Once rated upson - thinks he's been very poor over the last 18 months.
Cole and/or Upson would be awful business, however much we ended up paying. Does either player improve the team?
No. I'd take Ngog over Cole and Ayala, Skrtel, Agger, Carra, Kelly and Soto over Upson...

Young and Adebayor are alright, and I'd be happy if we signed either, but I think there are better targets out there available for less money.

What ever you say or think about Adebayor he will probably get us goals which we badly need.

I think Upson is THE most overrated defender in the world. Very average PL-player and he's getting old. I'd much rather stick with Agger and Wilson as left footed centre backs. I think Liverpool should get a good right sided centre back instead, if you understand what I mean. Gary Cahill etc. I think he's excellent.

I think Carlton Cole is underrated here, I mean he's a good targetman, which is something Liverpool don't have at the moment. OK, he's not exactly a world class player, but he's someone who could do what nobody else in the squad can't.

Marveaux - Gamble?

I'm not really a fan of Adebayor personally, but you can't really argue with his goals return. If we could get him on a good deal I wouldn't complain too much.

I'm a big fan of Ashley Young but I think he's becoming a bit stagnant at a very poor Villa side. If we could get him for £15m or less it would be a good deal.

Adebayor and Young would be pretty great signings given where we are at the moment.

Upson and Cole?? Err... Cole would be alright as a back up but West Ham would probably want at least 7 mil for him, and we don't really need another CB.

Upson? That means one of the centrabacks is leaving? We have 4 first team centrebacks with Wilson and Kelly who are young but can also play there. Also is Upson going (or willing even) to play backup to Agger, since both are leftfooted? Or is Agger leaving?

And Carlton Cole, my god how much is he going to cost? 10 million since he's English?

If that's problem when the owners have just brought the club then I worry. Cahill would be 10-15m.

Think the issue if we brought someone like Cahill would be Carra plus we do have the likes of Wilson on ranks.

I can't believe in the Upson/Cole rumours, because neither of them fit the supposed criteria NESV/FSG look for. In addition to that, they are very far from Comolli-typical signings.

OK, to see ANY positive: Cole scored a lovely goal against Fulham, all in one motion. 20 goals in the league in 57 games over the last two seasons (according to Wiki). That's not bad if you intend to use him as support for Torres, with Torres as the (obviously) main scorer.

But, fuck me, he just is maddening. Sometimes barely looks like he's trying, not playing in a 'lazy' way but just not doing anything at all. He misses easy chances and his career record for West Ham is 27 in 123 (again, Wiki-ing it here). Been well off form this season as well.

Add to that his potential price tag and, well, I just don't see it. Surely, SURELY we can find better strikers in the world than Carlton Cole.

There is no conceivable process that would result in anyone relevant at the club identifying carlton "one in six at west ham" cole as a viable target.

You don't go from Dzeko to this in one step, it's just not possible.

If you don't like it, pray its a smokescreen!

Partially, and also that the new owners have made the club fairly quiet on things like this so far.

For a start Upson is fucking thirty one years old. He's English, which means he's automatically overpriced and overrated. He's also gone right off and is regarded by West Ham fans as shite. He's regarded by me as shite for that horrorshow against Germany in South Africa.

At least Cole has age on his side, and you could say that he has at least some sell-on value, although to who exactly I don't know. Upson would be the most redundant transfer you could possibly think of, and I would be bitterly disappointed if Fenway provide funds for such a purchase.

Huth would be a good signing. Even for 10m. In home-games Roy could use him as a defender until we're 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go. He could then send him and Soto forward to bombard them with long balls. Away from home, he could play him as a striker and bombard him with long balls...

Either that's the plan or someone at the club has clearly lost the plot...

Adebayor would be our second best striker. He would add a physical presence up front and would also be a goalscoring threat. If Manchester City pay some of the ridiculous wages he is undoubtedly on, and he came determined to keep his head down and play to his ability, he would be a good signing. Couple of big ifs, mind.

Ashley Young has been a good player for Villa. He will be our best wide player should he come, and he has also been playing up front at Villa too, so he can do that if needed. He has stagnated a bit. In all likelihood that's down to things going flat at Villa, but there is a slight doubt there. The move woud hopefully spark him back to his best and give us some much needed pace on the flanks. We should not overpay for him. £10M plus Jovanovic, something like that.

Upson - no, no, no! We have some good up and coming defenders and he would only keep them out of the frame.

Cole - no thanks. WOuld be a physical presence, so on that limited basis I could just about see it, but really, we have to be aiming higher than this, especially since we have new owners.

Then you're not going from one to the other are you.

There's no prioritised list that has Edin Dzeko at the top and Cole directly below, was my point.

That aside, why pay millions for a fourth choice striker when Elmander could be had for chips.

Carlton Cole would not cost 8-10 million ... Something like 6-7 million is more likely, and he is worth that because he has value in certain type of games ... Ngog cost hardly anything because Rafa was a good judge of talent ... He is worth up to 5 million at the moment ... Both C.Cole an Ngog will be the backup strikers at LFC, once we get the proper partner for Torres in the 4-4-2 formation in the summer ...

Carlton Cole is fucking shyte and anyone who thinks he's good knows fuck all about football.

Everyone should just calm down a bit. Remember last summer when we were linked to quite a few shit full backs? We didn't end up with the likes of Luke Young, Figueroa and Salcido did we? We pulled a rabbit out of the hat and signed the fantastically awesome Paul Koncheskey! We are Liverpool and we do not sign ageing, overrated flops. Roys summer dealings categorically prove that  :(
