so it will only be those two games when we need to close the gap.
4th will be a miracle.
All to play for...

Excellent post. We need more of this.

Think how close we came in 08/09, and what would have been had the take over happened that summer, and not 18 months later? United and Chelsea are not the teams they were. For all their millions, City are not a real true force (yet), and Spurs are still inconsistent.

Unfortunately, we can't change the past, what's done is done. But we are set up to go forward, and I too am looking forward to next season.

It's highly unlikely that both of City and Spurs will falter enough to allow us to get 4th.

5th is very attainable however, and I see Spurs' run-in being the hardest including Chelsea, Arsenal, City and then away to us, not to mention how much the Madrid games will undoubtedly take out of them.

am i right in looking at it this way...... we still have to play both, and whilst winning both will be difficult, if we were to win them, then the current table plus our two games (for GD ive got us winning each 1-0), would look like this

                                 p     gd   points
4   Man City            31    17    53
5    Liverpool         32    7    51
6    Tottenham       30    6    49

with city still to play spurs then we'd still be right in the mix....

or am i missing something here?

potentially 6 points (gd) behind city with 6 games to go. Would expect city to get it, esp with us having to go the library, but we'd still be up there. And i can genuiney see us beating both spurs and city - maybe not arsenal though

But...you're supposed to agree with the facts and stats. That's pretty much what you go by all the time. Why's this not believable?
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

To be honest right now i dont think we should even be contemplating getting fourth. Dont get me wrong it would be amazing if we did make it, but we really should be realistically aiming for a fifth place finish. Top four should not really be talked about anymore although while it still remains mathematically possible, we can still dream.

I don't agree at all,  if we're aming for 5th why not 4th?? Why does it make any difference? We should actually be aiming for 1st!!!

It's highly unlikely that both of City and Spurs will falter enough to allow us to get 4th.

I have checked the form table since the turn of the year ... In average points per game, this is how it looks:

LFC = 1.92 ppg
Spurs = 1.60 ppg
City = 1.50 ppg

If you translate this into projected points from the remaining matches, it goes something like this:

City: 53 + 12 = 65 points
Spurs: 49 + 14 = 63 points
LFC: 45 + 15.5 = 60.5 points

So, if you calculate our chances based on the 3 teams' form over the past 3 months, we are still falling a little bit short ... However, the fact that both teams are coming to Anfield, combined with the fact that they have cup matches disturbances, gives us a very realistic chance of reaching the 4th spot ...

It'd be nice if you gave me credit for bringing something to everyone's attention, even though I don't agree with it, without a sarky comment......get's you pissed off, not the best route for good discourse

It wasn't sarcastic.

You've rubbished the idea from the first days of this thread. You've done that based on your stats and calculations. Now you've posted a story about Liverpool finishing 4th based on stats and calculations and have said you don't agree with it. I'm just curious as to how that can be, seeing as everything you've said in here, to back up your view, has been based on those very things.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

                                  p     gd   points
4   Man City               31    17    53
5    Liverpool         32    7    51
6    Tottenham       30    6    49

with city still to play spurs then we'd still be right in the mix....

or am i missing something here?

Not missing anything, and the table suddenly looks a lot better!

That's a good post, but if you take it from the 17th of Jan, which is when Kenny's team really started, it looks like this: -

LFC = 2.38 ppg
Spurs = 1.71 ppg
City = 1.14 ppg

Which translates as: -

City: 53 + 9.12 = 62 points
Spurs: 49 + 15.39 = 64 points
LFC: 45 + 19.4 = 64 points

We'd get 4th on goal difference. 8)

If you want a sample only over Kenny's reign, you would have to take into consideration the Blackpool match ... A form table from 12th of January until 31st of March would look like this ...

http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/2010-2011/custom-table

LFC = 2.00 ppg
Spurs = 1.63 ppg
City = 1.38 ppg

Which translates into:

City: 53 + 11.04 = 64 points
Spurs: 49 + 14.67 = 64 points
LFC: 45 + 16.00 = 61 points

We are still a bit short, but with both teams coming to Anfield, and with their FA Cup/CL matches, we have a very realistic chance of finishing 4th ...

I don't think you can fairly base it on points per game since (insert date here) as we've all played different teams in that timeframe etc..
IMO, I think it's better to predict the realistic points gained from the remaining games. Sadly I see us falling 1 point short of 4th place behind City but gaining 5th place. Looking at my predictions, it seems we'd need Spurs to beat City in order to gain that 4th spot - you never know....and Yes I do think we can finish the season as strong as that!

CITY PREM GAMES LEFT:

Man City v Sunderland - 3
Liverpool v Man City - 0
Blackburn v Man City - 3
Man City v West Ham - 3
Everton v Man City - 1
Man City v Tottenham - 1
Man City v Stoke - 3
Bolton v Man City – 1
Total: 15 + 53 = 68pts

SPURS PREM GAMES LEFT:

Wigan v Tottenham - 3
Tottenham v Stoke – 1 (between RM in CL)
Tottenham v Arsenal - 1
Tottenham v West Brom - 3
Chelsea v Tottenham - 0
Tottenham v Blackpool - 3
Man City v Tottenham - 1
Liverpool v Tottenham - 0
Tottenham v Birmingham – 3
Total: 15 + 49 = 64pts

OUR PREM GAMES LEFT:

West Brom v Liverpool - 3
Liverpool v Man City - 3
Arsenal v Liverpool - 1
Liverpool v Birmingham - 3
Liverpool v Newcastle - 3
Fulham v Liverpool - 3
Liverpool v Tottenham - 3
Aston Villa v Liverpool – 3
Total: 22 + 45 = 67pts

But your method is just based on guess work, not like our scientific statistical method which is bound to be accurate. :D

Besides, we have played Chelsea and ManU in that time, so take your point, but....

So another way of looking at what to expect is to look at how well we did in the equivalent matches last year - when we ended the  season on 63 points.

Based on last year's results of the same games, we would get 12 points.

Football fans must think with logic quite simply statistics say we can not finish 4th simple !their more then often right. no point getting your hopes only to be disappointed.

Spot on.

Until it's mathematically impossible to get 4th we shouldn't give up on it.

Joke about it, laugh off the possibility, but deep down live in hope that we MIGHT just pull it off. After the season we've had I would have thought most people are best friends with the word 'hope'.

Lets just face it now, no way were finishing 4th or 5th, season over as far as i'm concerned. Far too inconsistent, can smash the mancs one day, then get done by WBA the next. Plus look at the injuries to our defence, Johnson, Kelly, Aurelio, Agger all possibly out for the rest of the season.

Fuck this season, buy up in the summer, sort the squad out and surely next season cant be any worse than this one.
