It's depressing to think just how far we have fallen in the space of just two years. How far are we from the title? Judging by the performances and mentality on display from our players, a bloody long way would be a reasonable answer.
There are players in our team and squad though, that I maintain are very good players. It can't be hidden though, the fact that these same players have not performed for this club for over 18 months now and that is simply not good enough. In many ways they have been fortunate in largely avoiding criticism because everyone at the club was focussed on Hicks and Gillett and then Hodgson and thus, diverting attention from some truly embarassing displays from what are international players. Now though, they do not have that distraction to protect them. If they don't start performing for Kenny then they will be done at the club no matter who they are, there's no two ways about that.
Why the performances of so many have dropped off so spectacularly is a puzzle to me to be quite honest, it really is. I know there are so many factors to consider, from the instability that Hicks and Gillett brought (of whom, for me, take 99% of the responsibility for our current situation) through to the appointment of Purslow and subsequently, the sacking of Rafa and arrival of Hodgson. Not to mention the loss of Xabi, Sami and Masch. None of these factors should excuse what we have seen week after week from certain members of our squad though. The same players that I have tried to defend on many ocassions.
Where do we go from here? I can foresee a massive squad rebuild getting underway in the summer unless the players really start showing the character and ability that has been missing for an unacceptable amount of time. That's something that I didn't believe would be needed but I'm starting to accept now, that it probably is.
