I really dont understand what most of you are talking about in this thread.

Is most of this basically about how to play copied games on the ps3 rather than buying them and how to use them online and so on and so on?

Today PS3 hacker Mathieulh reports finding a PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.56 exploit, although he states he has no plans to give any further details about it.

To quote from PSX-Scene: Well-known hacker Mathieu Hervais has reportedly found a bug that allows exploiting metldr, the bootloader and firmware version 3.56. Unfortunately, he refuses to release it.

Originally Posted by Mathieulh (via Twitter):

So much for "unhackable" PS3s though... I am not giving any further details about it. Sorry.

Yes, you put custom firmware on your ps3 instead of the official sony firmware and play downloaded games, homebrew etc on your ps3

Indeed, don't do it. Everytime you play a download game the custom firmware automatically sends £10 to Al Quaeda. DONT DO IT!

new 3.55 cfw which supposedly allows psn

Quote
We were waiting for new developments about online game on custom firmware (see kmeaw, geohot and others) when one of the brightest minds of our team has produced what we might call, the fastest possible access for the PSN.

The firmware is based on Kmeaw’s custom firmware, to which were added 2 small patches which allow access to the PSN!

Access is fast,no PC is needed to serve as a ” bridge “and then programs like ****Psn or charles, skipping the check of the model (debug, retail, reftool, etc.) and setting of the PS3 fw at 3:56 .. (not in the XMB)

Of course the risk of BAN is still high and being a CFW, ps3ita assumes no responsibility for any brick during installation.

http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/ps3ita-cfw-v3-55-released-allows-full-psn-access-82930/

not gonna test it myself as i have a legit console for online

A dumbed down explanation of the PS3 security is such that PS3 loads metldr at some point which than launches all the OS and game loaders, which the hackers were able to bypass. It was shown in fail0verfl0w presentations that metldr cannot be changed, so the PS3 would be vulnerable forever. It appears that Sony has found a way to bypass metldr, and if they properly signed their code this time, it should be secure once again.

For installing the .pup file does it have to be on a USB stick? I have it on a hard drive but my ps3 says no updates is recognised.

Edit: You do, it turns out.

I think I'm all set, but I have a large game back up (9 GB) that errors when I try and play it off my external HD - "An error occurred during the start operation (80010017)"

Googling shows this is an error due to blue ray.

Any tips, IE how do I copy it onto my PS3, or should I get a new version, does it also need to be on a USB rather than external HD? I'm on multiman, exit and when I go to the disc icon, I get the correct game background with the correct game name (Mortal Kombat), so I know it works in part.

You have a disc in the ps3 yes? Can be any game doesn't matter if so all i can think of is these steps i found on net and double check you done everything.

Firstly you need to format an external hard drive to fat32. I used
Next you need to put manager.pkg onto the hard drive also make a seperate folder named GAMEZ. must be spelt with a z.
Next you need to jailbreak your ps3.
I used a dongle using ps groove.
Firstly you need to check there is no game disk in the ps3 and remove all attached usb devices from the ps3.
Remove the power cable from the ps3.
Plug in the dongle.
Reconnect the power supply.
Switch on the ps3 using the power button on the ps3, then hit the eject button. Do not use the controller to switch the ps3 on for this operation.
If all goes well the ps3 will start as normal. If you get a message saying unknown usb device you will need to remove the power and start again.
Once the ps3 is power up you need to remove the dongle and then plug in the external hard drive.
Now go to the game section and at the bottom you should be able to install the backup manager.
Once done you can now backup your games to the hard drive by inserting a game disk and then opening up backup manager and using the install to hard drive option.
Also any games you may have on your pc can be transfered to the external hard drive by going into the GAMEZ folder and making a new folder in here for the game you want to transfer, then copy the PS3_GAME, PS3_BACKUP and PS3_DISC.SFB files to that folder.
You will need an original game disk in the drive to run games from your external hard drive. Any will do.
Hopefully if you have followed this everthing should be hunky dorey

it needs a patch to work, if you've downloaded the game it should be included with it, copy it to the root of a usb device then run install packages on the xmb and select the patch

there's also another fix that might be needed if you're using 3.41

Had the same error code. Fixed it by installing this pkg file http://www.filesonic.com/file/703712941/MK9-pkg-ps3.rar download it, copy it to external hard drive and install from there. MK works fine from external now

My PS3 is version 3.41. Looking to JB it as the Hard drive broken, can anyone point me in the right direction with regards to a site with step by step instructions on how to jb? Had a look on google but too many ways of jb'ing confused me.

Also is there a specific dongle i have to get due to the os software version of my ps3? (3.41)

Cheers!

The firmware hasn't been updated since this thread started, download and install Kmeaw's custom 3.55 firmware http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G1TIDQO1

Then install BDEmu (from a USB stick) from here: http://filebeam.com/6c49fe4254d937336c26605e2abd9b5c

Then install the latest MultiMAN (from a USB stick) from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X3D4V8RL (multiMAN ver 2.00.04 BASE (20110606_124500).pkg)

Sorted, I believe there's an FTP guide in the original guide to help you transfer games.

Have to say as almost all new games are unplayable on cracked consoles, this might soon become a bit useless for piracy.

You sure about that? I've not kept up to date with the scene but there's a modified crack for almost ever major release... not come across many games you can't play.
