this is mind blowing. David Villa cost Barcelona £35m
What age was David Villa when he signed? 29? 30?

Fuck this "35 million for so and so" when *enter said big name here* is worth such and such. Fact is, Carrol is English, which is going to raise the price by a few million. He's very young, as are the rest of our targets we are going for. The lad has no issues scoring in the league. What's the problem with the price? Who gives a toss when this lad could potentially be leading the line for years to come, not to mention the rest of the young talent that will rejuvenate our side. We're building a team, not a team of big name individuals. I think it's exciting as fuck. Torres will rue the day.

This is the price you have to pay when your top striker decides to fuck off with less than two days of the transfer window left.

Thanks for fuck all there Nando.

£35 mil and Carrol or save the money and be left with David Ngog

On a positive note, Carroll looks the real deal even if he is coming with baggage.

I am very excited by this. I think he is just what we need. Don't care about the price, that's for NESV to worry about.

As things stand, we're spending the £50m from Torres on Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam. Yeah?

Just making sure before I blow my fucking head off.

I would assume so.

OK, I understand the deal will go through. Welcome to Andy and I hope he does well. I mean it, best of luck to the lad. He'll need it.

Find it very hard to be excited about it. It's so depressing. We've been robbed big time. Torres out and Carroll in? Seriously?! I am extremely disappointed and I see it as a massive step backwards. I fear this is going to be the biggest waste of money this club has ever made. For this fee we could have gone for Pato, Pastore, Llorente, Aguero,... That's without considering for example Forlan or even RvN for a short term job. We're the only club in the world that would consider paying this much for Carroll and it says more about us than it says about everybody else. We were desperate and hence we pay some 20M too much (I expect the fee to be 35M).

And here is what I think we have the right to expect when we spend this much:
20 goals/season. That he's an almost guaranteed 1st pick, except for when he's injured and the odd game when he needs a rest. I'll be fair to him and let him get used to the team for the rest of the season. Next season, he has to deliver. No ifs, no buts, he has to deliver. That's why we signed him for a record fee.

Unfortunately you're going to have to spend crazy money these days to get back to the top. We haven't until recently and look where we are now compared to others who have spent big.

A lot of you should be thankful we're actually spending money for ourselves and not RBS

We needed a striker, Carroll was clearly the clubs first choice.

Yes, it's a lot of money but it's pretty clear Newcastle weren't going to sell for anything else. He may not have an exotic name but he's a very good player and at only 22 has the potential to be playing for us, and the national team, for the next 10 years.

Besides. Every deal is a gamble. Chelsea will be feeling pretty short changed if Torres continues his 2009-2011 form for them.

Drogba, Eto'o, Zlatan, Torres, Villa, Rooney, Van Persie, Anelka, Pato, Pazzini, Benzema and Cavani all cost less to sign than Carroll.
They wouldn't now though, relative value and January transfer window an all that. I'm sure we'd all have liked to keep Torres and we'd have probably grumbled and groaned when we lost out at the last minute on deals like Suarez and Adam. Overpriced yes, but a quality player nontheless.

Drogba, Eto'o, Zlatan, Torres, Villa, Rooney, Van Persie, Anelka, Pato, Pazzini, Benzema and Cavani all cost less to sign than Carroll.

This.

Is.

Mental.

You need to adjust those prices for inflation etc, plus factor in wages. Carroll will be on significantly less than any of those names mentioned.

Yes it's a mental transfer fee, but fuck it, it's nice to see us throwing some money around for a change. It's a statement of intent that might go badly wrong, but I'd rather we risked it than played safe forever. It's not like we're spending money we don't have.

I personally reckon Carroll + Suarez will be a better partnership than Torres + Suarez.

Torres great player but is a lone ranger.  He gets the ball, wants to turn and run at defenders when sometimes it is better to hold up the ball and link the play.

Suarez is a player that will work well with a proper target man so on paper it is a better fit.

This. I actually feel sick at the thought. Unbelievable that we were offering a club record £35m-plus for a striker and there I was, not alone clearly, praying for it to fall through. There's still the medical though. Come on Peter Brukner, please god save us from ourselves...

I fucking despair, all those years when we dreamed of spending £30-35m on Dabeed Beeya. And look at us now.

New owners, same idiotic decisions.

:butt
What a stupid post that is..

Have these new owners promised us anything other than moving the club forward?

Få nu "nej-hatten" af og se positivt på det! (Get the "no" hat off and take a positive look at it - in Danish)

I always read your posts with great interest and you usually have some very good points but all you say is no, no, no..... Why do you say no? Elaborate please.
It's a ridiculously knee-jerk response and an obscene and irresponsible amount of money to spend on a player, that I will refrain from describing here given he is about to become "one of ours". It is both desperate and shameful. The words of one George Gillett spring to mind when he talked about spending "like a drunken sailor". It truly sickens me to think how many quality players we could buy for that amount of money, I mentioned Turan, Kjaer amongst others. The Liverpool way my arse. I am as much upset at this as I am over Torres urinating on his legacy at Anfield. Buy in haste, repent at leisure, and boy are we going to repent.

First off, welcome to Liverpool, Andy.  Whether or not the fans agree with how much we paid for you, we'll be supporting you on matchday with an intensity you can't even begin to imagine.

About the transfer, all I can say is what a risk.  Massive, unbelievable risk.  If we had been in for him at the start of the transfer window we probably could have had him for 25m, but due to the Torres scandal we've had to overpay by about 10m.  If it works out, brilliant - we've basically traded Torres for Caroll plus 15m.  If it doesn't, well, it's going to be hard to sell him for more than 20m, even if he's still 25 or something when we put him on the market.

All in all, though, I don't think anyone can argue any more that our owners are not willing to put up the cash when a player is needed.  They negotiated as hard as possible on Suarez, because they could, but when they had to make a move to replace our #9, they did so.  Fair dues.  I must say I'm sceptical, but then, I thought when Rafa paid so much for Torres that it was a mistake, and was happily proven wrong.
