Keisuke Honda: the new "Gerrard"
« on: January 25, 2011, 02:11:49 PM »

Keisuke Honda has to rank as the next best thing out of Asia. Outstanding attacking midfielder for Japan and a player we really should seriously be looking at.
The arrogance of a winner and a scorer of some of the best goals to be seen in the world.

The guy's vision, box to box style and energy to last 90 minutes..surely we must consider this guy.

This is what we do. And we do it very well. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bM8gOyjeuc

Think Rafa was linked with him, then again under Roy. Think he's one step further up in his fame than we would be looking at though (long term)

Remember when we were linked with him around 2 years ago in the January transfer window...he was still in the Eredivisie then and scoring goals.  Can play on the wings too, quality player

I'm hoping we make a move for him in the summer.
You have posted literally nothing of substance to flame about.  Your "points", and I dread to call them that, were superficial and completely arbitrary.  Nothing you said could be argued against because nothing you said elaborated a position of any kind.

Why is Gerrard in quotation marks?

Because he has similarities t0 Steven Gerrard with regard to the style of play. His influence on the pitch is second to none...especially as a dynamic player and leader...his range of passing, shooting, energy...haven't seen ANY asian player of his standard until now..

btw, he just created the equalizer for Japan v South Korea in the semi final's of the asian cup...Japan 1 S.Korea 1..2nd half..amazing run and speed from Honda and lay off...

Why is Gerrard in quotation marks?

Because the OP probably means Gerrard in the sense of "being an influential player like him" and not being the new Gerrard in the literal sense, ie: actually physically and mentally being Steven Gerrard.

I'd prefer us to sign wingers/wide players first, before we buy a central midfielder. But I've also heard he can play left back, is this true?

I'm glad this quote marks business has been sorted out, I was starting to worry! Whilst an impressive feat, Gerrard has no business dressing up ala Mrs Doubtfire, travelling across the world and pretending to be japanese. It would obviously affect his game and as captain of Liverpool it really wouldn't be appropriate.

He is a the fulcrum in any side he plays with...and def. the sort of player a top side would certainly consider signing...amazing vision.

Agreed. But I think any comparisan by way of "Player X is the new Player Y" is a bit shortsighted. I reckon anyone who has seen Honda play as much as they've seen Gerarrd play would point out some differences. From what I've seen of him he does alot of things that Gerarrd does and does them pretty well, but that's just because Gerarrd is one of the few midfielders who is capable of absolutely anything. He'd probably still be good enough to start in any position for LFC bar nets. And I think in Meireles we've already got someone who shares alot of characteristics wih Gerarrd: energetic, has played deep and high, cracking shot and capable of the odd exceptional long range pass (most of which you can see from the game against wolves) so I don't think signing a player like Honda would be a priority (yet). When Gerard does retire, definitely, but Honda isn't that young and by that time Gerarrd's gone his price would probably be inflated to the point that he isn't worth it.

Javier Pastore is better.

Best player out of Japan/South Korea was definately Nakata, he was a star.

Gerrard at 20 shits on Pastore, final third Pastore is amazing, Gerrard bossed the entire pitch.

Certainly the most gifted, although I always felt he played within himself a lot, never quite fulfilled his potential properly.

Yep, Honda strikes me as a similar talent level but with his head screwed on right and hence greater consitency. I like him, I think he'd be a quality signing, able to play most areas behind the front man or attacking midfield, depending on the system.

Love Honda, great player. But if were going all oriental, I think we should have a look at Takashi Usami. 18 years of age and the boy can play! Might be a much cheaper option. And looks much more like Gerrard to me than Honda, who I think is more of a forward.
