Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has warned that it will take some time for the club to reguarly compete in the Champions League again.

The Reds fell to seventh place in the Premier League and missed out on brushing shoulders with Europe's elite, and now the former Fulham boss believes that the absence could last longer than just one season.

"I would plead for patience really," Hodgson told reporters. "Of course we want Liverpool to be the Liverpool of old. We want to be up there every year competing in the Champions League.

"But we might have to accept that it will take us more than a few months. That would be a small price to pay if you get it right. You only have to look at teams who have tried to stay in the league or get into the top four."Clubs have virtually been destroyed by people making bad decisions. It's not because the owners haven't given money or supported the manager. It's just that they have brought in the wrong people."

Hodgson also retained a sense of cautiousness concerning the upcoming transfer window, and remained unwilling to put pressure on the club's owners to spend heavily.

"If the owners want to invest a lot of money, that's up to them," he said. "If we find the right players, I'm not going to be saying to them 'don't do it,'. I'm not that stupid. I want to work with the best players possible.

"But with the change that has gone on at the club and the new regime, it would be sensible for the new owners to be a bit more circumspect and get a closer look at everything.

"I don't think it would be a bad thing for us to keep testing out this squad of players.

"Before I start bringing players in, I've got to be aware that when I do, I will be pushing Shelvey or Kelly back. I've got to be convinced that the person coming in is the right one. That's the dilemma. When do we give the youngsters a chance?

"With that in mind, we have to be careful. My message to them would be - and it's no secret because I've had discussions with John [W Henry, the club's principal owner] about it - if the right players become available, and we really think they will push us on, we should go for them.

"We shouldn't hesitate if they feel they can do it. But I don't think we should be encouraging them to throw a lot of money at it straight away."

The ex-Fulham boss also admits that signing players to get rid of some others does not necessarily boil down to squad strengthening unless the incoming player performs well.

And he is willing to wait for his charges to display their strength as the season goes on, without making any rash moves on the market.

"Sometimes I'm frightened as a manager that I might get rid of a player who will be good for the club on the basis that there might be a name out there that looks a bit higher than the player you already have at the club," he said.

"When that player comes in and you work with them for two months, you realise that the name is great and it rings big bells but, in actual fact, he is no better than the player you let go. He [is] maybe even worse.

"I don't think this group of players will let the club down. I think they will play plenty of good matches between now and the end of the season.

"Whether we are going to start breaking into the top four or hitting the heights without some additions, I'm not prepared to say. I would like to keep my powder dry."

Great post BHB.  As for the three year thing, Hodgson HAS actually started on about that as well.  I read about him mentioning how Redknapp has had 3 years at Spurs and how he has turned the club around in that time so year, from 10 games to 50 games to 3 seasons.  It has already happened. 

“I think I would be a good comparison with Tottenham because Harry [Redknapp] came in there just as I came into Fulham so he will just be completing three years and he has brought in a lot of players. So to really call it my team, I would have had to make a slightly bigger impact on those who have been brought in.

I can honestly say now that if Hodgson is still manager of Liverpool FC come the new season (As is looking increasingly likely) then I'll be saving a lot of money. Be interesting to see how many people are going to the games after Christmas/New Year. I predict that we'll start getting the lowest attendances we've seen. Having spoken to Season Ticket mates that can't even be arsed going on their season tickets, I think it might start to get embarrasing. The last straw for some was I think when Hodgson was crowing about 'attracting 40,000' to the UEFA Cup game and then producing THAT. It was an insult to everyone. And he didn't even mention that 8,500 of those tickets were given away to kids - no doubt most of whom will probably plump for Everton now.

Really not sure what game NESV are playing, but unless they are careful, they are going to get a hell of a lot of returns on Season Tickets and despite those saying they would jump at one - £750-£800 is a lot of money to shell out - especially if you're paying to watch a Hodge-Podge of a side every week.

Getting beyond disgusted that this idiot is still at the club. What, realistically will it take to get rid of him? Can barely stand even seeing us play at the moment - the players must be sick to the back teeth of him and the fans pretty much have all had enough.

What are NESV playing at? It's a dangerous game and one they're going to lose unless they sort it out sooner rather than later.

yup - to be honest i really dont give that much of a shit about our results nowadays and at quite a few games this year i've thought of going with 20 mins left because i really cannot be arsed with the shite displayed, even when we've been winning games. utter shite from hodgson, and seeing as most weekend games havent sold out this season i can see that trend continuing the longer hodgson stays

Would strongly advise against that bud, worst mistake the Mancs ever made if you ask me. Them 3 or 4 thousand that they lost to FC needed to be in the ground making there feelings known. Would rather have a few thousand in the ground that are prepared to make there feelings known than have a bunch of photo snappers sitting back & watching us slip in to mediocraty.
