At the end of the day more positives than negatives. The mancs needed 2 big decision by a ref to beat a 10 man team from liverpool. End of.

So my thoughts on the game

First off I think Webb got both decisions right. Agger did catch him, even if he went down easy. Penalty all day.

Can't really argue the red card but the penalty was a joke.

Nice to see a bit of effort though, not bad for 10 vs 12.
I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.

I just wish he'd say one way or the other whether he's committed to the club or not. If he is then he should start showing it and if he's not then we should just cut our losses and let him go.
He did.
"...and RRRRRRRRIISEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!! RELEASE THE KRAKEN!"
Pepe just said, "Fuck you ball, you're not going in."

Gerrard took the ball, in my day that would have been a perfect tackle and I agree with you Paul it wasn't two footed.

First thing I learned in the early 70s when first playing football: Don't come down towards the ball in a 50-50 challenge for it is "dangerous play". Always attempt to toe-poke or side foot or "shoot" a 50-50 ball, don't effectively stomp on it.

The fact that he touched the ball is, no longer, enough to immunize one from punishment.

On the other hand, just a couple of second earlier Rafael had gone in, stomping and two-footed, to a 50-50 challenge with Meireles. Call that and the rest is history.
not really...next season he [Lucas Leiva] wont be here or he'll be here as bench warmer...mark my words

Loved it when Kenny took off Torres.

Purely because there will be no big personalitys running the show and he said himself 'no-ones bigger than the club'.

Torres effort was completely unacceptable and he looks as if he's asking for a transfer on the pitch. I so do not want to get on the lads back but theres no excuse for that today. especially at that shithole

If people think this was a great performance you are deluded.
I think that most people feel it was an encouraging improvement & a committed performance
The team showed prided but it wasnt a good performance, however playing 10 vs 12 it was never going to be a good performance.

Shit fucking game. We never got a chance to show anything had changed. 1-0 down and 1 man down for the majority of it. I thought we were showing good signs up until the Gerrard sending off but after that it really wasn't even a game. Kenny did well to bring Babel on and Torres had to come off... but 60 minutes of that game was just us trying to keep the score down, we didn't show anything incisive, creative etc...

Before everyone jumps on me for saying this... I am as optimistic as anyone about our future now that the King is back... I just think that we were never given a fair chance today and I can't bring myself to feel 'proud' over a 1-0 defeat.

Did you know that Football was designed to be a perfect human sport? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the rules. Some believed FIFA lacked the knowledge to describe our perfect sport. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define football through suffering and misery

Its shocking that UTD by n large for the last 20 years can dominate the league, but by n large were so rubbish in Europe..
Liverpool come along, not as good in the league or getting the nice treatment over the past 11 years, but can come close to dominating in Europe... says a lot really

I think it has something to do with Liverpool style being good for knockout matches and not so good against midtable sides instead of a ref conspiracy.

Right, so after a positive change in management, the one we have wanted for a while. After a positvie performance, given the circumstances, no talk about the owners holding up back, no Roy holding us back. VDM post about looking forward and being patient.....

One game in, and some people come in calling our players shithouses. I wonder what will please some people, there's just no sense of perspective any more. We've taken the first step on the long road to recovery, things can only go forward. But fuck it.....

Meireles is a shithouse, Torres is a lazy twat  ::)

I was thinking that myself. I was never a big aquillani fan. But I think with the ball played around the ground he would fit right into this team. Where would he play though???

Proud of the team.   Could of gone seriously south after a dodgy first minute penalty.  Loved the 2 subs at 60 minutes which were what was required.
No Gerrard for 3 games will hurt though

I love the fact that Kenny rolled the dice with youth and made decisions that were logical and smart. I love the fact he trusts potential and gives players a chance to prove themself. So happy he's back. Seriously, I love Kenny. Some major man love emanating from me hahaha ... shame about the result, but let's move on.

