He said at the time, so it was definitely above £32.5m. The first offer was £30m, and the secondon was "substantially higher", so it wasn't just over the record either. Spurs had already offered £25m in this window, which is why your opening offer was higher. All this shit about being forced out is bollocks, he signed a new contract a not long ago, after he started scoring goals this season, and asked for another one yesterday, saying he'd leave if he didn't get what he wanted. Well fuck you, you money grabbing c*nt. A few journo's have tweeted that he's now on 5 times hat he earned at Newcastle, which would put him on 100/125k if they're accurate (probably not).

No player is forced to leave. Bullshit PR, from him, and Pardew/Ashley.

Haha don't make the same mistake as you did with Torres. If he left his hometown club, he sure as hell don't give a fuck about you either.

Has he bollocks been 'forced out'.

He is trying to ensure the isn't blamed for the move my NUFC fan. Doesn't want to be called a sell-out etc.

I have no doubt Andy C is very excited about this move and can't wait to pull on the red jersey alongside Stevie, Jamie and co as soon as possible.

true, if He didn't want to leave he wouldn't show up for e medical and refuse any negotiations, especially with so little time left of the transfer window.

I reckon you've pulled off a great deal.. Carroll and Suarez are gonna be a menace.. Dalglish has shown great leadership and ba*ls to go for these two big signings.

I wish my team had the ambition to sign the striker we needed instead of a rag tag bid for Charlie Adam at 10.59pm fuuuuumming.

Anyway..looking forward to seeing your new look attack, attack..... attack attack attack!

I occasionally read a Fulham blog written by an American fan living in London.  He knows a bit about the whole moneyball thing and offers this piece on the Carroll signing.  Well worth a read:

http://cravencottagenewsround.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/so-much-for-moneyball/

The thing with that is he makes some gross over simplifications. Torres was a great player? Now is just good? Carrolls skills will evolve with age? Carroll is worth lots in shirt sales? Really? Anywhere near as much as Torres?

People asking if our former no. 9 is playing on sunday (taken from rentboys offal site):

It appears your first game will be at Stamford Bridge on Sunday against Liverpool.
It is like the destiny. It is not perfect for me but we will see what happens and I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level. I will never say anything bad about Liverpool, I have been very happy there, but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea. If I have the chance to play I will do my best for Chelsea and hopefully I can score.

He signed a contract 3 months ago! 3 months!! Next thing he wants to be the highest paid player at the club. We're all slagging Torres for not honoring his contract so why is this different?

No one dragged him kicking and screaming onto the plane, and he doesn't look to have handcuffs on during his medical to stop him doing a runner.

I think there is a bit of face saving from both sides going on here.

Carroll was loved by Toon fans (think their version of Torres) and they never thought he would leave.  He is being a wuss and trying to say he had no option.

NUFC are saying it was all his idea and they didnt want to sell him depsite they have cashed the cheque already.

All a bit of nonsense.

The thing that I don't get is why we started the bidding at £30m?

OK, we desperately wanted him, but surely it would make sense to start low?

According to Marcotti we started at £18m, then £25m and so on.

No idea if that's true or not but it would mean we practically doubled our opening offer through the day. Bit desperate. I guess that's the situation the PR loving turncoat left the club in though.

All a bit of nonsense.

Pretty much. Carroll not wanting to come across like he shafted the Newcastle fans and Ashley making it seem like he had no choice - because if he sold him on the sly they would be baying for his blood. They're not particularly fond of him as it is.

I can't wait until the football starts again.

Dont get me wrong I think he's a player, and just what we need, but the fact he was so open about not wanting to leave Newcastle has me a tad worried. Is all. I dont think thats an unreasonable concern.
He, according to him, was forced out because of the fee.
That just doesnt quite sit right with me, but of course I'll back him as Im sure we all will, whole heartedly.

Hadn't heard of the £18m offer. But if it's also true that Newcastle were offering Carroll for £30m a couple of weeks ago, a cheeky bid below £20m was worth a shot; though probably not when it was clear we were getting £40m-£50m for Torres.

Difficult to know what to believe, but a good starting point is to not believe anything Mike Ashley says.

Let's say Carroll was tempted by the Liverpool approach but would stay at Newcastle if he got a new contract (yes, just 3 months after the last one). I'm not bothered, to be honest. I'm far too old and not naive enough to believe that every signing has to have been wearing an armband that said he was a red since he was 3 years old, or whatever. He's our player now and will want to prove himself. Ultimately, if we're winning things, we're one of the biggest clubs financially and can reward success appropriately. Whether it's success or money he wants, he can have both if he performs to the level we want.
Today, truth.