Not really - it's all about context really. Don't know where you've been for the last six months or whether you've actually been to a game but we have been fucking gash. We've been handing games to teams on a plate with a static formation and playing with a defeatist attitude from the first whistle whether it was Chelsea or Northampton Town. Until yesterday I was expecting today to be a capitulation by Roy. He'd show the mighty Alex Ferguson too much respect and a loss was nailed on.

Instead we played with passion and fight and matched them for a lot of the game - even with ten men.

Of course we exist to win trophies but that was a massive step forward. The league is so even this year that with performances like that I can see us moving up the table steadily and there's a chance of Kenny winning a European trophy - something that he's missing as a manager.

I have been to as many I could get to mate yeah.
I suppose your right in our current situation but i wouldn't say i was delighted or anything, I hate losing to them c*nts and being out of a trophy as they progress.

He did.

Basically said it wasnt a penalty and didnt thing Gerrard should have been sent off.

That was never a penalty if they give those kind of penalties we will have 4 or 5 in a game... its ridiculous HOWARD WEBB is a bloody muppet, regarding the sending off i agree it was a dangerous tackle by stevie but if u watch the game closely the same Tackle was made earlier by rafeal on Raul Mireles nothing was given..... its unbelievable everytime the scums play at Old Trafford they always get the benifits of the game... this year every game is a controversy something always happen and its always in favour of the scums.... Although i think we need more pacy players especially on the wings... todays effort was superb the support was fantastic..... i hope Kenny will give them a good lesson for wednesday we cannot afford to lose more games we need to get  a grip and start winning games will come thick and fast....

So my thoughts on the game

First off I think Webb got both decisions right. Agger did catch him, even if he went down easy. Penalty all day.

Second, Gerrard leaped, two-footed, off the ground and landed on the ball. Red card no question, I don't know how anyone could think otherwise.

As to the game, obviously it was over as a contest after 30 minutes. However, a lot of positives to be drawn. For 1 the team looked balanced and purposeful, pressed high up the pitch and were looking to get forward well. After the sending off that all went to shit of course, but defensively we were solid and the players looked a lot more comfortable in what was largely a Benitez style formation. The subs were mediocre, but I guess in this situation that's no surprise. Still, a marked sight better than anything Hodgson produced.

Howard Webb  MBE - Manchesters best employee

Just tweeted your explanation to Ryan Babel.  Hope you don't mind !
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Much better performance in general. Kenny is not going to perform miracles overnight but at least there was more effort than normal. We need to bring in some new options and need some players to up their game.

I loved the first two subs as it showed intent early. However shelvey looked very rusty (which is understandable). Couldnt really get going and ended up just chasing the ball. Plenty of commitment shown however.

Problem for kenny is now we have lost gerrard for 3 games at a point where the team could have built some momentum with a new manager in place. So its going to be difficult. Possibly joe cole (if and when fit) could play the 2nd striker/attacking midfield role behind torres.

alf a pound of braeburns!

It was always going to be a tough game. Moreso with a new manager, a soft penalty and 10 men before half-time.

Im saying  that you cant really judge. I want the team dominating possesion, creating chances and scoring them, thats a good performance for me.. However given the fact that we had a harsh sending off and we were already down thanks to a penalty that never happened with 60 minutes left , we cant really take anything from the performance at all. Sure there was some pride and all but I want to see the team winning games.

what passion, what effort, sure we lost but the man has only had 5 minutes to prepare for the game and yet he still got most of our players giving their all. Never a pen especially as the linesman didnt give it. As for Gerrard, 50/50 for me, he was stupid to go in two footed but most other refs would have yellow carded him and said just 1 more thing steve and you're off, but Webb at his home ground was always going to send him off.
There are plenty of positives and I can see us going on a bit of a run now. If we qualify for europe will people still say the squad he inherited from beinitez/hodgson is poor?

A positive that maybe hasnt been mentioned is that we saw a change early in the second half.
